I also read Jane Plant's book 'Your Life in Your Hands' after being diagnosed grade 3 in situ, triple Neg. I gave up ALL dairy in June. Now 3 weeks into chemo and it is horrible. Also on Beatrice trial with rads in feb. How serious is the dairy/growth hormones debate? Why is there not a public outcry. Countries could save billions?! I have never been overweight, eat very healthily, I thought. But I ate lots of dairy thinking I was getting extra calcium and avoiding osteoporosis.

I think that before you blame the milk etc. on bc. We need to research more. I do not believe milk red meat etc causes bc. There are so many variables in this story of cancer and we all do not know what they are. I do not think that giving up dairy is the answer. Chemo is horrible sometimes. I just finished on Monday. It get better. Look toward the end. Have strength. Hugs Dianne |

Steph Dairy is out for the moment until I can do more research. Have you read Jane Plant's book? I am naturally sceptical about ANY theory but giving myself best shot at this. It has made us look more closely at all food contents but we are not paranoid. Sainsbury do a good range of non dairy products. We are learning to eat whole food with no additives. Fresh green is best but we still have organic meat, eggs, home made bread, soups and grow herbs/ salads. Along with a full time job. Yachty- Have you read "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell? It is worth the read if you are concerned about dairy. I will never eat dairy again! Most libraries carry this book so you can probably read it for free. |

Yachty, I had not heard of the book until I saw your post. So I checked out Jane Plant's website, and her Support site. I noticed that very little information is revealed unless you buy the book or subscribe to the site (for a fee). It's also important to note that Jane Plant, may have a politcal agenda regarding veganism/vegetarism. (Example - see Jane Plant's comments on http://www.vegetarian.org.uk/) Although she frequently referred to the the scientific basis of her plan, her FAQ page says: <font><font>"4. How Successful is the Plant Programme? The whole argument sounds very familiar to those of us who lived through the demonization of eggs a few decades ago. It's true that many folks can't tolerate cows milk - they did not inherit a needed gene to digest lactose. For them, this diet may be sound. But there are populations that have adapted to eating diets rich in dairy who are healthy and long-lived. I personally can't accept yet another case of one-size-fits-all dietary advice that dismisses folks who don't fit the theory as a mere "paradox" - like the french and high fat diets. I very much doubt it. I had problems with dairy since I was an infant - I get bad, real bad canker sores if i eat dairy. So, there's no diary in my diet at all, and that is since I was an infant. And I still had this multifocal DCIS covering almost my entire right breast. Diagnosis: 8/28/2009, DCIS, 6cm+, Stage 0, Grade 2, 0/3 nodes, ER+/PR+ |

I do believe there is a lot to the diary theory. I read Plant's book a while ago and it really hit home with me. I was a huge dairy consumer. One of the reasons it is so dangerous is because of all the hormones and antibiotics that are given to cattle so they produce more milk. This goes right to us and causes our estrogen levels to rise, which we know is linked to bc. Dr Plant swears that when she stopped eating all the yogurt, which was prescibed to settle her stomach through chemo, her tumors finally shrunk. When she went to a nutrtious diet, her cancer went away and has not returned. For her, it obviously worked. The key is to get our hormones in balance, feed our cells with the nutrition it needs so they can fight off free radicals and learn to handle everyday stress. There are so many contributing factors to cancer. We need to try to minimize all of them. That is why I now say no to dairy, and cheap hamburger that probably comes from dairy cows. I also take iodine, which chelates toxins from breast tissue and other cells and do all I can to boost my immune system with antioxidants. This disease is not a crap shoot as some may believe. It has causes and they vary for each of us. I think it is important for us all to figure out what is going wrong in our body chemistry and try to put it back in balance. |

Don't you think that the chemo she had may have had something to do with her tumours shrinking? It seems that a lot of women who don't eat dairy products end up with BC. I would agree that we need to watch out for foods that can increase hormones. And I tend to be careful due to the natural hormones present in milk that is meant to make baby mammals grow. But I don't think it is dairy that is the main culprit in breast cancer. PIP - multi focal, FEC100/Tax, rads, dble mast with no recon, ooph/hyst, arimidex
