My ten year old daughter was just diagnosed yesterday (confirmed today) with breast cancer. I have been searching for similar cases but have found nothing. My wife and I have no idea what type, stage, etc... We took her in to have a lump removed that was thought to be completely routine, but the surgeon found a solid mass that appeared to be a tumor behind the suspected area. We were assured that it was probably nothing to worry about but a sample would be sent to pathology. Went to a follow up visit 6 days later (yesterday) and the preliminary results were not good. Got a call today to confirm our worst thoughts. Is there anybody that has heard of such a young girl being diagnosed with breast cancer? We are in a holding pattern now and don't know what to do.

***UPDATE***

We just got a copy of the pathology report yesterday and I will read the diagnosis word for word. DIAGNOSIS: Infiltrating ductal carcinoma with focal solid papillary growth pattern and secretory feautures, grade II (moderately differentiated). The tumor extends to the inked surgical margins over a broad front. Approximately 2 cm in aggregate dimension portions of benign prepubertal mammary ductal parenchyma. No ductal carcinoma in situ component identified. Changes highly suspicious for large vessel invasion by tumor but no angiolymphatic space permeation by tumor identified. AJCC stage grouping: T2, NX, MX; stage IIA This was also listed in the microscopic description: This material was submitted for breast prognostic studies with the following results: Estrogen receptor negative, progesterone receptor negative, Her2/neu zero (not expressed) and Ki67 rate of 3% in most of the fields examined. Can someone tell me that my 10 year old daughter does not have breast cancer? We have not told her yet, but know we will as she will be seeing an oncologist within the next day or two.

Hello, ladies.....Just wanted to give you an update from Hannah's Nana....
First off, Nana sends many many hearfelt thanks to all you wonderful ladies here at BCO.......She said she would come herself but it really upsets her coming here......She asked that I convey her love and thanks to you all for all the prayers and well wishes for Our Little Swet Pea, Hannah......
Secondly, we need more prayer for Hannah as she has yet another node removal surgery this Friday at 1:15 pm Pacific Time.......The doctor is removing a total of 10 to 12 more nodes on Friday......If you don't have the address to send well wishes just PM me and I will gladly share......Just remember Hannah has a 2 yr old brother JJ and he likes Thomas the Train........We need to keep him in the loop too so he doesn't feel left out.......Hannah is so PO'd that she has to stay out of school YET AGAIN!.....She was all stoked this morning though and excited to tell all her friends about her trip to New York and meeting Robin from the GMA show!........Also her Nana and mother finally got a full diagnosis for Hannah...She is battling triple neg bc!.......The show called them a couple of days before the interview and asked them to find out so they could announce it on the show instead of just saying Hannah had bc...They wanted to know wha type.....Needless to say it devastated her Nana and her parents but Hannah is a fighter and I truly believe she will beat the odds.....I pray she will one day be that 100 yr old bc survivor like she met in California last week!........ Edited to add: Hannah is now NED!...She has No Evidnce of Disease!!!..YAHOOOO!!!!!!.

Hannah:  I am SO sorry to hear about your misfortune.  Cancer is bad at any age, but being only 10 years old...well, it's a hard pill to swallow.  I have a grandaughter who's almost 9 and she's the love of my life.  I hope and pray I'll never see her with any kind of cancer.  My  heart goes out to you and your family.  Know that you'll be in my heart, thoughts and prayers!

We serve a miracle working God and HE is our Great Physician...and all He wants us to do is pray and believe...and from this day forward, I will be praying for excellent results for you, Hannah!

Don't ever forget that the Lord loves you dearly and does have a plan for you life.  I have had cancer myself.....2 years this month.  I thank God that He was with me every step of the way.  There were days when I felt so alone and my faith was weak as my body was weak...but I just had to keep telling myself that GOD is in control and that we don't go by our feelings!  I know God will never leave you...He loves YOU SO much...please don't ever forget that.

You have a wonderful mom there to help you along.  I had no one (as my hubby left me about a year before I was diagnosed with cancer)....but, God never fails us!  I had my treatments and I am cancer free today, Praise the Lord.  I tell you, what He's done for others...He WILL do for you!!  Keep the faith, dear..and keep your eyes on your physician, NOT the physical condition you have...ok?  He's smiling down at you with tears of pride in His eyes...and He "will" see  you through, every step of the way!

