I'm past chemo, surgery, radiation, and now on Femara. Has anyone heard of any recommendations regarding the H1N1 vaccine and recent BC cancer patients? Are our immune systems strong enough to take the vaccine and/or do we take our chances with possible exposure?

I haven't heard specifically about recent bc patients vs. current. One item I did read, which my docs didn't seem to be aware of, is when dealing with immune compromised patients it is recommended that you wait at least 4 weeks between regular flu shot and HIN1. Also the nasal version of H1N1 is not recommended for those people with lowered immune systems. Diagnosis: 9/8/2009, IDC, Stage IIIb, PR+, HER2- |

Thank you for responding. I haven't read anything for sure as well. Some say it won't hurt, others say don't do it. Hmmmm..... Completed DD AC & DD Taxol 6/13/08, Bilateral mastectomy 7/2 followed by radiation. Radiation finished 9/29/08. Not sure I'll do reconstruction.

It's hard to know what to do. I suppose if I don't make a decision soon they will run out of the vaccine and the decision will be made for me. Diagnosis: 9/8/2009, IDC, Stage IIIb, PR+, HER2- |

I can't get either the regular or the H1N! shot. My doctors office says they are completely out of the regular and don't know when they can get anymore and they haven't received any of the H1N1 either. Maybe its just because I'm in a small town in Nebraska. |

I don't think that it is recommended for people with compromised immune systems. I called my onc the other day and the nurse told me to get the H1N1 vaccine along with the flu shot. I called my family doctor and the flu shot is not being given until January?? Uh, isn't that in the middle of flu season?? The H1N1 shot is not available here for at least another two weeks. But what I'm confused over is that they say you should get the flu shot first and then the H1N1 shot. Sounds stupid to me! I'll have to double check. Kim "I Live to Run" - Melissa Ethridge

Okay, so that's in Canada. I thought my situation was due to being out in the middle of nowhere land. Kind of scary that we are in the middle of a 'pandemic' and can't even get the regular shots let alone the one for the bad version. |

I just got both the regular flu shot and the H1N1 flut shot at my allergists'. But I'm one of those people with serious respiratory issues (I'm one of those asthmatics who lands in hospital having steroids pumped into my system). Right now, H1N1 is just being issued through health departments along critical pathways. But we had to scrape the bottom of the barrel (well, those little glass vials) to get the regular flu shot - she's expecting another shipment next week. They cut back regular flu shot production to produce more H1N1 - guess we should have all gotten them at Walgreen's last month, but I didn't know! My DH, who is just finishing treatment for EC - his oncologist doesn't have a supply of vaccine, but patients in treatment are fairly high on the list. Sue - Proud to be Krista's Mom

What is EC? I'm glad you were able to get the shots due to your existing condition. It sounds like it is in short supply just about everywhere then. |

My onc recommended the regular flu shot, but I forgot to ask about the H1N1. I am going to email them and see but I'm kind of nervous about getting that one. chelev - Life is what you make of it - keep what works and get rid of what doesn't. EC is esophageal cancer. Next most aggressive after pancreatic. They do 5Fu (continuous infusion), taxol and cisplatin with radiation to blast it to smithereens (he went twice daily for 3 weeks, with weekly chemo), and then remove the esophagus. Daily hydration - they're trying to protect his kidneys. Beastly treatment. Cat scan next week to see how he's doing. I've been embarassed by being frightened by my dinky little Grade 1 BC ever since I found out what he was facing. Sue - Proud to be Krista's Mom

I was told by my doctor to definitely have the H1N1 vaccine. I have respiratory issues as well. The vaccine should be in her office next week and I am booked to get it on Nov 9. PIP - multi focal, FEC100/Tax, rads, dble mast with no recon, ooph/hyst, arimidex
