I didn't see a thread for reconstruction in November, so I'm starting one!
I'm so excited! I got my tentative date today--November 16th. If the final $$ works out with my insurer, I will be on my way to new breasts.
I'm having a delayed bilat DIEP. My original surgery was in July 2008, and I've been exploring recon methods since then. I had both neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemo, followed by rads, so my active treatment took precedent over aesthetics. Now that I've been NED for over a year, I'm moving forward with the recon of my choice.
I have the paperwork for my preop tests, but still no estimate from the PS's office. We've been playing phone tag. But you know, they say there is a silver lining in every cloud. Four days after I had my consult with the PS, my dear father died. That's the cloud part. The silver lining is that my share of his estate will more than cover any expenses that my insurance won't. So, it's almost a moot point getting the price from them, but I still want to know.
Anyone else have a November recon planned?

I'm dealing with my insurance company and reconstruction costs now. I am trying to find out what they will pay, but even with the procedure code, they are giving me double-talk ("can't apply the modifier"). Shoot, they can't even tell me if the figure they gave me is for a single or double DIEP. Anyone else dealing with this kind of problem? What do I do? Call back and hope I get a different operator? Good for you for doing research to find the in-network surgeon. On the plus side waiting until the beginning of your deductible year may be a good thing. That way you can have all stages of your surgery within that year and only worry about the in network deductible and out of pocket one time. |

I'm set for a left mastectomy/SNB with immediate DIEP on November 19 for residual DCIS after 2 lumpectomies with dirty margins. I've never had a major surgery and have always been self-sufficient and the one who did things for everybody else, so I'm dreading being dependent. (I'm left handed, so expect to have some limitations for a while.) The good news is that I will have no bad hair days during recovery. My husband knows that looking good makes me feel better when I'm ill, so he took it upon himself to learn how to dry and style my hair with a curling iron. I think that is very impressive for a masculine, professional guy who has ridden motorcycles for 35 years and knows absolutely nothing about hair! He promises to take good care of me, so his only real concern is how soon will I be able to ride with him again. I was back on our 'Wing 3 weeks post lumpectomy, but this time I think I'll leave it up to my belly and suspect that it will say no for several months! |

Well, after much soul-searching, I've decided to put my recon off until my father's estate is settled. Things are just too uncertain, both with my insurance company and how much I will have to pay myself, and how much I will have in the end from my inheritence. I also don't want to go into major surgery with an already depressed emotional state. I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

TOB - how lucky to have such a great husband. I definitely couldn't see my husband trying to do that. I am lucky that my daughter is a hairdresser and she helped with that. I, too, am like you in being self-sufficient. It was very hard for me to sit and have people wait on me (only for a few days) - but just sit back and let them. You deserve to be waited on! Hi NancyD. We were almost together again! Best to do it when it feels right. I just scheduled surgery for November 23 to fix the lumpectomy defect in my left breast. The PS wants to lift both at the same time for symmetry. He said I probably woundn't be happy with just fixing the bad left breast as they wouldn't match. So I'm excited to get going on this. My left cancer breast also ended up bigger after radiation, the tissue expanded and firmed up so he'll reduce that to match the other one. nancy258 I just read your statement about your radiated breast got bigger. I have never heard of that happening. Mine got smaller...I had to buy a silicone insert to wear on that side to fill out my B cup bras. It had to be from the rads because the lumpectomy did not leave me disfigured. I also had DCIS my 2nd DX. Ended up doing a bi-lat MX with LD flap recon. Sounds like your doc has a good plan for you. Take care Don't deny the diagnosis, but defy the verdict.........
