Hello Ladies-

I am the first to admit that I am not an alternative medicine type of person. I've gone the conventional route-lumpectomy, rads, and Tamoxifen. I've done pretty well, not a lot of side effects.

I am, however, having some muscle pain with Tamoxifen, which I have been taking Aleve for. I went to a craft bazaar yesterday, and was drawn to a booth where a gentleman was selling Oil of Oregano. Of course, he claims it's the cure for everything from althlete's foot to asthma.

He seemed to think that it would help with my muscle pains from Tamoxifen. He gave me a sample bottle to try, with instructions to take 2 drops daily, either sub-lingually or in a glass of water.

I'm wondering what you ladies think. Is this just the newest cure-all on the block, or have some of you tried it? I'd be interested to hear what you use it for.

Thanks,

Mary

I have been using oil of oregano for years but not in connections to bc. From what I understand it is an immune system booster, so I take it if I get that run-down feeling that is often the beginning of a cold. A few drops under the tongue, drink cold water as it's really bitter, and repeat a few times every day for a few days. No cold comes on.  I think overusing it probably is not a good idea but it's natural and works.

Hugs back, Granny. Mary, you are too funny. It's a good taste though!

How would oregano interact with ER/PR+? I don't know if my DCIS was + of -, have yet to find out, but I've been doing the oregano when needed for years now. Oh and you probably all know, but oil of oreganum is from a specific oregano plant, related to but not the one we use for spice.

Funny story: friend of mine in New York was coming down with a cold and I marched him to the health food store for a bottle of oil of oreganum. He became a huge fan, in fact too big, He began taking it a lot and called me one time barely able to talk as he figured if a few drops worked, then maybe ten or twenty would cure whatever ailed him that day.  His eyes were tearing and his mouth was watering like crazy! All I could think to tell him was drink as much water as he could until it stopped but his trying to talk while drooling excessively had me in stitches. Moderation is such a good thing!

I use oil of oregano on a rotating basis with other anti-fungals.  It's actually anti-microbial so it kills what ails you!  Google or youtube Dr. Cass Ingram...he's a huge OoO supporter.  I have used it sub-lingually as well and give it to my son for sore throats, etc.  I also used it on a root canal tooth that had become infected until I could get to a dentist to get it removed.  It worked wonders.  The abscess receded as long as I used it and it also acted as an analgesic (took away the pain).  You can also put a drop on your toothpaste and brush with it to keep away the "bugs"!

Hoist123 - I'd love to know more about what you've read. I've only looked at a few sources today but didn't see anything yet about Oil of Oreganum (or oregano) having estrogenic properties. That would make it a no no for my Onc. I did see that it's a progesterone antagonist though and I think that would mean it might be good for PR+ cancers. Can you direct me to what you've found? I'm eager to learn more!

Grannydukes, I have used O of o for a month at a time (mix with water and drink or put a few drops under my tongue) then i switch off to another anti-fungal. When I had an infected root canal tooth, I used it for about a week and a half (directly on he gum) until I could get the tooth out.  I also use a couple drops on my toothbrush when I brush my teeth everyday. It's good for killing the bacteria in your mouth that causes bad breath. I have never had any problems except when I put some drops in my mouth straight (without mixing with water).  I choked and got some in my windpipe! Ouch....potent stuff!

I had heard that Oil of Oregano increases estrogen so not good for breast cancer ladies that are estrogen positive. However, I have also found that it is anti-viral so can fight off a cold or put my herpes into remission. This an amazing thing for me. For years I have been plagued with herpes on my buttock. It will flare up if I am stressed or sometimes it seems for no reason at all. It is horribly itchy and very unpleasant. When I feel itching starting, I start taking the Oil of Oregano with juice, 5 drops in juice or water, twice a day. It sends the herpes into remission and the itching starts to abate.

I don't use it unless I need to as my breast cancer is estrogen positive. I would hate to give up my occasional use as it seems to work so well.

Aggie, I have never heard that about Oil Of Oregano!  I take it ocassionally as well...do you have a link?

I have found an authentic Paul Darco tea that works just as well as the oil of oregano.

I've never tried Oil of Oregano - I've heard it's more an anti-fungal/antibiotic than anything.

I don't take Tamoxifen any more, but I can tell you what helps me with muscle aches/stiffness. I take fish oil, curcumin, CoEnzymeQ10, and a high-dose Vitamin D supplement every day.

My mom had bad arthritis and her very conservative, non-alternative doc suggested curcumin. He said it worked better than Aleve or Advil. I take Jarrow brand, one capsule twice a day. My fish oil is Coromega orange flavor in the little packets - doesn't taste fishy or cause nasty fishy burps. You really do get what you pay for with supplements.
