Hi Nordy - was great to talk to you yesterday too!  Hard to believe it's been 4 weeks since we had surgery.  My drains are still pumping out around 80 - 90 cc's a day.  So sick of this.  I think I'll start walking a LOT more to try and get this output down so that I can get the drains out by next Friday when I have my Dr appt!  Checked with Ashley this morning on whether they could do the ooph in NOLA when I'm there in December and she said they still don't have a GYN down there that could come in and do that......so, I guess we'll wait and see if anything turns up between now and then!  Would sure love to get that done at the same time so only one surgery - if I decide to go that route.  I'm having worse cramps today than I ever had with my period before.  I am so lucky!

These darn drains!! Does anyone have itching around where the drains enter?  I am trying not to panic and pull them out. I just keep reminding myself they are there for a reason. Yes this is better than a seroma- FOR SURE!

Nola Ladies, what does stage 2 consist of? Symmetry issues?

Also ladies like Anniese and Nordy- how do your breasts feel? Do you feel any hard spots? mine feel strange when I wake up- like heavy and still not a full part of me. I find that I do not easily stand up straight- not sure if it is leg flaps or breasts wanting me to lean over.

What does the NOLA dcotors say about future bras? underwires? when can I wear a "normal "bra?

Thank you all for ALL your help and support ! I am so glad I am not alone and BCO friends!

Spring - no one is as suprised as me at this development.  I thought for sure - based on how I felt and the menopause sypmtoms I had - that I was done with this for good.  What a shocker this was.  A while back I read about this happening to someone else on this board but never gave it much thought.

Happy - Stage 2, symetry issues, fixing dog ears and making incisions look better, some lipo to get fat to fill in areas that are flat, etc.  Yes, I have the same feeling in the mornings - for about 30 minutes after I wake up I still have a hard time getting moving.  Things are heavy and uncomfortable and feel kind of like weights on my chest.  Once I'm up and moving it gets better.  I do have some hard areas on both breasts - one irradiated and one not.  This too is supposed to get better and then be fixed in Stage 2 if still there (I think).  I was told to wear no underwires until after six weeks and then after that I could wear whatever bra I want.

Happy - DO NOT pull your drains!!! You can do this! In the whole scheme of things, this is just a short period of time, and before you know it they will be telling you that it is time for them to come out! Hang in there! As for the heavy sensation in the morning - oh yes! When I first sit up it fill like the "twins" are filling up! Kind of similar to that heavy feeling when you are in dire need of breast feeding! But it does go away after about 15-20 minutes. My breasts also have a couple of hard lumpy spots in them, also one radiated and one not, just like anniese. I get a little concerned only because one of the hard spots is almost in exactly the same area where my breast cancer was. I just keep telling myself that it was not there before surgery, but has been since, so hopefully it will either resolve on its own or they will take care of it at stage 2.

Anniese - I am so sorry to hear that they still do not have a gyn surgeon on board. That will mean for me, having my hyst in between stages and delaying stage 2 for as long as they feel is necessary. I will have to dble check w/my gyn surgeon as to time in between surgeries. Dr. S said I would only need 8 weeks after stage 1 prior to hyst, so that would put me the end of Oct. Then if I have Davinci hyst - I wonder how long between? It would be great to get it all over with this year. As much as I am devastated at the thought of not being able to have another child... I am going to find out exactly what my risk for ovca is at my next onc appt. Ahhhhhh... the long lasting effects of BC.

Hi all. I will be 1 week out of bi-lat Mx with LD flap reconstruction tomorrow. I had my appt. with PS and he removed 3 of the 6 drains today. I was so happy, but this is what I told him: I carry them around in a fanny pack and feel like a mother hen hatching eggs. I lost 3 of my chicks today! They are a pain, but you have to laugh about it.

I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one dealing with gyn issues along with BC. If you already had the "tummy tuck", aren't you afraid the hyst. will ruin that? I wanted to do the DIEP & hyst. at the same time, but when I found out I was not a candidate for DIEP I didn't pursue it. After this surgery, I'm not real anxious to go under real soon, but like you, I want it all done & over with!

hi to all of you wonderful ladies.

I had a mastectomy with tissue expanders on right side with a lift on left side on Sept 2nd.  It's nice to read all the posts and see all the support.  For me it really makes a big difference being able to relate with others who understand 100% everything we go through.  My PS filled me some during my surgery and I went back on the 15th for a fill-up.  He said he gave me a double-shot.  I know he told me the amount of cc's, but my brain was sleeping at the time. I go back next tuesday for another fill-up and my PS thinks that will be enough.  I'm up at 2am because I am in pain and can't sleep.  Had to take a pain pill for the first time in over a week.  The skin on the bottom side of my foob is red.  I'm hoping it is just the skin stretching and nothing more.  Am I correct in thinking that infection would be red around the scar?  I think my pain pill must be kicking in--starting to feel a little loopy!  Does anyone know how long before I can have the exchange surgery.  I'm hoping I can be done by the end of the year and start the new year off as a new beginning.

Gayle

LeeMcC - It is all you this week!

Pam - I am sorry to hear about all the pain you are having. I did have expanders in the first time I attempted reconstruction, and I can tell you that they do get rather uncomfortable after the fills. If you have a lot of redness at your incision site, I would be sure to get in touch w/your MD. Usually an infection is accompanied by increased temperature at the site, not just the redness - so see if you have any of that. I don't recall my skin turning red during the expansion phase, but I did have some trouble w/one of my incisions not healing well... but I think that was because I was carrying my baby around on that side too! I hope this weekend finds you feeling better. I do know of people who get a muscle relaxant to help with the expansion phase. Maybe ask your doctor if this is something that would be appropriate for you? Good luck!

