I'm not great with the nutrition stuff, but I'm sure someone with better info will be able to give those details in a bit :> I found eating lots of fruit, soups and bland foods were the things I tolerated the best while on chemo. Some chemos can alter your taste buds, so you'll have to see what does and does not work for you. I not take any supplements while on chemo because I was told they can protect all cells, including cancer cells....and I wanted those suckers dead! Also, there is a great thread on this same forum called More Tips (and a Shopping List) for Getting Through Chemo- this has tips on food and everything else you need to know. Hi, The onco nurse told me to eat what I want. I guess their main concern is for you to be able to eat while on chemo. I do not like yogurt that much but found it somewhat appetizing while on chemo. I was also not a big fruit eater before diagnosis but has since increased daily fruit and vegetable servings in my diet. It seems to me that I liked cold food while on chemo. The strong aroma from hot food doesn't help with nausea. Good luck to you and be well. Lumpectomy 09/08, AC x 4 then Taxol x 12 10/08 through 03/09, Rads x 33 05/09 through 06/09 Tamoxifen beg 08/09

I would say eat what you can - I started off with an eating plan, which changed depending on how I was feeling or what my taste buds could handle (i.e. spicy and acidic not so well). I will say I was told to be careful at buffet's, open food bars, like at parties because you're not sure how long the food has been out, raw foods, such as fish, under cooked meats and salads at restaurants, because you don't know how well the vegetables have been cleaned. The link chainsawz listed is also a good place to go for infomation. Good luck.......... Diagnosis: 6/19/2009, IDC, 1cm, Stage IIIa, Grade 3, 4/15 nodes, mets, ER-/PR-, HER2- |

I was told to try and eat healthy of course, but really, to just eat what I could tolerate and/or liked. I quickly found that all the foods I normally liked, I cannot eat and things I would never eat are now somewhat appealing! Also, once I got a Rx mouthwash that had Lidocaine in it, I was able to eat more things (no pain) although my taste buds were still off. Lemon flavors taste good to me (water, yogurt, hard candy) and watermelon was just yummy! Mint flavors (tea, gum, candies, ice cream!) are also tasty to me now. I now crave salt on just about everything even though I never did before and I know I shouldn't add any to my food! Everyone is different in what works for them so it's really a matter of just trying several things until you find something you like! Good luck! TheNuevoMe

Fiesty - Not sure if your facility offers it, but mine had a chemo class in which they went over eating during chemo and handed out a small receipe book. And..... we are also given access to a nurtrionist to discuss and go over personal questions that weren't covered in class. You may want to check with your onc to see if they offer a class or access to a nutrionist that works with cancer patients. thanks jenn - no they don't offer that here. i am in an unusual situation working in myanmar when i found the lump and sent to bangkok where i have had my surgery and started chemo. facilities are wonderful but focused on the medical. i have asked the onc and also the chemo staff too, but the book is fantastic so am using that heavily. thanks and warm wishes http://feistybluegeckofightsback.wordpress.com/
