Some of us will, some of us won't, but it's an ugly beast to try to tackle alone. I think I'd rather have cancer than quit. Sadly, I can't quit cancer. Dunno if I can quit smoking or not, but I just read a study that says smoking (nicotine) interferes with and blocks chemo by 61%.

If I'm gonna have to go through this crap, it darned well better work. I've come to terms with every other aspect of this mess I've been presented with so far. Sometimes with tears, sometimes with humor, sometimes with quiet hugs from hubby. Smoking not so much. I like it. It's my friend, my crutch, my safe harbor in a crazy world. It's killing me. It's time to say good-bye.
My quit date is 1/19/09. My husband will be joining me. Cold turkey for me, patches for him. (I am avoiding more nicotine just as much as I am sugar.)
Anyone out there care to join us?

Galsal, our forsythia, Japanese weeping cherry trees and tulips bloomed when we had a 80 degree week a couple weeks ago - then we had a frost and they all died. Just checking in real quick to wish you all a Happy and Peaceful Easter....
Lisamarie,
Don't know if what you are going through is in relation to the holiday but....
A big heads up to you and anyone else for whom this is your first holiday... Any time you go through a 'first' of any kind after quitting can be a little tricky and lead to some pretty crazy cravings....
I quit in January the year I quit and we went to my brother's house for Thanksgiving... Most of my SIL's family smokes and was there.... I got hit with whopper of a craving totally out of the blue... Had
to leave for a bit and took a walk until it passed....
Hugs and strength that, whatever the challenge you face, will soon pass!

Galsal....
You are doing so wel!!!! I am very proud of you!!
Karen,
Doesn't matter what we call ourselves.... What matters is that we all choose not to smoke just for today..... although, Butt Kickers I think reflects the fierce women that we are to have taken such a huge, and liberating, step!!... So proud of you and Jo, too! Just amazing how far we all have come!
Ps.... Went to see Titanic in 3-D... in the THEATER yesterday. At 3 1/2 hours long if you include previews, it is something I never would have done had I still smoked... So cool to not be itching to get out to smoke!!!

I was thinking today it might be time to post an updated 'Quit Smoking Roll Call'. Haven't had one since early December! The last one was on page 201, if you want to check it out...
For the new people, the roll call is a list of all on this thread who have quit or are trying to quit and their quit dates.... It can be really handy when trying to remember everyone here plus, it's kinda cool when you see your name there for the first time!
If anyone that has joined us since Early December would like to be included, post or PM me you quit date and I'll get you added to the list!
For anyone who is thinking about quitting and would like to be added as 'Getting a plan in place', we welcome you as well!!!

There are no withdrawal symptoms with Chantix so you don't need to "wean" down. The reason why they tritate up to start with--is to control for stomach problems. Starting at a full dose increases stomach upset substantially.
Chantix only fills half of the nicotinic receptors in the brain--they were designed that way to avoid withdrawal symptoms--unlike nicotine which fills all the nicotinic receptors. Because it only fills half of the receptors--they can be some nicotine withdrawal symptoms--which is why the Mayo clinic now combines chantix wtih nicotine replacement products. The lastest Mayo guidelines for medications are all for combos now--one long lasting med (chantix, zyban or The Patch) and one short term med used as needed for break through cravings (gum, lozenge, spray, inhaler).
Wishing everyone a most joyous Easter. VJ

Don't quit smoking just for the BC...smoking causes lots of other things. I am 54 , just dx with BC ... At 41 , I was dx with COPD from smoking. After being a 26 yr heavy smoker, that DX stopped me in my tracxks. Quit cold turkey and yes, it was the hardest thing I ever did , but do-able. I couldnt bear being leashed up to oxygen , which is where copd eventually leads to.
I have been dodging surgeries and oxygen for yrs now and I feel like the train just may be stopping now that I have BC. COPD does not ' mix well' with anesthethia or surgeries.
Honestly ? I am more concerned with whats left of my lung tissue right now than my breast tissue!
If I can quit , ANYONE can.,... I was a hard core heavy smoker. If you find yourself saying ' try' ( " I'm going to TRY to quit) you're not serious enough. X that word out of your vocab.
They have patches and gum now, buy some mints, suck on straws, keep your hands busy, but dont get ' caught;' like I did ( with COPD). We are not immune to other serious disease just because we have one.
Please quit smoking ... I hope you will never know what you may have dodged.
Blessings!

Hello again, My name is Pat and it has been 5 days and 11 hours since I quit cold turkey. This is my umpteenth time to quit using nicotine. I smoked for 15 years and switched to "snuff" to help quit smoking almost 12 years ago. I wouldn't recommend using snuff to quit smoking.
I find that Icebreakers is really the ticket for me. The coolness and hardness really satisfies when I am "Jonesing" for "pinch".
Ishie(Di) really thought it was cool that I made it through the weekend. 5 hour drive(one-way) 2 pre-teen boys, and a weekend with her family in a rehab home where her father is recovering from a massive stroke.
BTW- Seaside Memories. I quit on april 3rd at 10:07 am CDT. I will not use nicotine tomorrow(sorry-it doesn't make sense to say I will not smoke and I doubt that there is a stop chewing thread on the BCO.)
Let me at this "beast"

Congrats to all of you on your continuing successes. I am a former smoker, one who never thought she would be able to sucessfully quit. I tried everything over a period of decades. In 2007, I finally did quit with the help of Chantix. I am still amazed that I did it and know that if I ever started again, I would likely not be able to quit again. I was hard core additicted to the drug, not the ritual.
I no longer have cravings and the ones I had for the first year were really not that bad and were infrequent. No small feat since my husband smoked and still does. Everytime I craved a cigarette, I craved being a non-smoker even more.
I did it and I know you can, too. I am rooting for you!

Thank you so much for your post! A diagnosis of COPD or any smoking related illness is enough to make you really take a hard look at whether or not it is worth it... I agree... quitting was the hardest thing I have ever done, including going back to college after being layed off at age 40! Dang those kids are smart!
I quit smoking and, once I was through the early period, have never looked back wishing I had continued to smoke... My wish is that all who desire to quit find the support they need, be it here or elsewhere, and the strength within to succeed....

Welcome... I also think it is cool that you made it through the weekend! I will, with your permission, add your quit date to our roll call! Please feel free to hang out here... I would think the issues are similar when trying to quit any tobacco product!
Tampa,
Thanks for the support!!! Congrats on quitting and staying quit while living with someone who smokes... That is really hard! I have to agree that, knowing if I even have one I'd be done, has kept me on the straight and narrow

I'm baaack! I quit for 4 months, I started up again, quit for another few months, started again, etc ad nauseam. When I woke up from my mastectomy surgery - during a non-smoking phase, no less - the first thing I asked for was an ash tray. Obviously had no cigs in my hosital johnny, but clear what was the first thing on my mind (though I have no recollection of this, the nurses had a good laugh).
My father passed away two weeks ago, my grandmother passed away a week ago, my cousin who cared for me during chemo is in the middle of a 12-hour emergency surgery to remove a malignant abdominal tumor, my small business is closing, and those are just the big things - there are so many more little ones. How on EARTH do I quit now? Stress is definitely my trigger.
I have tried acupuncture, the patch, the pills, the works. I despise myself for continuing this nasty habit, but there is so little that gives me any comfort these days, and the cigs do.
Lettuce weight and sea.
