I was within weeks of turning 58 when I was diagnosed, and turned 60 this year. No family history, however I have a paternal aunt who was 90 when diagnosed, and she just celebrated her 99th birthday in June!!! You are NEVER too old for a mammogram, no matter what some of those doctors tell you (especially the elderly)!!! I can't stress that enough to some of my pts. (I'm a home care RN). WOW sooooooooooo many of you are so young, and to think that they used to say you didn't even need a mammo before turning 40.Guess that went down the tubes!!! I was diagnosed this august and i had just had my 70th b'day in March. What a shock it was,in a way. Then again i have sisters that were all diagnosed late in life as well. One was 70 and she turned 82 this year. One was 65 and she turned 77 ths year and one was 51,and she lived to be 68,but she didn't die from the cancer, she died from a DR'S mistake during another unrelated surgery. My dad's mom had BC in 1929 had a mastectomy and only radiation and lived to be 94. Kathi |

I was 44, and had mamo's every year since I was 35, a paternal aunt was a 20 year survivor. She passed away in January from altzimers. My ob/gyn fought with my insurance company to have a mamo done at such a young age, because of my family history. My insurance only started to cover them at 40. Thank God that I did go for it, my first one came up with calcifications, that looks the same as DCIS, which I did have in the same breast (right) 9 years later. I look at my aunt, and a very dear friend of my Dad's that he grew up with, who was diagnosed at 37, and just turned 75 over the summer!!!!! Janet :)

I am 44, woke up on March 9th and my breast was swollen and double the size of my other one. I called the dr. the next day. Dr. Parker prescribed me antibiotics to treat me for masitis. It had been a week and the antibiotic did not work. So Dr. Parker prescribed a stronger antibiotic. Nothing changed after 2 weeks, and then he had me have a mammogram and ultrasound. My right side showed calcifacations, my left side showed nothing. April 3rd I went to see Dr, Walker (bs) she said she needed to do a biopsy on my left breast ASAP. So she did. That is when I had a feeling it was IBC, she had told me that she thought it must be IBC. She called me and that is when I got my dx on April 10th Left Breast IBC, Then April 21st I went to Phx Baptist Hosp. to have my right side biopsied. Received a call from Dr. Walker and was dx on April 25th Right Breast DCIS. Did chemo for 6 months, Had radical mastectomy Sept. 29th, removed a 12.5 tumor from my left breast. More cancer has spread. Have to do more chemo with radiation. Right breast is cancer free. Blessings, Elizabeth

I had discharge from breast when I was 38 (1995), had found lump, too. Had biopsy - doctor was so old- couldn't get to the point and get biopsy. Talked about removing lump with doctor Layra Esserman at UCSF, showed her article about Nikol Kidman - she had lump removed. Doctor said do not remove lump, but to have mammo every year, which I did, never missed one. My sister in Israel had lump 18 years ago, and doctor removed it. She never had cancer. Thanks god. I was examined my breast like doctor recommend. In 2002-2003 I got pain in right breast, and it got little bigger than left one. I was asking for diagnostic mammo, but didn't get one. I lost weight - around 4-5 pounds ( which never happened before) and got terrible knees pain. I was scared- i came to doctors to see if I have no cancer, but screening mammo was normal. 2003- my another sister , why just turns 50 got cancer. I againcame to the Kaiser and asked about diagnostic mammo, but no again. I complained on pain, but nobody care. At 2006 I couldn't bear the pain anymore and ask to see a surgeon. Surgeon referred me to a diagnostic mammo, after that- yltrasound, biopsy - I had IDC tumor 4 sm; tumor 0,8 sm; and lymf node tumor - 1 sm I was 48. Now I'm almost 51. I was diagnosed at the age of 29 years. I found a lump in my left breast while breast feeding my 11 month old baby girl. At first thought it was something related to breast feeding but when felt it again when showering a week ago. Decided to ask for a doctors opinion who recommended FNB. DX with IDC. That was 12 years ago. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.. Never give up on anyone. Especially yourself !!!
