What Anti-inflammatory supplements and to reduce cholesterol levels do you prefer?

I had some bloodwork done not to long ago that show elevated cholesterol, CRP and Fibrinogen levels - - all out of range HIGH.  Yes, all high risk for a cardio event especially with strong family hx of heart dx and strokes.  I'm a Ticking time bomb here and I'm sure mostly caused by 5 yrs on Femara.  Don't drink, smoke, not obsese or over weight and exercise regular.  Conservative diet no red meat in past 6 years, minimal dairy to no dairy, organic poultry, wild seafood, organic veggies, fruit, minimal bread, lots of EVOO and salads, oatmeal. etc.  Not much more that I can do with life style changes???  Also, I take obvious supplements for Ca, Mg, Vit D, Vit C, Curcumin, Omega 3, CoQ10, Glucosamine, acetyl L Carnitine, a few others.  Drink lots of green tea my favorite.

(Note - Oncologist wants me to stay on Femara a few more years but I need to get these abnormal labs under control.)  I do not want to be placed on any statins.  Wondered about Red Yeast Rice, more Vitamin C, etc.  Read warning about taking Bromelain for individuals taking daily Aspirin which I do already.  I've an appt with my Nutritionist and have a few questions to ask regarding supplement changes.  I just wondered if anyone else has some additional ideas that would be helpful to discuss during my appt.

cp418,

When my Rad. Onc. told me that,  I mentioned that Pepsid AC was for heartburn and she said it was a type of antihistamine and it made the Claritin work better.

She told me (this was about 4 yrs. ago) that there was a study done on it and she was prescribing it for women that had a rash similar to mine. It sure did help with it.

I have read that there is some thought that Claritin can help with the stomach and joint issues that women on an AI have......

I don't understand it either --- just know it helps me.

cp418,

I tried taking Glucosamine for my joints (knees and shoulder pain) and it had a negative effect on me. I don't know specifically that it affected my cholesterol but I would gain weight and have the same fatigue I associate with a high-sugar, high-refined carb diet. I thought I recalled something about cholesterol in what I read about glucosamine but I'm not finding much to substantiate that glucosamine will affect cholesterol levels, just a LOT of articles saying that "There may be a small group of people whose lousy cholesterol rises when they take glucosamine, but the majority do not have this adverse effect" ...hope this helps

Very interesting about the Glucosamine to Cholesterol relationship as I do have that MTHFR mutation which may be influenced by it.  Thanks for that information, very very helpful as I had been taking a glucosamine supplement the past year.  My Cholesterol LDL kept going up on each lab report with conservative diet and exercise.  Yes, I hear you Smile so I try to be practical about these supplements.  One can get carried away consuming so many  - - moderation is the way to go IMO.

wait.... so I have to eat a WHOLE dark chocolate bar? 100 grams is a bit over 3 ozs daily? my calorie intake does not currently allow for that volume. what to do... something's gotta give and it won't be the chocolate. Cool

There are some other chocolate bars too - - I simply tried them for taste.  I feel I've already given up so much in my diet to eat healthy - -no red meat in the past 6 years, minimal dairy which is fine with lactose intolerance, no junk foods, no wine or any alcohol, etc.  Sometimes I just want to be "normal" again........ I have more concerns over the toxins in household and cosmetic products with parabens, benzenes, and breathing them or absorbing via sunscreen or shampoos, produce that is not organic sprayed with pesticides, chemical fertilizers.  I figure some flax seeds are lower priority with phytoestrogens.  I feel artifical hormones are more dangerous than those from plants - - but maybe I'm wrong.  The majority of green plalnts you eat do contain some level of phytoestrogens BUT don't quote me as my brain is over whelmed at times with all these details!

I know that the subject of Soy and Flax is very controversial.....but for what it is worth my Dr. told me to avoid as much as possible of both.

I read the ings. list and if either is at the top I avoid it. If it is near the bottom, especially Soy, I go ahead and eat it.

Flax is much easier to avoid than soy.

I had never heard of the claritin/pepcid ac combo.  That is really interesting.

I can't take Niacin because of having liver damage in the 90's from a pain pill. Liver is good now but Dr. doesn't want to chance the Niacin. Can't take the cholest. meds either....

I had to stop the garlic...gave me cramps and gas.... and this brand was not supposed to do that because it dissolves in the bowel.

I am back to just trying to lose weight and move more.

Getting very disgusted with the whole process!  HDL is really good..... but they say that doesn't matter as much as they thought it did!

Purple,

I don't know if they have said that an AI will raise cholesterol, but I know this... I NEVER had high cholesterol or high BP until I was on Arimidex for about 6 months. I've been off Arimidex for 3 years this May. My BP has gotten better and I only take half as much BP meds.... HDL has gotten better, but the LDL and Total is still high. Trig. are great!

Revellsk,

I don't take Metamucil but I do eat a lot of fiber and so far it has not helped all that much. I eat oatmeal and oat bran, lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains, etc.  I can't take Metamucil because I have spastic colon.

Question about cheeses..... Is Swiss cheese all that bad for cholesterol? Love it ... but can do without if it is really bad.

cp418,

You and me both! I see people jog past my house and it makes me tired. The only exercise I can do is walk and not a whole lot of that at one time. I do all my own housework and have stairs so that is a little benefit.

I have the Lebed exercises CD but can't do all of it because of joint problems.

I finally lost one pound and that took over three weeks! I'm just hoping the Omega 3, vit. D, B complex, and trying to eat right gets the cholesterol down. (Had to stop the Garlic pill- made me sick)  Cholesterol  is my main problem... otherwise I wouldn't try to lose weight. I'm not that much over weight, but Dr. says losing will lower the cholesterol, since I'm not able to take the meds. I have no other risk factors - no family history of heart problems, don't smoke, don't drink, AND NEVER HAD HIGH CHOLESTEROL until after the first 6 months of Arimidex.

So...... If that is what caused it to be elevated..... do you have it forever and if not how long after stopping Arimidex until it goes down?

Anyone have an answer to that?
