Finally finished 6 rounds of taxotere...and the doctor says thats it! He does not want to put me on anything else now and let nature take its course. I am very very scared and asking your opinion if you have been put on anything straight after Taxotere. How long after can the cancer return?  I must say, the Taxotere did wonders and  I have not been in pain since I started...and I don't want to go backwards. Please advise.

your lucky.  i've been on it for about 7 treatments and have to stay on it until it stops working. Then they will try something else.  Its not working very well.  I'm in pain right now and can't sleep. Maybe its stopped working for me.  I don't think anyone knows how long before cancer progresses or returns so to speak.  Its all a roll of the dice.

Hi Tania,

Are you ER or HER2 positive?  If so, it would be more common to start with a hormone treatment once you've finished with the chemo.  I did 4 cycles of taxotere which stabilised my disease, then had 3 months chemo break in order to have a mastectomy, then was given tamoxifen as hormone treatment.  My disease was stable for almost 2 years this way.  It might be worth getting a second opinion by the sounds of things.

Good luck!

I had 6 treatments, responded great. I have been off of it for 7 months. Waiting to here about where I sit from my last scan.

I continued with herceptin and zometa and aromasin.

Enjoy your break. I hope it lasts a life time!

Have you been scanned, and if so, what were the results? If stable or ned, then no further treatment at the moment would be necessary. But if the mets are still progressing, then clearly you need more chemo. Perhaps if you gave us some more info, we could advise accordingly?

tania, that is so very little information for one of us to compare our experience with yours.  Where are your mets, what is your endocrine status?  How long since you had the original cancer, or were you dx with mets at the outset?  Taxotere is a tough drug, but I can't remember hearing of it being used alone, certainly I could be wrong.  I had it with carboplatin January through April 2008, and it was tough but the combination gave me nine months of NED, and I still have not restarted chemo.  I have had other mets, though, and been treated with radiation, zometa, and gamma knife for a brain met.

Sorry for so little information. Ok here it goes, Diagnosed secondary bone mets 2 1/2  years ago. Been on Femara (did not do a thing), then on the dreaded Xeloda (which made things worse).  Hormone positive tumour to begin with.  So, with all the pain in the world I went on Taxotere and nothing else.  Herceptin is not for my type of tumour.  Now I have had 6 rounds and the doctor will not do anything else and watch what hapapens.  Initially (10 years ago) diagnosed with breast cancer and was on tamoxifan for 5 years which did the job until it came back.  Only mets to the bones.  I take Zometa every 3 months.

Taxotere did the trick for me the first time out.   I was originally dx with bone and liver mets and did 6 cycles of Taxotere/carboplatin/Herceptin/Zometa.    I still do the Herceptin/Zometa.  However, after 3 cycles they did a scan and not only was I free but all the bone mets healed too!!  I have stayed NED for over a year now.   I do Aredia (like Zometa) every 6 weeks still.    I think the Zometa will keep your bones mets in check.    Ask your onc how often he will do scans for you to make sure there is no progression.

Lots of people do well with bones mets for many many years.
