Did anyone try this? Did it help? Are there different brands? I think at least CVS has one.. Any brand better than the other(s)? There is an area in my scar that is more red and elevated. I could try something to make it look less prominent. All the best, ĺucky

I love those silicone sheets. They have really helped my mast and node scars. I also bought those round areola sheets since my mast scar is around the areola. They are made of a thicker silicone. I have worn that sheet over my areola almost nonstop since last July. I can hardly see the scar anymore. And those sheets are so thick I keep it on through showers workouts and everything. Every few days I take it off and wash with soap. Once it dries it just sticks right back on. I am only on my second areola silicone sheet since July. They are expensive but last sooo long I think it is worth it.

I had to look. They are 3" circles from Scar FX. I bought them from makemeheal.com. I have not bought the regular sheets from Scar FX but they are probably out of the same material. I am really happy with it.

I just went to the website myself since I will need more after my exchange. The manufacturer says they are supposed to last three weeks worn 24 hours a day. You can keep on through shower and the like but they do recommend removing and washing every day. Well I only remove and wash once or twice a week (my bad - but it is a pain) so that is probably why mine have lasted so long.

Noellech, Can I ask how long you need to wear them for?  You said you had been wearing them since July and your scar was good. Is there time where the scar is "done" and you don't have to worry about the scar anymore.

noellech, thanks for posting about that website. I can't believe how many products they have there and some specifically made for breast and/or abdominal incisions. My PS recommended something called Cica Care Silicone Gel Sheeting, which is very expensive for just one sheet. I haven't bought it yet--I think it's only availble over the internet.

Yes, I don't know that much about it. I never even asked my PS, but I have been very happy. Actually now I see that they say the general Scar FX sheet should last three months. That is probably why I bought it in the first place, although the special shapes seem helpful too.

SamIam40, the website says wear 3 months for best results, as close to 24 hours a day as possible. They also say that some people report better results for even longer. I guess I have been wearing for about 6 months and the scars still seem to keep fading, albeit slowly and subtly. I do remember noticing the best improvement the first few months. I can see them but very thin, light and soft. They are not something someone else would notice unless they really looked. I guess because I am anticipating my exchange surgery and possible implant/lift on the other side I am still in the mode of keeping the sheets on. Otherwise I would probably quit now.

ASL - let us know if you find anything out about Cica Care. I haven't heard of that.

Try ScarAway silicone strips which helps reduce existing and prevent keloids and hypertrophic scars.  Ihave used them for several surgeries and find them superior in quality.  I am very pleased with my results. (I purchased mine online)  Good luck, hope you find a solution that works for you.

I wish i could tell everyone about ScarAway.  They are silicone sheets that work great and are reasonably priced.  I have found them at 29.99 for the treatment course supply.  They are soft and thin and do not pull on sensitive scar area when removed.    ( a REAL plus for me..any tape seem to pull too much coming off.) The surface is a soft smooth fabric (kind of feels like nylon)..protects me from the uncomfortable rubbing/friction of clothing.  An amazing scar treatment.  I wish I knew about it sooner.

The Scar Away Sounds similar to the CVS ones.  I have been using the CVS ones for almost 2 weeks now.  They are soft & fit to the curves of the scars pretty well...And I hate Tapes & Bandaids of anykind when they come off.  These did not pull or hurt when I took them off.

The 1st set I washed after 3 days...none of the Lint, etc came off them.  So I just left them on until they were not sticking well...Wore them through showers.

Anyway- The lasted 9 days!   If I had used some Paper tape I could have extended their time I think.  I used a Little Paper tape for Over laps & Ends as it was.

My Lumpectomy Scar already seemed to have areas of less Keloid after 9 days...Not alot...But some...Instead of one full line of Keloid...I had areas here & there in the scar that were a little smoother....Will let you know how they look in about a week : )

Hi Pam!

So glad to hear that maybe they are working for you!  If they are like my scars, they will keep getting better with use of the tape.  I had to put a bit of soap and kind of scrub the end where there was lint, but it did come off.

