Calling all Australian Sisters!

I'm in Canberra and have just done my second chemo treatment.  I'm have 3 cycles of FEC then will have 3 cycles of Taxotere and 12 months of Hercepten.

It might be nice to see how many of us are in Oz and if we aren't too far away from eachother try to organise a meeting.

Hello everyone

Well saw my gp yesterday and we are still trying to find a dr that can fit me in for a colonoscopy before Xmas!  I'll be ringing Cooma hospital this morning to see if they can do it.  Cooma is a small NSW country town only half an hour south of us, so it's a bit closer than the bigger Canberra hospitals.  I have private hospital cover so also trying the Canberra drs, but it seems everyone is full up before Xmas.

My gp says it could be polyps, hemarroids or just a small tear, but he also said (and I didn't tell him I'd been googling) that it could be mets from the ILC.  He also didn't know my brother had had bowel cancer 2 years ago - the same time I was going through chemo.  Ooops - I forgot to tell him, lol I had a few too many things on my mind at the time.  He said he would have ordered a colonoscopy as soon as I was over chemo anyway as a sibling with bowel cancer has to be screened.

So - just waiting until I can call the hospital in Cooma or call back one of the lovely ladies I spoke to in a Canberra practice yesterday to see where I'll go, and keeping my fingers crossed that it can be done before Xmas.  If (against all the odds) it turns out to be bowel cancer then it's very slow growing so a delay until after Xmas isn't so bad - except for my emotional well being. If it's mets then it would need to be seen to a bit quicker.  It's all very trying.

But I'm trying to focus on the good times we'll have this weekend and not let this get to me.  It will be what it is, and there's not a lot I can do to change anything at this point.  I'm actually feeling fairly good, which is a little surprising, not the emotional wreck I was on Thursday afternoon lol.

Trish

Vanstrada - After your surgery, you get a pathology report - this will detail the type of cancer you had and the size. They take some lymph nodes from under your arm, if any of these lymph nodes have cancer in them, then it's possible there are stray cancer cells in your body. Even if you have clean lymph nodes, you are still at risk of spread as cancer does not always spread via the lymph nodes. Positive lymph nodes indicate treatment with chemo to try and kill any stray cells.

The pathology report will detail the characteristics of the cancer - in my case I was triple positive HER2+ve ER+ve and PR+ve - that means my cancer was receptive to hormones both progesterone and oestrogen. The HER2 reading indicates if the cancer overexpresses the HER2 gene - this is the nasty bit and even node negative women are recommmended to have chemo and herceptin. The report also details the stage and grade of the cancer. Grade 3 is the worst - that means the cancer reproduces faster. Grade 1 means it is slow growing.

Stage 1 is the best - that is worked out by size and nodal involvement.

If you are hormone recpetive, then you will probably be required to take a drug to stop your body producing those hormones. I take an aromatose inhibitor - this is given if you are past menopause. I will take it every day for 5 years.

Having chemo can halve the chance of a distant recurrence. In my case I had a 23% chance of the cancer metastasizing elsewhere in the body -having chemo and the hormone drug halved that chance.

I hope I have explained this in a way you can understand - any questions please ask.

Sue

I will be thinking of you especially on Thursday - I think you need to just surround yourself with your support crew a.k.a loved ones.

We have our 'thank a volunteer' function tomorrow night and I just did all the shopping for it - I got everything and only 83cents over budget. I even managed to buy enought lollies and celophane wrap to make up 80 pretty lollie bags. Hopefully I havnt skimped on the dinks etc, my boss said there wasnt enough in the budget for pressies. Id better get cracking and start making them now. xxxxxx

Vanstrada - given your age - close to mine when diagnosed, you are unlikely triple negative (I didn't talk about that type before) - seems to be a characteristic of cancer in younger women. This type is not so good as there are no targeted treatments. My oncologist was glad I was triple positive, as there are treatments for the HER2 factor and the hormone recpetive factor.

Did you get your pathology report yet? If not, ask for a copy.
