Hi,  I am taking Tamoxifen for Atypical Hyperplasia.  A friend of mine was telling me that I should not be using the artificial sweetner called Splenda because it is a known cancer causing agent?  Anyone comments?  Thanks

I have never heard of splenda being a cancer causing agent.  It is made from sugar.

Oops, if so, I'm in trouble.  I'm diabetic, diagnosed a month before the BC, and everything is Splenda in my life including the cranberry juice I'm drinking right now. Not on Tamoxifen though. I'm on Aromasin.

..all high potency sweetners are sugar alcohols.  splenda imo is better than most bc its made from sugar but it's still deemed as 'artificial' bc it goes thru a sythentic transformation.  you can argue the case that all art sweetners cause cancer and it would be the same argument regarding splenda.

I read an interesting book a while ago that discussed the cancer - artificial sweetner scandal.  Interestingly a lot of the anti-artificial sweetner marketing was funded by the sugar industry.  They are safe.

..I honestly don't see why straight natural sugar cane is so bad.  I asked a Dr. at Columbia to explain the tenuated (I think thats the name) process, where glucose is extracted into your cells prior to chemo and the cancer cells open up and gobble sugar, enlarge? and then the chemo targets it better.  She said cells do not behave that way and they are very slow moving for that to be effective.  ..then again, she is very conservative.

Who really knows? I strive for moderation but can say that when I had a high potency sweeter class for work, tasting everything out and even not out on the market yet from around the globe. I had a monster headache that entire week.  This was hosted by the makers of nutrasweet so very biased in terms of cancer info, etc. This was twelve years ago and my cancer is grade 3 (in terms of a timeline) so what Im saying is that I do not believe that my cancer was caused my high potency sweetner class.  ...soy either (daily for over eight years) - ER only 25%.

I heard all artifical sweetners are cancer causing.  I use to have equal all the time and stoped after my diagnosis.  I wasn't taking any chances whether it is true or not.  I try to stay away from anything artificial.  I also went to a workshop related to breast cancer caused from milk.  Now I only drink organic milk.  It all makes me feel like I'm at least doing something.

Some breast cancer cells require estrogen to grow. Estrogen binds to and activates the estrogen receptor in these cells. Tamoxifen is metabolized into compounds that also bind to the estrogen receptor but do not activate it. Because of this competitive antagonism, tamoxifen acts like a key broken off in the lock that prevents any other key from being inserted, preventing estrogen from binding to its receptor. Hence breast cancer cell growth is blocked.

Tamoxifen was discovered by ICI Pharmaceuticals[2] (now AstraZeneca) and is sold under the trade names Nolvadex, Istubal, and Valodex. However, the drug, even before its patent expiration, was and still is widely referred to by its generic name "tamoxifen."

Read it and weep... I've switched to agave nectar as a sugar subtititute because of it's low "glycemic index". This book was written by a doctor who is a cancer survivor. I recommend it to everyone-regardless if they've been diagnosed with cancer. I've read again and again, from various sources, that sugar is bad for our bodies. And the high fructose corn syrup that is in almost all of our processed/boxed foods "is to sugar a little like opium is to poppies'." From Page 62 An exerpt from the book 'Anticancer', by Servan-Schreiber:

Pages 59-60

Cancer is more widerspread today in the West and has been increasing since 1940. Hence, we must examine what has changed in our countries since World War II. Three major factors have drastically disrupted our environment over the last fifty years:

1. The addition of large quantities of highly refined sugar to our diet

2. Changes in methods of farming and raising animals and, as a result, in our food

3. Exposure to a large number of chemical products that didn't exist before 1940

Page 61 When we eat sugar or white flour--foods with a high "glycemic index"--blood levels of glucose rise rapidly. The body immediately releases a dose of insulin to enable the glucose to enter the cells. The secretion of insulin is accompanied by the release of another molecule, called IGF (insulinlike growth factor), whose role is to stimulate cell growth. In short, sugar nourishes tissues and makes them grow faster. Futhermore, insulin and IGF have another effect in common: They promote the factors of inflammation, which as we saw in chapter 4, also stimulate cell growth and act, in turn, as fertilizer for tumors.