God bless you and yours, my dear, and I pray that God will give you the desires of your heart!!

Love and cyber hugs.........

She is stage 2b.......I think her Nana said they are taking more nodes just ot test since she had 4 positive.....But all her scans are clear as I understand it....Nana mentioned something about an experiment because of Hannah's age.....She just turned 11 last month...I missed her Bday but I am going to send heran American Girl Gift Certificate.....The dolls are her favorite.........As far as the environmental factor goes, I was a bit upset that Robin woudl say triple negative is caused by the environment when no one really knows WHAT causes ANY breast cancer....It COULD be environmental.....I highly doubt it was hormones in the milk she drank though as her tumor did not feed on hormones........

hollyann- i appreciate so much you taking the time to keep us updated. I hope Hannah recovers from this latest surgery quickly. I missed the GMA thing. I have a hard time getting ready to be t work at 8 as it is...

I think that so many people want to be able to find a reason for stuff like this that makes no sense because it may make them feel a little better..Robin could not know if it was environment..genetics...so to say either was a little out of step in my book. Now every mother in that area will be freaking about the environment... enough of that rant...

Our little sweet pea is dancing with NED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What awesome news. Hang in there sweet pea and know that we all love you!

Little Red, Hannah is not my daughter...She is a little girl in California who was diagnosed with bc earlier this year when she was 10....I contacted her parents and keep in touch with her Grandmother via phone........She has been through the wringer and is doing wonderfully so far.....
Athena, no it isn't God's will for any of us to have breast cancer......It is an illness but not one of God's will......I was just concerned that Robin on GMA said that triple negative bc was caused from the environment when in actuality NO ONE knows what causes triple negative bc......I personally think if it is caused by environment then I and all my female neighbors who have lived in my neighborhood for the last 18 years should be triple negative...But so far only one of us out of the whole subdivision who had bc was triple negative.........I just don't want people to have the wrong idea that breast cancer is solely caused by the environment......Way back in the day we didn't have all the pollutants we have now and women still got triple negative bc.......Do you see what I mean?.....

Athena, you're right to raise the issue of possible lymphedema for our little sweet pea. Doctors always seem to downplay it, and it's even possible that, being treated by doctors who principally treat childhood cancers, Hannah's doctors are not at all aware of her risk. I wrote to her grandma early on urging her to see that Hannah was evaluated and followed by a well-qualified lymphedema therapist. And following this second surgery I even posted that suggestion on Hannah's website. It breaks my heart to think she might have to deal with that for the rest of her life, when there are steps she could take now to help reduce her risk.

I really hope they've already started seeing a fully-trained lymphedema therapist, or at the very least that they have an appointment coming up soon. There are ways to get back to softball wisely and mostly safely, but if they don't know how to protect her the results could be extremely distressing. Really praying they'll get the message, but guessing they're so relieved to be done with treatment they won't even want to think about it. <Sigh!>Frown

Here is the update on our sweet little Hannah.....From her own website.......I have persmission to update from Nana....
Great News!
Hannah went in a few days ago to have the drain removed and the pathology report was in earlier than expected….. All 11 nodes removed were clean!!! WHAT A RELIEF! So now, we can all get back to a normal life. It will be a while for a full recovery and for Hannah to get back on the softball field. We just wanted to let everyone know the good news as we are so relieved to finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.

This is such WONDERFUL news!...Thank you, Sweet Jesus, for an answer to our prayers!......

I came across this story for the first time and surprisingly I was not shocked.  My first feeling was a misdiagnosis but the more I read the more I felt that BC at 10 is not impossible.  I have young ones in my family who start menstruating at 10/11 and right now my niece who is only 8 is starting to show signs of puberty.  So starting puberty this early shows that hormonal activity can begin at young ages ie. risks of breast cancer - unfortunately. Scientists are probably doing studies on this but I have not done any searches to find out - anyone?

My prayers to Hannah and her family.

Activern, I was 9 when I started and my daughter was almost 8......As far as I know Hannah had not started yet........According to her Nana she hadn't anyway...........
Also Native American decendants seem to start earlier than other ethnic groups......We are part Cherokee Indian..........My sister Fran was 13 or 14 when she started so I am not sure if that has any factor in it or not....I DO know that the earlier you start the higher your chances.....I will definitely keep my DH on a leash when it comes to breast health........
