ok I'm gonna try this again. I was wondering if anyone who has had excisional bx or lumpectomy noticed there breast differant afterward? Not just in size but for instance...I'm a small b cup...have 3 kids so boobs don't sit up anymore...however after bx my affected boob sits a little higher..the areola-nipple sit higher than the right breast...the area that was excised is now very hard and I have some bruiseing...the skin over the excised area appears "gathered" or wrinkled....also even more concerning my areola is no longer round now more egg shaped the bottom part of my areola is now non existent...like the bottom part is pulled up or gathered...very little pain..not red...breast does seem more "full" than the other...no redness, not warm....random shooting pain that goes as quickly as it comes occasional itch not so much tho. So I'm really worried has anyone ever had these odd physical changes. The gathering or areola changing shape? I saw the doc, he says all is good...but I'm worried I'm seeing signs of ibc and not being scanned correctly? *UPDATE* ok so the last two days the wrinkling has actually started to look better, but now guess the hell what! I have a freaking sent! WTF are you kidding me? What is that? It looks like when ur pregnant and retaining fluid and you press on ur leg and it leaves the dent for a minute...yea that's what it looks like. Well I'm calling the doc tomorrow morning and I'm gonna go pay the 3rd copay since my surgery...probably for himt to say what he keeps saying " oh this looks real good" omg I am a freaking basket case!

I had an excisional/lumpectomy in July. And I remember seeing some of the same things. Puckering, odd shaped-aereola, etc. The itching/pains are nerves and healing. Of course, I had a lot of tissue removed ... I was a droopy small B cup, too, and the doc took out a 5cmx3cmx3cm amount of tissue (which was extensive LCIS mixed with DCIS and a tiny invasive spot). I would trust your doc ... or get another opinion if that makes you feel better. I hope your results are B9.

the area was quite large considering my small breast but I don't know the actual size. The results are benign but I worry about ibc because of all the changes I'm noticing in my breast. When you say puckering...are you meaning gathering or is that something differant.

I had mine last year, and other than the scar my breast looked exactly the same.  But then I had an awesome surgeon at md anderson.  But I was really worried before hand, because I had seen pictures and read of puckering and changes in the breast.  So I think it is very common, and you doctor would know if it looked unusual.

I had an excisional in July.  The surgeon  recommended I wear a sports bra all day/night for at least 2-3 weeks after the surgery.  Wearing a bra helps the excision heal properly.  I did have some itching/pinching feelings, and the tissue under the excision was bumpy at first.  The tissue is pretty smooth now.

I am a D cup, and the dr removed 6.5x4x3cm.  Right after the surgery, the breast was much perkier than the other --I kind of liked it!--but it has gone back to its droopy 46 year mom-of-two breast...Cry

So, my suggestion is wear a comfortable sports bra for at least 2-3 weeks.

karen337 I'm also from lousiana (new orleans)...just thought I'd tell you...anyways...I'm confused on exactly what puckering is. Is it the "gathering" I'm referring to?

I've read that scar tissue can cause puckering...is it possible the now firm...at one point fluid filled spot is scar tissue and that's why I have the puckering?

Jalmom09, I have just about every change you have described above.  My 7mm lump was in the six o'clock position and very close to the surface skin so I got some of my surface skin excised also.  When BS drew the skin together to stitch it, it kind of gathered to make a wrinkle right below the areola.  I don't know that he could have done otherwise but I don't like that at all.  I had to use lotion during my rads, and I will keep on using lotion and massaging until I get that wrinkle out, and I will no matter how long it takes!  Because mine was pulled together below the areola, it is a little more "frowny" than the other one and that's not going to change without cosmetic surgery.  I'm trying to get just over that.  Finally, I also have what I call my "bullet hole" scar, from a failed attempt to get Mammosite radiation.  A nice reminder of a procedure that didn't even work out.

well I don't just have 1 wrinkle...I have a patch of wrinkled skin. It is the skin that lays over the area that was excised. So the patch is about 2 inches long and a half to 1 inch wide. When I pressdown on that area it wrinkles even more. The excised area went from fluid filled to very firm. Not like a lump just the entire area is firm instead of soft tissue. I find myself constantly stareing at my breast. I dnt care about how it looks I care weather this is a symptom of ibc or some form of cancer that my surgeon is not taking into consideration. I'm 24 and have 3 kids..so although most women my age would care about the appearance I could careless...my hunny is gonna love me anyway you know? I'd be willing to send pictures if anyone thought they could tell me if this is something they have seen or if they think it needs to be seen AGAIN by the surgeon. I've been searching the net for skin chamges after lumpectomy/excisional bx. There isn't much out there. I read alot about dimpling which is not what I have. I'm frustrated and nervous and scared all over again. LisaPG, don't worry about the bx at all! I felt minor discomfort after the procedure but nothing a pain pill won't cure. My breast was swollen for a week or 2 and is still bruised 4 weeks out and as uve read the skin over the excised area is all wrinkled/puckered/gathered however it os best described. But really for the most part my boob looks great. The incision was made around the areola...I have a nonexistant scar. So if this wrinkling was not there you would never know I had anything done! Good luck to you...

