I'm currently awaiting biopsy results, but surgeon agrees with Birads 5 rating on mammo results and believes it is cancer. The lab results and surgeon both have indicated MRI is the next step to ascertain the extent of the disease and to double-check the other side. However, I spoke with a friend who had a bilateral masectomy a few years ago, and she recommended thermography and PET scan. What exactly is the difference between an MRI and a PET scan? Also, has anyone had thermogram done?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

mlrbelle- sorry you appear to be joining the "club", but you couldn't have found a better place to ask your questions and hear from some amazing women. When I was diagnosed after a biopsy in February 2009, I was scheduled for a bone scan, an MRI and PET scan, to see if I had any mets or other tumors within my body. The PET scan is a fasting scan where you fast prior to the test, they inject you with a sugar mix (apparently cancer likes and feeds off sugar) and then you are motionless for about an hour while it processes, then they do the CT scan. It will have the sugar congregating where there is cancer or a tumor. The MRI is done also with a contrast injection, and for this they usually do just the breasts (I had a breast MRI where I lay facedown with my breasts suspended through the table, very weird), but it gives a 3-D image of the breast to see if there are any other tumors or areas of concern in the breasts. Thermography is typically not used, at least in my area (south florida) for diagnosis. The bone scan was one more test just to make sure my bones had no tumors or areas of concern. Good luck, and keep us posted as to how you are progressing and what your next steps are. chelev - Life is what you make of it - keep what works and get rid of what doesn't. Mention was made here about lack of Thermography in South Florida. I know of a place in Cooper City if anyone reading this is interested. It's called Florida Natural Healthcare . I know women who use that. http://floridanaturalhealthcare.com/thermography.htmlI also have info on my blog regarding breast cancer http://www.rickfigley.com. Hope someone find this useful.
