Hi everyone
My PS likes to do nipple and areola reconstruction from skin grafts taken from the inner thigh (crease). I think his work looks great but am worried about poosible scarring on thighs. My PS says because it is on the crease, it will not show and that it heals well. I have yet to find someone on this forum who has had a skin graft taken from the inner thigh (although I've spoken to others who have had grafts taken from other areas). If you are out there, can you tell me how the healing to the thigh area went? Thank so much. This forum is wonderful.

I had tug (inner thigh) flap in late August. The Doctor used my inner thigh tossue/skin to make my nipple that could not be spared but aereola was spared. Never would know the nipple was not real. My thigh incisions are still healing and NOT in my crease. I wish they could have been in my crease but not possible since he needed my thigh tissue. To me that sounds like an ideal place for a skin graft. (very soft skin and yet firm and I think teh color may be just right) Good luck Diagnosis: 6/9/2009, DCIS, 1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/0 nodes |

Thank you so much for your reply. That's how my PS feels...that it's the ideal place with regard to color and consistency. I'm sorry that I'm asking such specific questions, but with regard to the thigh, do you think this will heal well enough to let's say, wear a bathing suit? I'm not comfortable making another scar. Thanks again for responding to my post. Diagnosis: 8/12/2009, DCIS, 6cm+, Stage 0, Grade 3, 0/7 nodes, ER-/PR- |

The only negative thing I have heard about the groin grafting is that you are more at risk for infection since that is a moist area. Don't deny the diagnosis, but defy the verdict.........

My incision scars are not in my crease so therefore are more obvious.I was told that the first six months to a year after the incisions are when it looks the worst. Then down the road it should look like a white stratch mark- able to see it if you look but will not catch your eye. I think it really depends on how your skin scars. At this point (10 weeks out) I would not wear a bathing suit unless it were shorts or swim skirt but I am hopeful down the road I can wear one. However. I think in the crease would be far less obvious. How large of a scar would you have? WHere other area are you considering grafting? I did not get an infection but I did get a seroma two weeks post op. Diagnosis: 6/9/2009, DCIS, 1cm, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/0 nodes |

Thanks again everyone for getting back to me. I don't know how large a scar I would have, I guess I need to ask my PS this. As far as I know, the only area he uses for grafts is the crease of the thigh. I am asking all this becasue I wonder if I should opt for the tattoo instead, although my PS is very opposed to them on asthetic grounds. However, photos of women that I've seen on the picture forum look fine to me. Diagnosis: 8/12/2009, DCIS, 6cm+, Stage 0, Grade 3, 0/7 nodes, ER-/PR- |

I was trying to decide that same thing back before my nipple recon in June. I work with two different women whose mothers had BC. Had bil mast and recon. I asked them the question seperately and was given the same answer. Both of the moms said they would never choose to do the thigh skin graft if they had it to do over. "It wasnt worth the pain or problems". My PS said it was not to "easy" to have sex for quite some time after either. That helped me decide to do the nipple recon and tattoo after. I dont regret it a bit. The tattoo does not hurt. Feels a bit weird when they go over the scar from the nipple recon. But no pain!!! notfakejustnew

With my first reconstruction many years ago (expanders/implants), my PS used the inner thigh crease to create the nipple/areola. I found it to be very painful and very hard to heal. Months after these areas seemingly "healed," they would become raw and sore. I would never choose to go that route again. The skin color of the grafts from the inner thigh crease is darker, but mine eventually faded and I had to have them tattooed anyway. |

Wow I feel like this is going to be a very difficult decision. Most responses are definitely not in favor of this surgery. Thank you everyone for sharing your stories. I will have to think carefully about this. Diagnosis: 8/12/2009, DCIS, 6cm+, Stage 0, Grade 3, 0/7 nodes, ER-/PR- |

My inner thigh surgery went good and healing pretty fast and not in the crease. The scar is not noticable at all. I was very happy with it. It was a tender place to heal but not sorry I did it. Linda |

When my PS said he would make my areola from my inner thigh skin (from the crease), I was a bit alarmed. However, I decided to let him go ahead, because I trust him and because he's given me great results. I am so glad I did! To me, using the inner thigh skin made my areola look very real. It was uncomfortable and awkward after the surgery, because of the location of the incision, but not really painful. I had no problem with infection, but I cleaned the area frequently, and protected it as much as possible. (PM me for details). Diagnosis: 8/11/2008, DCIS, Stage 0, Grade 3, 0/3 nodes |
