Hi, I'm fairly new to taking Tamoxifen.  It's been a slightly bumpy road these past 2 weeks since I started taking it.  It's a five-year commitment and some people have adjusted nicely.  I am hoping to be one of those people soon.  I'm hoping anyone with experience can make suggestions about SE's.  Or, if you're a newbie and found a way to deal with some of the SE's, would love to hear it.  I don't want to take other prescription drugs to handle them.

Here's some of my SE's:  Insomnia is the biggest challenge so far, intermittent headaches, thirst, vivid nightmares just started this week - and every so often, my eyesight seems a little bit wonky.  I used to take the pill just before bed, but now taking around 8 pm.  It hasn't helped.

Any suggestions would be welcome or please share your experiences - thanks!

Thanks for the thumbs up on Ambien, DeeLew. I realised I had some here and took half a one last night. I've read so much stuff about people sleepwalking whilst on Ambien that I was a bit nervous, but had about 6 hours sleep and no hangover.

The problem with getting up is that it's Winter where I am in Australia now. I have a wood burner but that dies down overnight and the house is freezing!

I have been on tamoxifen for 16 months now. Mild hot flashes and severe bloating are my only symptoms.

Does anyone on this board have severe stomach bloating. It is so bad that my teen girls say I look pregnant. My mother constantly tells me to lose weight, like I want to look like this. This is really upsetting me, not only appearance wise but I feel like I cannot breath since the bloating is higher up. Exercise and diet doesn't seem to help. Can't take it anymore!!!

gerrib, I'm glad you got a little sleep. One little bit of advice: make sure you are ready to lie down as soon as you take the ambien. I found that out the hard way. I took it one night and decided to finish loading the dishwasher. Within a few minutes I was stumbling around like a drunk person and my SO told me I was talking crazy. LOL It really does help me though and even on the days when I have to get up super early I don't feel terribly groggy.

Good morning!  New to this thread.  Just started Tamoxifen 10 days ago.  From reading some (but not all!) of these pages it looks like it's too early for real SEs, and so far I feel pretty good.  Still struggling with hot flashes left over from chemo, so my MO gave me a low dose of Effexor (started that the same day as Tamoxifen).  My chemo exhaustion and neuropathy is all but gone (25 days PFC) and I feel like a rock star again, so I'm praying for few SEs from Tami because I *need* this energy back!  But - today is my fifth of 30 rads, so I expect that'll change pretty soon.  I am having trouble getting to and staying asleep; don't know if it's because of rads or Tami.  Thanks for the wealth of information on this thread - not looking forward to the next five years if it's going to be too difficult!

I take my Tami as early in the a.m. as possible.  Right now (9:00 pm) I'm wanting to get ready for bed but feel so stinking restless that I can't imagine laying down.  This has been happening every night for the last week.  I lay in bed and end up turning over and over for an hour - then, suddenly, I'm apparently asleep.  :-)  I finally broke down and took half a pill so I could get to sleep easier.

Is anyone else having this "restless body" thing?  Bad enough my soul feels so restless lately...

Welcome Nancy

I have that restlessness in bed. I think it is T as I didn't have it before. Last night I wore a mask following someone heres recommendation and was surprised that I slept until 5.30 am which is a record as I have been waking at 2.30 am. I can never sleep in now.

I have been on it for 3 months now and have started having occasional dizzy spells with mild nausea. I've seen others say they have this too.

Still no hot flashes so that's something to be pleased about.

Can't remember if it is this thread or not so ... I went to a information session last week put on by my cancer center ... The topic was stress/anxiety. One of the things discussed was sleep. She talked about "sleep hygiene".
She gave some good ideas - like if you are in bed and cannot sleep in the first 15 minutes then get up and go to a different room and read. Do this until tired. Bedrooms are for sleeping or sex - not tv or reading.

I also have noticed headaches starting to crop up more frequently. As well as an impaired ability to regulate body temperature. I have always been very good in the heat, but not anymore. I have trouble staying hydrated in the AZ heat.

I am taking Celexa for the hot flashes and depression and take .5mg of Ativan most nights. It's the only way I can get more than 3-4 hours of sleep. I can fall asleep, but end up waking up and tossing and turning after a couple hours. Makes it hard to know if the fatigue is from T, post-treatment stuff, the Celexa......all I know is I am tired!

I do find myself wondering how I will get through 4-1/2 more years of this......

I'm catching up on this forum...I also have the bloating that many are mentioning and it's so frustrating! I've been on Tamox for almost 10 months now and the bloating happens daily and it looks like I'm five months pregnant by late afternoon:(

On another note, some of you may remember me complaining about really severe joint pain that started within one month of Tamox-shoulder, hip and back. Well, after a LOT of workup it appears that the Tamox is not to blame and the timing was coincidental. Instead, the doctors now believe that chemo either caused vs. instigated/uncovered an autoimmune disorder, Rheumatoid Arthritis. I'm certainly glad to know what's causing all the pain but now I'm stuck with a chronic problem. The interesting thing to me is that RA is an immune system breakdown which is worrisome. My immune system doesn't seem to be doing a very good job and that makes me wonder if I'm more at risk for recurrence. Anyway, the good news for everyone here is that the Tamox did NOT cause this severe joint pain. However, if any of you have something similar and went through chemo, see a rheumatologist and get tested for RA.
