I had a left breast mastectomy in Sept (DCIS, high grade, er/pr -, comedo necrosis etc). I have decided I want to have my right breast removed even though at this point, it appears to be healthy. I can't have an MRI because of tissue expanders. Can anyone tell me if the gov't has any requirements in order to have this covered under OHIP? I have had genetic testing . . still waiting for results. Regardless, I want to have it removed. I'm just not sure if OHIP has requirements before they will pay for the mastectomy and reconstruction.

Mantra, I'm sure Mumayan is right. After all, if OHIP will pay for a cosmetic breast lift, in order to match the reconstructed one, I can't see why it wouldn't also cover a proph mx and recon. It's a whole lot cheaper than covering the cost of surgery/chemo/rads if cancer ever pops up the "good" breast. BTW, I've been thinking of doing the same thing, and then having recon on both.....