Don't know if this applies, but as to cleaning silicon pads in general, sticky tape does the trick (not water).  We use silicon pads for an entirely diffferent purpose and use sticky tape to clean.  We also wipe them with alcohol pads, but that may be for germ preventation.

Thanks for this thread! I really like hearing right from those of you that have used the products, especially sinc ethey are expensive, so I want to get the right thing!

Before I saw this thread, I ordered ScarAway from Amazon. I just put them on. I had a lift/reduction on my 'good' side, so I have alot of area to cover...all the way areound the areola and then the anchor shape going down and under...

since Noellech has had such good results with the Scar FX, I think I will bite the bullet and order the one that fits my scar shape, it's like $75! Cutting up another sheet makes for waste and it's hard to get things lined up so far in my first attempt.

Noellech, can I ask you and anyone else that have used these when you started? As in how long afer surgery? I have one spot that just now lost it's scab, so I haven't tried anything yet. I am 7 weeks out.

I also will try a sheet on my scar on the BC breast from my partial mast. It is a year old, but the website seems to say that even old scars can improve!

Keep posting with results, ladies. This is super helpful!

thanks,

Tay

Hi Tay!

I asked my PS about old scars and he said that he has seen improvement in them with the use of the silicone tape.  I started using it about 5 weeks maybe (?) after my exchange.  My PS just wanted to make sure that I was healed up before using it - don't want to pull on any tissue not healed yet.

Good luck with it!  Hope it works on the old scar.  Be patient!

I'll add an update about the CVS silicone strips. I'm amazed at the difference in performance between boxes. It was what my PS recommended (the generic of Neosporin's product), but this last box (and fortunately it's my last) just doesn't stick. I've just slapped paper tape over them and switch them out every 3-4 days. The scar seems to be healing OK, despite the tightness of my DIEP (it's the abdominal scar that was revised) and the fact that the scar pulls during Pilates.

I think that it's a good thing that you do. I did get a package that seemed to have patched together the silicone tape w/something that looked like plain old duct tape. My PS seemed OK w/the generic and it might work for most woman, but it look as if CVS's QA isn't the best. Still, it seems to have gotten me past the keloid phase, so I'm fairly satisfied.

I had an ugly keloid scar where my port was removed, and it also ached.  nothing worked on it until my dermatologist treated it with steroid injections, and then laser treatments.  finally it flattened out and faded and stopped hurting.  this is probably a last resort, but it does work.

abinneb- I looked at my CVS tape box & couldnt find an expiration date.

Hopefully Car just got 1 bad box.

My current tapes (round 2) are on one week today. At one week- the ends are still staying down on their own (no Paper tape to help)   Havent peaked underneith at all- although I am tempted.  LOL

I think this is just a bad box, but a heads up about CVS's QA. Another box had about 4 of the 28 sheets patched together w/what looked like duct tape. They seem to be working--my picky PS was happy w/the scar though he said if it's still red a year out he wants to laser it. So, they seem to be doing the job w/some add'l paper tape. They're convenient and relatively cheap.

So I am about 2.5 weeks on the Silicone Tapes.

Heres a DQ.  If the sheets are sticking good.  Should I just leave them on (not put on new ones)  How long does the Silicone or whatever work off the tape (if they stick for 3 weeks- are they still working?)  it had been 12 days-They werent dirty really.

Today I took them off-But they were still sticking good- except for a little on one end- I could have taped that down with paper tape.

Im glad I took a Picture before hand...As its hard to tell/remember if there is a difference.  My worst scar- the Lump- Id say 1/2 the length is almost smooth now...That was the better 1/2 of the scar.

Cant tell if there is a difference on my Mast. Scars.  They feel maybe smoother...They are more purple.  Dont think that is a bad thing- Not sure if its good either.

Hi Pam of the Miracle Strips. I'm not sure about your first question. The box says 3-4 days, at least 12 hours/day. I have no idea how quickly the silicone would wear down! I've been changing mine out (taped) every 4 days--but I do wear them almost 24/7 taking them off only for showering or intense cardio.

