Need help on latimuss dorsi muscle breast cancer reconstruction (using back muscle)

Does anyone have any first hand information on this procedure?

My surgeon is recommending this for me as I am not a suitable candidate for the TRAM flap.

Michelle- Thanks for the update. I am now 7 weeks post-op and feeling alot like you did at that time. I am having problems with fluid build up in my back. PS drained it twice and said if it doesn't clear up, he will fix it at exchange surgery. Meanwhile, I feel like it is limiting me to what I can do. It gets very uncomfortable! I also still have numbness under my arm where nodes were removed. Does the bio-oil work? My PS has not told me to put anything on my scars but I am willing to try anything! I am having a hysterectomy on 11/16 and was hoping I could have exchange at same time, but PS doesn't want to do it! That means another surgery in Dec.!

I know what you mean about about the curiosity from others! The whole procedure is so amazing and most people just don't know. Explaining can get tedious. I am about the same size I was (and always had people staring at my chest) and I think many people are trying to figure out what they are! I find it gets easy after the first debut!

Hope everybody is healing well!

Hi Gals,

My mastectomy with bilateral LD flap is next Monday...any last minute advice?

Also...any suggestions on how to wash your hair during this? It sounds like you can't move well because of all the incisions and you can't get your drains wet...so what's the solution?

I am lucky enough to have a hair salon behind my house!!!!  My home salon.  On Thursday after my Monday surgery, a couple of my friends came over and we went to my salon and they shampooed and dried my hair.  I laughed so much....They were saying that they were going to open up a salon and call it Dumb and Dumber Salon....laughter is the best medicine...

I will be praying for the doctor and nurses who will be with you on Monday and also that you will be free from infection and minimal pain...and of course a speedy recovery.

It wasn't until after my surgery that I found BC.org.  You and others are so blessed to have the support of all these ladies before and after your surgeries.  I know you will do just fine.

take care and get some rest this week....I know that is hard to do

Michelle-sounds like you're doing great.  I also get sore when I overuse my arms, I try to take ibuprofen if I know I'm going to do something strenuous. I find the numbness is not going away but is less noticeable sometimes-don't know whats up with that.  I know what you mean about the stares-but it's normal, find myself doing it too!!!!!!  I haven't had my exchange surgery yet so am lopsised as I have a D/DD and a C.  I wear crazy prints as often as possible.  My MIL has been wanting to feel mine since I got home from the hospital and finally couldn't take it anymore-surprised me with a sneaky feel up!  She says it's the hardest little boob she ever felt-good thing I love her!!!! Hope things keep going well for you.

Hi Ladies,

Discharged from the hospital yesterday and had my first good nights sleep last night. My roommate was in terrible pain so needless to say not much sleep in the hospital. My surgery was Oct 28th it was scheduled for 4 hours but ended up being 6hours because of the scar tissue from my failed implant. The other suprise was that the Plastic Surgeon put in an expander after we had gone over the detailsĀ  in his office and I was told that the implant would be put in straight away so I would not have to go through more surgery. My scar on my back is bigger than I thought it was going to be. The scarring issue I have because I form keloids will just have to delt with as it comes up....can't worry about everything right? I feel good except really tired.....everything is very tight and I am on pain killers every 4 hours. The health care nurse came this morning and I have an appointment with the PS on Thursday.

Thinking of you all,

Hi Nosurrender,

How have you been doing? I have been hiding in a shell the last few weeks since I learned I need another mastectomy in just a year. It's a different cancer. New PS this time as the other one really botched my exchange and ruined my remaining breast.

So.....I'm having mastectomy of the rt breast with LD flaps and expanders. This PS believes this way I will get the best results.  I've been reading a lot on this site, cause this procedure is really freaking me out. I can't imagine how you can sit up, or even move for that matter, with all your muscle groups compromised by surgery.

I just sent a PM to Grimace cause she mentioned that she had this procedure done WITHOUT back incisions...I want to know about THAT magic trick.

Candi--I had the no-back-scar bi lateral MX with lat flap recon also. I'll tell you what I can. My PS is in Reno Nv. and I think he's one of the few surgeons who does this particular procedure. At least so I gather because the other sisters on these boards never mention it. I do know that girlmace had the same procedure and I think we may have the same PS because she lives in the Reno area.

Anyway, he went through my MX incisions on both sides. I believe he uses a scope, but he won't tell me. He's rather different, I think, but a genius. I still feel the inside trauma that every one else feels, the strange sensations of the muscle doing weird things, just no external scars on my back. Also, I only wanted to go for a B cup so he didn't need to transplant any skin along with muscle. I am all through with my fills as of today and I stretched out okay; I even have old radiated skin to contend with.

Take care and good luck with your surgery.

Hi Linda, Thanks so much for all your help. Your pics on Fumi's forum really helped me!

Naninka, I hope you feel better every day! It is amazing what can happen once they open us up. I know I have a lot of scar tissue from my current contracture.

Hi Candi, i know what you mean about the shell! I have had this surgery planned for a long time. At first, I was going to do a different surgery and then last month we changed our minds. I am glad we did. I researched and also spoke to other docs and we have other muscles that take over where our Lats are missing. I will be right behind you! We will do GREAT!

Bobbi, thanks for explaining that procedure.

I go in on Tuesday to be marked and then the surg is Wednesay. Apparently I will look like a coloring book before the surgery!

Hugs to all,
