I am really looking into the vitamin D thing. I read on here somewhere (that's my most oft used word..somewhere..) that low vitamin D is common to just about ALL cancer patients. I had also read that the RDI, rather than the current 200iu should be closer to 2000iu. I've upped my intake and will be talking to my onc about it next Monday. Interesting topic. Go hard or go home :)

When I first had my Vit. D levels checked I had a number of 32. I increased my Vit. D supplementation to 4000 i.u. a day (a 2000 i.u. capsule in the a.m. and a 2000 i.u. capsule in the p.m.) When I had my Vit. D level checked this past February it was up to 62. MUCH better. I have been prescribed 90 day supply at one pill per week of 50,000 i.u. based on my blood leverl at 23.7 and they plan to retest vit d level in 90 days. Also, my mail order supplier called me today to tell me that my plan does not cover this prescription. Now I will have to have another prescription written to take to a drug store, delaying the time I can take my first dose. pkb143: I like you are finding out that this Vit D level is far more important than I thought, especially to cancer patients. Mary Jo: You were wise to check your level and then treat it and follow up to your current level of 62. Wonder why Ive never been told the importance of my level over my lifetime. Not a difficult test that should be done at each blood draw. Are they just finding out its importance or did they drop the ball. Most Vitamin D3 levels here is the States are reported in nanograms/millilter or ng/ml. In Europe most are reported in nanamols/liter or nmol/L. Here is the conversion: To convert Vitamin D3, it is 1 ng/ml = 2.5 nmol/L. The lower limit of acceptable Vitamin D is 30 ng/ml, but many feel up to 60 ng/ml is advisable. Below 30 ng/ml, one is is in the suboptimal range, especially below 20 ng/ml. Make sure you buy Vitamin D3, the cholecalciferol product as listed in the ingridients. Vitamin d2 is plant derived vitamin D and not desirable. We should start a thread on which Vit D3 people buy and why. They are not all the same w.r.t. fillers, taste and price as I've discovered. Good luck. It's great you got it tested. Tender It cannot be emphasized too strongly that treatment of each patient is a highly individualized matter. Guys, I would kill for your LOW D3 numbers. When I go off 50,000 IUs per month, I go down to 5. My doctor cheers when I get into the 20s. Tender: I found your post interesting, however I just filled a prescription for 50,000 i.u. and I asked the pharmasists if it is D2 or D3. He checked the bottle and said it is D2. I plan to take one pill a week and then re-check my Vit D level to see any improvement. I read lots of opinions on the Web and most of them leave me confused. Why does everything connected to breast cancer have to be so difficult? Frustrated, Cathey Diagnosis: 5/29/2009, IDC, <1cm, Stage I, Grade 2, 0/2 nodes, ER+ |
