Dear Ladies
Please join me in this forum if you are having reconstruction in June.
We can hold hands together and give each other support. I know I need all the support I can get. I have had breast cancer 3 times. Once in 1999, twice in 2007. It is now time to put me back together again.
After much research and much thought I am going to NOLA for delayed Bi-lateral reconstruction on June 4th. Since I am a candidate for both the Diep and the Gap they will decide at my pre-op appointment which end they want to use.
I know I won't be a 10 like some of the ladies who had immediate reconstruction. I will have a few more scars on my beauties. But I really am looking forward to having a prostheses burning party.
I went out and bought all these neat PJ's and robes for the hospital. Will I be able to wear them or should I save them for the hotel?

Dear Ladies: I went to the ENT yesterday and I don't know if I have any more answers than when I went in. I found out one thing though, NEVER take an end of the day appointment. My appointment was at 3:30 and he came in at 4:45. His staff save one girl was all gone and he had one more patient after me. That meant of course that he rushed in and rushed out. I think he spent 15 min. with me tops. He froze my throat and stuck a tube with light down it. That was NOOOOOOO picnic. This is what he said, " he saw nothing that had to be corrected surgically. He saw no abrasions or cuts. He saw no plops" He wrote me a script to see a speech therapist. He never answered to the best of my knowledge the question - why does my throat hurt and why does it feel sore if there are no cuts or abrasions? So I am thinking of going to another ENT. As the stomach turns. Another day another episode. Sassie Dx 11/2007, IDC, <1cm, Stage I, Grade 1, 0/2 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Ladies, I need some advice. I was sailing along pain wise and now I have some pain from under my right arm pit to where my incision starts. It's like a "pulling" sensation and the scar seems to be "thicker" for about 2 inches in that area. Should I maybe be putting some warmth on the area and massaging? Other than that spot where the skin is thicker, my incision is healing really well so I'm worried something is going on under the skin. I had my exchange surgery on Jun 4. And I mentioned before on this site that I had a bad reaction to the anesthesia. Since this was first the time I ever had a problem, I was curious what the anesthesiologist did differently. I don't know why this time, but I had succunylcholine, which is a muscle relaxer that can cause numbness. I had the numbness for two days. I don't know what I could have done to prevent this, but I know to never have it again! Dear mbticswol I am sorry about the pain. It is hard to say why that happened because so much can depend on the PS and your body. I was very very skinny on the chest area one of the PS that saw me (before I decided on the Diep) said I was NOT a candidate for implants it would be too painful. They are stretching that muscle to create a pocket and sometimes that can be very painful. Perhaps they shouldn't have put as much saline. I am a novice in this area maybe some of the others can answer this question for you. My forum has slowed down with responses since it has been up for over two months. If you don't get a reply start a new thread and ask your question again. Best of luck. Dear KLE I would make sure you advise the anestheologist next time you have to have surgery of your previous reaction. They should be aware of it and they will usually side step that drug and use something else. Believe me I plan on making a VERY big deal about my vocal cords when I have my next surgery. Everyone reacts differently and unfortunately you have to go through it before you know you're the one who gets the negative reaction. Not a great answer but the only one I have for now. Maybe someone out there can advise more. Update on myself: Still having problems with vocal cords. Still have about a 1 1/2 " of abdominal incision that doesn't want to heal. I am 7 weeks out today and hoping that I just need 4 more weeks of rest. It has been a slower healing time than I expected. Patience is not one of my virtues but I am hanging in there. Very happy with my breasts which keeps my head on straight. I hope everyone else is healing nicely and doing well. Dear my560sel I am sure it is scar tissue that is doing the pulling. A lot of woman if they have a problem have it under the arm. I had seroma under my right arm with only one lymph node taken out. And when I had the mastectomy the only pain was under my right arm. There are a lot of nerves there and it is very sensitive. I would ask the PS when it would be OK to go for a massage to help break up the scar tissue that may be forming. I know at our hospital they have massage therapist that deal