I need some help-the vaginal dryness is really tough--- I have been using replens, ky jelly and astroglide--someone recommended coconut oil--so I went to whole foods and got a jar of something that said it was coconut oil--- white, in a jar.... has anyone used this? Or anything else that helps??????
also, I am doing 1000ius of vit d daily- but I see that some are doing 2000 iu--does this help with your joint pain and possibly sexual desire???

I'm so prone to infections since chemo/menopause (both vaginal and bladder/UTI )that I have to be very careful what I use. I usually have coconut oil on hand and use it for cooking and some skin applications but I personally wouldn't use it 'down there'. I have tried replens and the like and the absolute only things that has helped me is estrogen and yes, I'm hormone positive but my GYN feels strongly it is fine and my onc has no problem with my use of non-systemic estrogen. I do take tamoxifen daily. My quality of life is so much better now. I take 4-6000 IUs of Vitamin D and sometimes my dr gives me the weekly 50,000 IUs and I still test too low. I think Vit D helps with many, many things but haven't heard anything about desire. I believe decent vitamin d levels does help with pain in general. Bay thanks so much for responding-- I am going to ask for an increase in vitamin d---- I am on femara and lupron--- I have been reluctant to re-introduce estrogen yet-- I have only been on the drugs since july---- I have been using glucosamine and exercise to help with the joint stiffness and it has been pretty good--- but the dryness is still an issue..... is there a specific type that you are using? I want to be able to ask at my next appointment. thanks again Diagnosis: 10/29/2008, ILC, 2cm, Stage II, Grade 2, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Byyyy: Thanks for the information on vaginal estrogen: I have been hesitant, but will use it in the future, because doctors seem to concur (for once!) that non-systemic estrogen is no problem at all. Beside, I have always wondered about those treatments aiming to block estrogen. There is a discussion somewhere here about that: if, indeed, estrogen is the problem, how come the overwhelming majority of women come down with GYN cancers around or after menopause, when it is depleted? That question has not been answered yet, of course......l Courage!

Bayyy, Is that estrogen creme for down below? Before I was diagnosed with BC I have used that as well as testosterone creme, both precribed by my gyno. The testosterone creme was compounded at the pharmacy, and I think it was bio identical plant based hormonal creme. But I've been wanting to ask my gyno if I can safely use them now. Shanagirl

I've tried the coconut oil (yes, the white jar) - a litte messy as apply with fingers. I had lots of issues with burning and discomfort with the OTC moisturizers - - one brand really burned and very uncomfortable. The coconut turns to liquid really quick from body heat - - so insert quickly. I've had no issues, discomfort etc and it smells nice. I've also applied externally only Vitamin E oil - not internal. Shanagirl, when you used the testosterone cream, did it help with sex drive and/or orgasmic ability? These are the problems I'm dealing with because of menopause and possibly due to tamoxifen influence as well, and from what I've been reading, testosterone may be what I'm missing. I also had a prescription for estrogen cream before the breast cancer diagnosis, which I've been using sparingly down below, as per my Onc's instructions, but I'm running out, so will attempt to get it renewed soon from my Gyn. As for the Vitamin D, I recently was at a conference where they promoted the idea of everybody needing to get their Vit D. levels tested, because it is preventative of breast cancer and also that it helps our bodies to make our sex hormones. In the USA, do you have Palmers' coacoa Butter formula with Vit E moisturising body oil? You can use this in shower or bath and it is a very nice and inexpensive moisturiser. Also very nice for Southern regions! keeps things as they shouldbe, and I reckon the body sort of memorises this and is more cheerful. Sounds bats but still........ rgiuff, Yes the testosterone creme does help with libido. It makes you more supple down there. I've noticed that without estrogen in my system, sex is painful because even with ky, astroglide, and replens the lubrication doesn't seem to be enough because the skin actually thins down below which is what adds to the discomfort. This is such a hard adjustment because my husband and I have always had great sex and lots of orgasms. Since memopause and mastectomy that's not as easy anymore. Unless of course he uses the little motion toy on me. Shanagirl

My gyn recommended the coconut oil. Yes, it is messy. But when I just was there for a checkup and complained about the mess, she gave me a "plunger" like you use for monostat. It helps get it in before it melts! I really don't want to try the estrogen cremes until I am a few more years out. Terry :)

Ahh.... I never considered a plunger when I purchase the jar. After a shower, while on the toilet - I basically took a scoop with my fingers and shaped as it melts quickly - - - then insert like you would a tampon. Granted you are using your fingers and then smear external to soften skin area. I do immediately before bed to lie down. I guess I'm not very creative --- my goal was to stuff the turkey. (It does liquify very quickly when you handle with fingers.) ![]() "Don't let fear of tomorrow rob you of the joy of today."

OK, does this stuff leak out when you are up and walking around? I'm so tired of products that do that, as if the tamoxifen induced vaginal discharge weren't bad enough! Also, what exactly does this coconut oil do- with regular use- will it restore the shriveled up tissues down there? Or is it just a temporary lubricant, good for the moment? RoseG

Thank you so much for this tip... I am set for hyst/bso on Dec 2. This is one thing I worry about so much because I remember just how painful things were when I was menopausal during chemo. I am banking on the coconut oil... I actually have some in the house! I bought it to use for cooking shortly after I had my last baby... I remember well because they had an aisle display set up and since I had the baby in the car seat in the shopping cart, I did not see the display. Needless to say, I ran into it and probably broke 20 jars of (not very cheap) coconut oil right in the middle of Whole Foods! OOPS Not that that has anything to do with anything here... LOL... don't know where I was going with that!Diagnosis: 4/21/2005, IDC, 3cm, Stage IIb, Grade 3, 0/12 nodes, ER-/PR-, HER2- |

This discussion sure grabbed my attention. I've been using Replens...with so-so results. Like many of you, I'm wanting to try anything/everything before I consider using a vaginal estrogen. Back to the coconut oil.....cp418, how often do you use this? Every night? Is it like Replens in that it actually moisterizes the vaginal tissues? Or is it used as a lubricant during sexual intercourse? Heading out in search of coconut oil..................... Diagnosis: 4/22/2009, IDC, <1cm, Stage I, Grade 3, 0/5 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

hi. Coconut oil has worked good for me. I buy a jar and then separate into smaller containers and pop into the freezer. And then use one at a time. It seems to help if I use it daily. I use the organic kind. It's cheap. Starts as a solid and melts as another post said. Also good for general massage. I didn't have any success with commercial products. Best wishes, Wendy blessings and love to all my sisters here!
