My mother was diagnosed with BC a little over a month ago now. She had a lumpectomy and removal of the lymph nodes. They found node participation 5/12. They scheduled her for chemo & radiation. At this point they labeled her 3A. The chemo was supposed to start last Thursday. They scheduled her for a CT scan before chemo. Her onc came into the room and said they were cancelling chemo because the scan found an inch spot on her liver. She told us that this spot being cancer would make her stage 4! I am scared. My mom is scared. Up until this we kept the positive thoughts. We know so many people who have survived but I dont know anything about stage 4. Help me get thru this night. Is it possible that this 'spot' is B9 ... honestly ... what are the chances?

I wouldn't have any idea what to tell you. There isn't anyway of knowing without a biopsy. Does it look like other spots that she has had? You just need to talk to her Dr. I'm so sorry that you all are going through this. |

Thank you for answering. I am so new to this. I just don't know what to ask. I try to be supportive and read everything I can find - but it just keeps going down the hill :( I dont know what the other spots looked like. Maybe I will ask that on Thursday. She did have a biopsy of the liver spot on Monday - results Thurs. |

It could of course, possibly be benign. But it's equally possible to be a met, especially as your Mum had node involvement. The biopsy wll tell you if it is a met,and if so, treatment will begin asap. I hope that this is not the case-but even if it is, rest assured that there are many treatments which your Mum could try, which may help. Sadly at stage 1V the aim is solely to keep the symptoms under control for as long as possible, and slow down progression. But with new drugs becoming available some people do survive for several years-some even longer. At the moment, take a step at a time-it really does make it all a bit more manageable. Good luck. Hi Angie -- By now you may have an answer. I just want to say - thinking of you and hoping for you and your mother. There are benign spots on the liver, so don't give up hope yet. My sister, who also had bc, had a liver spot that turned up on a CT scan. (She had the CT scan because our mother died of an aortic aneurysm, and her doctor was being careful....) She was totally panicked, of course , but it turned out to be a hemangioma - quite benign. One other thing: stage 4, especially in older women, can often be treated quite effectively. My aunt had her original bc at 70, about 26 yrs ago. At 89 she had a metastasis to her spine -- they treated it with radiation, and she's doing fine. *Nothing* in the last 7 years. All the best! mouser - IDC 0.5 cm + DCIS 1 cm, 2007; Stage 1, grade 2, ER+PR-, Her-; lumpectomy, rads, letrozole. More calcs 2008; mastectomy.