just with cancer patients and know how to deal with scar tissue. But I am not sure how long out you have to be? When I went in for the Diep I told Dr. D. that I was having constant pain like a bruise under my right arm which kept me from wearing a regular bra. Anything pressing there aggravated the area. I told him that it happened after my mastectomy. He circled the area went in and the only think he found was a nerve - so he removed it while doing the DIEP. No more pain. I know how you feel though. Anything out of the ordinary you worry. But call your PS and ask about the pulling and the massage. Hugs Sassie Dx 11/2007, IDC, <1cm, Stage I, Grade 1, 0/2 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Thanks Sassie....The pain seems to come and go and when I have it I gently massage the area for a few minutes and it seems to calm the nerve down. I think I can feel the expander under there so maybe it's pressing on the nerve when I make a certain movement?? I'm going to my PS on Tuesday so I'll make sure to ask him what it could be and if I'm doing the right thing by gently massaging. Maybe like your PS, he could remove the nerve when I get my exchange... Thanks for getting back to me, I appreciate it! Dear mbticwol From what I understand talking to others who have implants that the amount and time of fills can vary greatly. You also are in charge. If you are exhausted and not feeling up to it there is no reason why you can't wait awhile before the next fill. I have heard that some doctors are very aggressive with the fills, some take a very slow progression and some let you determine what is comfortable for you. I believe that we all know what is best for our bodies. Take an extra couples of weeks before the next your fill. Tell the doctor you need more time between fills. He should understand and the final outcome will be the same whether you do it fast or slow. The difference is your comfort. Dear Carole01 I can't imagine going through free tram flap and tummy tuck and then doing Chemo in 4 weeks. I am 7 weeks out from the Diep. I am still very sore and still have an inch opening in my incision. I am sleeping about 9 hours a night with my body trying to get back to base 1. You have gone through a major surgery and there will be swelling in the area. My stomach is still swollen. Of course there is swollen and there is swollen due to build up of fluid or hernia. Even though you had the free tram flap that means that they still took part of your stomach muscle for blood flow. That is going to take time to heal and then of course with the Chemo it depresses your immune system and makes your healing much harder. Go back and see your PS and make sure the swelling is just part of the expected healing process and nothing else. Only he can determine that. I have heard of several women that have ended up with hernias and then had to have a mesh put in to strengthen the abdomen area. Hope I have helped? Best of Luck to all in the healing process. Sassie, Saw PS today, everything is normal. He said I would get swelling as the day progressed until the muscle got its tone back. I had a belly button hernia but they fixed it when they did the surgery. Physically he said everthing was on track. Boobs look good, incisions are healed up. He said the only good thing about starting chemo so soon was that it would get over sooner. Hopefully things will get better. Dx 5/20/2009, IDC, 3cm, Stage II, 3/10 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

I gargled with the mouth rinse 3-4 times a day for about a week after and only had one tiny taste bud get swollen on the tip of my tongue. Hi Everyone: I am home and on the mend. My incision is closed but he sent me home with a drainage tube. I really don't know why since so little is coming out. I guess he didn't want to take any chances that the incision would open again? I am calling the center on Monday and telling them that the tube is dry. They sent me home with scissors and told me how to take it out when I get the OK from them. Not really excited about doing it myself but I guess I can give it a try. Had a really exciting time flying with a connecting flight. Didn't know that there was an hour difference time change from NOLA to Charolette. So I am taking my time stopping and getting food etc. They were closing the plane door when I ran on. They weren't too happy but I didn't realize I had to change my watch when I was connecting to Detroit. I would have had to spend the night in Charolette there was no more flights going out. Oh, well never a dull moment. Now I am getting ready to set my date for stage 2. I need a break so I am not going to back until the end of November or December. Technically, October I would be 4 months out and could go back then. But since I had to have my incision worked on again I think giving my body a rest would be a good thing.
