My sister had a lumpectomy on 10-22-09. She felt very good for the first few days, but has had more pain progressing daily in the under arm area and in the breast and particularly in the nipple area. She says it is like an ache, not a sharp pain. The doctors have examined her breast and said it looks good, that this pain is natural and will get better eventually....prescribing Darvocet. Does this sound familiar to those of you who have had a lumpectomy?

What your sister is experiencing is normal. Lots of cutting going on there, and that affects nerves, causes bruising, etc. Hope she feels better soon. Diagnosis: 11/17/2001, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 3, 0/0 nodes, ER+/PR-, HER2+ |

I had my lumpectomy on 6/16/09 and I still get the occasional achy feeling in my breast (all over). I also did experience some sharp pains in the breast - but that could have been from Rads. I have been told that the achiness and sharp pains will lessen over time. I have experienced numbness also in the back of the arm that I have been told is normal due to the surgery. I guess all the nerves and blood vessels need time to heal! PS my nickname is Weeze! ML

Had my lumpectomy (a large one!) on 3/25/09 and reexcision to reopen the whole thing to get one more clean margin on 4/8/09. Still have the same pains as your sister is feeling. Onc and BS both said it is totally normal, sometimes the pain NEVER goes away completely. So many nerves have been cut, some will reform, some will "mat" and others never reattach. Also told me that rads (which I am in the middle of now) can start it all up again. Hope this helps. Linda I have been put on this frightening journey against my will, but I do not have to travel it alone.

Believe it or not... 3 years out, and I am still very sensitive... I am surprised by this too. I find that by tucking a soft pillow on my side when sleeping very helpful... and BIG FULL OH MY GOD IT's NICE TO SEE YOU HUGS still take my breath away due to the sensitivity... everyone's normal is a little different. I have met several women just like me... so I am okay with this... I think it all depends on your surgery. Healing takes time, more time then anyone explained to me... I wish someone had told me... so I share this with you so that you will know. Be kind to yourself, and be patient with the healing process. Best wishes, tlj.
