I will be travelling to the U.S. on Sunday (from Israel). It's a 12 hour flight, so I'd like to know some travel tips so I can avoid LE.
I have a sleeve and gauntlet, and I know to keep hydrated. I was told on another thread to "exercise" but what does that mean exactly?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Leah

Leah, the general advice I've heard is deep breathing, stay hydrated and every so often, raise your arms over head and gently pump your fists about 20 times. Compression wear works best if muscles are moving, so it's easy to sit too still in an airplane seat for a long trip. My daughter did the Birthright trip last December--just as the Gaza bombing started. She still had a great time in Israel. She gets migraines with flying, so I just told her to stay hydrated, and no problems. Have a great trip. Kira Diagnosis: 5/10/2008, IDC, 1cm, Stage Ib, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

might want to consider a glove for a flight that long , instead of the gauntlett. An hour flight trapped fluid in my fingers wearing the gauntlet, and now I am wearing a custom fingertip to axilla model. If I had known that could happen I would have gloved up on the way....... Moogie |

Remember that packing can also be a high risk activity. I used to try to cram everything into one suitcase sitting on the floor. Now I try to pack in phases, put my suitcase on a bed or table and use two lightweight bags instead of one overstuffed one. I travel with a small rolling bag and a small well-padded knapsack. If I have to pack at the last minute, I wear my sleeve and glove while packing. Good luck and travel safe. |

Thank you to everyone for the great advice! The flight went well, and everything seems to be fine. I hope the upcmoing ones go as well (to LA from NY, to Toronto from LA, and then home to Israel). Kira, what a time for your daughter to travel! I've heard terrific things about the Birthright program, and I'm glad your daughter enjoyed it. Hope she comes again! MOOGIE I just ordered a custom compression armsleeve and guantlet. Are you saying that I should wear the armsleeve but purchase a full glove instead of he guantlet? Diagnosis: 7/10/2009, DCIS, <1cm, Stage 0, Grade 3, 0/3 nodes, ER-/PR- |

Leah, do you wear the sleeve and gauntlet when you aren't traveling? I just wore my sleeve and gauntlet for the first time for a trip across the US and after wearing them for over 6 hours straight, I couldn't wait to get them off when I landed. I've never liked tight clothes and after all that time, I was really tired of my elbow and fingers being difficult to bend. (My "gauntlet" covers the first joints of my fingers even though all the ones I've seen on line end at the knuckles.) I also got a sore spot where it ends on my forefinger even though I don't feel any bump or irregularity there. I looked at the step-up speak out web site and they say to just wear the garments for a short time at first and build up wearing time, but if I'm just wearing them as a preventive measure for travel, I don't see how to do that. I usually travel about once a month. The whole world is a narrow bridge and the main thing is to not fear.

Bluedasher, it is a good idea to break them in, by wearing them for a couple of hours at a time at home before you fly. Too bad about the chafe--maybe after you wash them, they'll soften a bit. Some gauntlets do go further down--especially Jobst. Wearing compression is not fun--and it does take getting used to it. Glad you only need it once in a while. Leah--congratulations on a successful trip from Israel. I'm sure the rest of the travel will go well. My daughter really enjoyed Birthright, after the El Al security guys stopped interrogating her. I lived in Israel for 6 months when I was a lot younger--took a break from college, I did an Ulpan program near Caesaria, it was a beautiful spot, and I picked up Hebrew so quickly, and unfortunately, lost it when no one spoke it at home. Welcome! Hoping you're having a wonderful time. Kira Diagnosis: 5/10/2008, IDC, 1cm, Stage Ib, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

My tip for future viewers is that you will be warmer because of the sleeve, so you may want to wear a short sleeve shirt, and of course have a sweater in case you get cold. |