Jalmom--maybe you have a hematoma?  I wound up with one after my lumpectomy & then reexcision.  It's hard and kind of functions like a space saver.

Just a thought..

Have you seen your doctor since the surgery?  If you are concerned I would call the doctor.  Don't take no for an answer.  You cannot keep worrying about this.  I had both stitches and staples to close the excision, so I could see how the doctor closed the cut.

After my excisional, I iced constantly.  It definitely helped with the pain -- the painkillers helped too!

Lisa, glad you liked my joke.

For all of you going for your excisional, I wish  you the very best.

You can PM me if you wish.

I had that too.  The dr told me it is because they removed tissue, but that with time the fat and breast tissue would "fill" the dent.   Now almost 4 months after the excisional the dent is almost gone.  Don't worry, I think this is normal.

but its literally all of a sudden and right underneath it I can still feel the "firm" we will call it scar tissue....so its not like empty...so I'm not understanding how this can be from removed tissue. I'm a freaking basket case...I'm calling my surgeon once again in the a.m. This is ridiculous!!

I had a lumpectomy but because of where my tumor was I lost my nipple.  The incision is shaped something like a K and originally had little puckery points at the ends.   Now,  4 months later, they are gone!   Even without the nipple my breast looks surprisingly "normal".   I definitely endorse the suggestion above about wearing a snug sports bra during recovery.  My surgeon (a woman) suggested it because it feels good and helps with the healing.

I had  "firm" or hard bumps under the "dent."

I know how hard this is.  It is so weird looking at you breast, and it is soooo different.  I think I slept  with my bra long after the doctor told me I had to because it was difficult to look at it.  It didn't look like my breast.  First it was swollen; then it was all these odd colors; then the "dent"; it was hard under the scar, etc.

Call your doctor if you are concerned.  You have every right to do so.  You can also vent and rant here any time you want.  We are here to listen and support you.

I had bx two weeks ago today. It was benign by the way! Thank the Lord for that! The bruising at the excisional sight (at the bottom about 6 o'clock) is gone but about a week ago a small bruise formed at about 9 o'clock. It hasn't gone away but changes colors. One day it looks like it's going away then the next it's back to looking like it did. I don't know if this is normal or not. I have an appt. with my surgeon next week. I had found the lump during a BSE but the mammogram didn't pick it up so they did an ultrasound and found it that way. I'm guessing that since they did the ultrasound that they would have picked up anything else that looked suspicious. I have not had any of the puckering but my breast is still very tender and looks quite a bit bigger than the other. Has anyone else had this weird bruising? My surgeon did tell me before the surgery that there would be a "dent"

Hi I was looking at all the posts about difficulties post lumpectomy.  My incision is around the areola closest to arm and it has a wrinkled, puckered appearance but I just took it to appear that way because the doctor closed it on the outside with that new glue.  My breast is really swollen and sore still 2 weeks post op.  My tumor was really deep so I haven't seen any surface bruising,  it is still very sore and I still have the sharp shooting pains occassionally.  I also have hard areas under the incisional area.  I had been wondering if this was normal for everyone else.  So, I don't have a dent in my breast yet, but with all the tissue my surgeon took out, 23cms or 10 inches in circumference, I may.  I have also noticed that my breast is a little higher and the nipple points a different direction, but some of you have said that may resolve with time is that right?

Hi, Jalmom and other ladies -

I had basically a double lumpectomy 8 years ago - they took a large excisional biopsy from near my nipple and then the main incision on the breast is on the side at my request because I asked them not to go in from the top so I could still wear bathing suits, etc with no scar showing.

First, the indentation is where they took out the flesh - it is called a "defect".  It's not only normal to expect a defect, it should be expected.  If you don't have one, you're really lucky.

The puckering or gathering of the skin is also related to the amount of flesh removed and the stitches as well.  All of this is perfectly normal.

Sorry if your cosmetic results are not what you had hoped for.  I know how it feels, believe me.

Also, the puckering could possibly get a bit better as the stitches desolve.