From what my PS told me, the strips should reduce any keloids/raised area/shininess. My abdominal scar is pretty purply/red (not worried aobut the ones north because of tattooing). He said that was a function of bloodflow in terms of healing and said that the strips wouldn't address that. Said to wear the strips for the rest of Feb. and we'd check a year postop to see how the abdominal scar is doing. If it's still purply/red, he said he could do some laser on it.

If you're just dealing w/mx scars, my bet is the color will fade much more rapidly than my abdominal scar. I'm still very tight, even after revision, and it's hard not to stretch the scar too much during Pilates.

Ok, my first report on the Scar Away sheets. I have been wearing them for 10 days. I expected the red to go away first, but that is not the case. The scars are still really red! I took pictures yesterday so I can compare, as it is hard to measure the differences.

My areola scars (I had a lift & reduction on the 'good' side) ARE flatter for sure now, 10 days after starting. However, the areas I am most concerned with, under the breast and the 'T' intersection, where I had trouble with it closing up, that area seems like it is more red and there are raised areas.

It's making me so nervous, I think I am going to go see my PS.

Not sure if I should go ahead and spend the big bucks on the Scar FX one that is the exact shape of my scar, or just keep cutting and pasting with what I have. Not sure if it makes a difference?

Guess what? I ordered and got the Scar FX piece from makemeheal.com and it didn't fit! I have a lift/reduction scar (think lolipop + anchor) and my aerola is too big! So frusterated, as I am sick of the patchwork method with smaller sheets and don't feel it will work as well.

So, I had to order the areloa piece separate...that cirlce is bigger. and then the anchor piece. The happy news is that customer service on the website is AMAZING. THe woman checked on everything and called me back in an hour. She put together a special order for me because I actually only need one of each, not a pair...which saved me money. So nice and understanding.

I seem to still have ends of stitches that want to come out through the inscion line...slowing the healing. Its been 9 weeks and my body has not fully dissolved the stitches! Weird.

I am taking picutres of the scars every couple of weeks, so I can see objectively what is happening...or not happening!

Will keep reporting back. This thread has good info, don't want it getting lost.

Twirlgirl- Wow, sorry they did not fit!  I wouldnt have even thought that may be a problem.

Glad the CS was nice & helpful.

So it has been one month for my Silicone Tape.  I do see a difference.  And dh says he does too.  My Lump scar -which is way worse then my M scars.  The better 1/2 is now a longer better 1/2.  And the top whish was very bad does not stick out quite as much.  Not a ton of improvement- but I do feel a difference.   The Mast Scars which werent real bad- but were starting to get Shiny & wider (leading to a Keloid)  I think it may have prevented them from getting worse...They are looking much better & feeling nice & flat again.

Im not quite the Miracle Strip Girl this week.  LOL.

They only lasted about 10 days this past week.  I think it makes a difference on how they are put on.  Last time I cut them a little too skinny... I also had to reposition them.  This time I cut them a little wider & Made sure they were placed right- so I didnt have to reposition them at all.

That's good news, Pam. I'm officially off mine now (per PS) and whereas my abdominal scar is still red, it's flat and not shiny. He said to wait to see, but might go after the redness w/laser (more his concern than mine). I have a few strips left and my poor nail tech had a cancerous mole removed from her face. Well, Ladies~

My results so far have been mixed. The stitches backing themselves out and making some small holes have really messed with using the strips. I would put them on and then a pus would develop underneath. Finally at 14 weeks, all the end of stitches got out!!

Then I went on vacation (Mexico, it was wonderful...lots of swimming) and didn't mess with the strips. I still have a gnarly place on the underside of the breast and the inscion has grown wide. I saw my PS for a followup at 4 months and he wasn't happy with the scars. So we may do scar revision.

I am back to using the Scar-away strip on just the bad place. The Scar-FX didn't do well for me and wouldn't stay in place well after a few weeks.

My PS did say the silicone gel that you apply has shown to work as well. So I may pick some of that up.

All my scars are still bright pink, not much fading at all...not normal says PS, so I hope we can improve.
