I finished chemo in November and started on Tamoxifen in December. By February a was having  problems with my eyes. Went to an eye doctor (who I have a yearly exam with so they had a baseline) and they found bilateral beginning cataracts(that was not there the year before). Well just returned from another check-up and the eye doctor told me that the cataracts have progressed and I will need to have surgery in the near future (I am 56 years old). She saids it most likely due to the combination of getting chemo and tamoxifen. I felt young before I got the breast cancer now I feel like an old lady.

Dx 06/2008, ILC 3.8 cm, Stage 2A, ER pos/PR pos, Her2 -,SNB with isolated tumor cell, 07/08 bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction and port inserted, 4 cycles of chemo TC x2 then AC x2 from 08/27-10/29/08, started on Tamoxifen

I am so sorry to hear you got cataracts while on tamoxifen.  I have been concerend about my eyes and everything else as well.  Just started Tamox today, am 44 years old and have high IOP in both eyes which makes me a glaucoma suspect.  This plus the fact that I live in Miami and the sun is not good for cataracts, makes me worry alot!!!  I know what you mean about feeling old, when I started needing reading glasses and the gluacoma suspect thing came into play, it was hard not to "focus" - no pun intened, on anything else.  Well, I hope your cataract surgery goes well.  Thank goodness that there is a treatment for them.  No surgery is ever wanted, but this breast cancer journey is a twisty road.  Please let me know of your progress.

Mimi

I'm in the same boat and I'm 47.  I've been on tamoxifen for almost five years and it seems like it kicked in the cataracts and then the development slowed down, so I'm still not at the surgery point.  I've had so many eye issues over the years that this doesn't bother me.  The good years I've had on tamoxifen have made it worthwhile.

I talked withe oncolgy NP and she said that some women did develop cataracts with Tamoxifen and if they progressed I would have to have cataract surgery.