I got the go ahead from Celeste at the Center (back in 2007) to use Neosporin w a numbing agent (Lidocaine I think) at the exit points for the drains...it REALLY helped me tough it out! PLEASE check w YOUR Doc s office to be sure its OK!

Marcia,

That BarelyThere bra is exactly the type I have !!! I tried one on yesterday, my loosest one, and I just could not take it. so last night and today I am bra-less. I am past the 2 week mark and just walking on egg shells! I think the hypersensitivity of the skin under and between breasts must be some nerve thing perhaps re--generating. It will pass. FUNNY we discovered that same bras though! I too love the colors and the skinny straps! There were all I needed when I had the implants...

OK GROSS story about my drains.  Last night when I got out of bed in middle of night to pee, I forgot to gather up my drain pouch (I am using the ON-Q pain ball black pouch thing). I got out of bed and the bulbs stayed in bed and I was standing there with dripping hoses!!! I screamed and woke up DH who threw on the light, and I was saying, "Ive ripped the hoses off!". So anyway, they just pop back on , but (gross) there was "spray" all over my side of the bed. Totally disgusting!  4 more days to go with these suckers....

Spring.

Marcia! I think I am going to ask about the Neosporin on Monday or Tues. I keep thinking these drains are going to come out and every time they tell me "no", my output immediately increases! They must know my body better than I! Anyway, today the right drain, which is the one that has been giving me trouble all along started itching and feeling really uncomfortable at the exit site. I was thinking about the Neosporin before I even read your post, but did not think to use the one with the lidocaine in it. I will hold off until I get the okay, though! I am so eager to lose these drains... BTW, Happy New Year!

ANYONE with tips on how to quickly lose the drains, please let me know!!! Increase or decrease activity? Is there a secret? Anne W - yours were out at 3 weeks - is there a difference in length of time between SGap and Hip flap drains? Yes, they are there for a reason, yes, I will do as the doctor says... No, I don't like it. Undecided

Spring - Marcia also gave me the tip on the Barely There bras. I went to Kohl's twice last week to find a bra that I liked and thought would not be too constricting. I liked the Barely There ones, but just couldn't seem to get a good fit. I ended up with two of the Warner's wireless bras. One is a little on the sexier side and the other is a really soft stretchy cup, that I just love. It is so comfy. I am going to go back in a week or two and try the Barely There ones again. I think right now, that the area is still maybe a little swollen and sensitive, so will look when things are even more healed.

I had one butt drain out at 2 weeks, the other at 4 weeks. Both probably should have stayed in a little longer, in retrospeect. I did get a bit of seroma on each side, but it quickly went away.

The key for less output is less activity!! And compress the heck out of it with compression panties. I wore two pairs (simultanelous!) of the Barely There tummy control brifes--lots of spandex, like a swimsuit bottom. So, go for more compression and less moving around. It's maddening when you're a month out, but it helps.

I don't know why the hip drains put out more than the backside ones--motion maybe?

Thank you Anne! I think my output went up the past few days because I was so sick of sitting around the house and it has been such beautiful weather that I went out for a long walk the past few days! Maybe I need to slow that down, but it is hard for me! As for the compression, Dr. Sullivan has me in a crotchless girdle to be worn at all times except when showering, so I am already compressed! The thing goes from up under my breasts to just above the knee - I can't imagine putting anything else over it! (but maybe if it helps I could stand it a day or two!!!) Thank you for your insight!

They kind of stare at me like big eyes! My BS says they are beautiful and asked if I have shown my girlfriends yet! I will wait until I have a finished product. I was filled 540 ccs at surgery, so my PS says he may not have to do any more fills before exchange. I would be very happy with that!

Hi Everyone - haven't posted anything in a while but I had my 6 weeks checkup yesterday - unilateral DIEP - everything looks great - incisions have healed up very nicely.   Tummy is flat - still really sore and hard as a rock but that just takes a long time to heal.  There is one area above the flap that is "caved in" - the PS said it is because of all the radiation I had.   Normally he would inject fat to fill this out but says that it is so deep and large an area that just doing that would not work.   When he told me what he was going to do to "fix" it I thought WHAT?????   He's going to reopen the top part of the flap and then layer or fill in over the "hole" with cadaver skin - then lay my skin back on top and stitch it back up - no new incisions - just using the old one again.   Has anyone heard of this?   Understand this area is above the flap - not IN the flap.   I will also have the nipple done and a lift on the left side at the same time.   Outpatient surgery - said it would take about 1 1/2 hours to do everything.   Sure beats the 5 hours it took to do one breast during DIEP - huh?   For those that have had this - what is the recoup time for a lift?   Do I wear a bra?  No bra?  etc.   Just curious - this will probably happen the first week in November and was wondering how things would be for Thanksgiving - we're going out of town and hoped I could wear a real bra.   By the way - I tried on bathing suits the other day and I was soooooo excited!!   Two boobs and a flat tummy!!   Now if I could just do something about the flabby butt!!   ha ha ha   PS said I can resume all activities now so Pilates - here I come.

Tchmuzik, wow, I never heard of that. I did have AlloDerm (or cadaver skin) before when I had one step recon with implants and the alloderm. (I later had a stacked DIEP/lumbar due to rads failure).

One note of caution. Some insurance companies BALK at paying for the alloderm, which is really expensive. (It is also very thin, so he may have to use a lot). You may want to ask him about it and make sure your ins. company will cover??? just a thought.
