Hi ladies,
I ve been under the BC treatment since 2004 , and bone met. treatment for last 2.5 years and livermet tret.for last 2 months.( on Gemzar+ Zometta so far) I ve been some breathing trouble for some period, but last week its been worst, and yesterday last minutes, my lungs has been checked by CT. so found fluid in/ around( Im not sure in or around my lungs)my left lung. And there was no time to discuss with my onc about it, because of 3 days holiday.
So, my question is, whats it? whats the couse? Can be treatetable, if yes how ?
I search internet, I think need to remove fluid from my lung. Any idea if it does work and how long lasting ?
Im sorry have lots of question, but if anyone had same experience to share with me, Ill be appricated.
Have a great July 4 and weekennd to all of us..

This happened to me about 18 month ago. They drained a few litres of fluid off, and the relief was immediate. To stop it happening again, I had a talc pleurodosis, which seals the cavity between lungs and pleura, therby making it more difficult for the fluid to build up again. Since then, I've had no further build up of fluid. Dx 11/4/2007, 5cm, Stage IV, Grade 3, ER-/PR-, HER2+ |

The day I ended up in the ER with shortness of breath is the day they found the reocurrence mass to my chest and the cat scan also found a right plerual effusion or build up of fluid just under the rt lung ( not in it) that was pushing up on the lung making it harder to breathe. So that day they did a thoracentecis to remove the fluid and it was not bad at all. They sit you up, numb the area with lidocaine injections--not bad, then remove it. The first time they took out I think 850cc and in 3 weeks I had to have a total of I believe 5 of these procedures. but each time your breathing is suddenly improved. Later cat scans have found "small" effusions but nothing that caused me problems and no further procedures were needed for that. Pat

I had this yesterday. I had been having shortness of breath for a while, and a small PE was found on my routine scan a month ago. It was getting worse, though, and I had another CT on Tuesday. So yesterday I had a little over two liters drained. What relief! And not bad at all. I hope you can get in on Monday and have this done, you will be amazed at the relief. By the way, it's very, very common! And the fluid is not actually IN your lung, but in the pleural space, between the lung and the sack that it is in. Can I clarify a little----There is : pleural effusion which is fluid up in the pleural space (around the lungs) that is pretty easily removed. Then there is a pulmonary embolism (otherwise known as a PE) that can be a lot more lethal if not found and corrected. It's a blood clot in the lungs. Analemma, sounds like you had an effusion rather than a PE or did you have both? Anyway it sure wasn't small by any means......over 2 liters!! I bet you could breathe better! The most they ever took out of me was 850cc and at that point I was really short of breath so I can't imagine 2 liters. Glad you got relief. Pat

That's great gngn!! Good for you! I was given a prescription for furosemide (lasix) tablets when I had swelling to my ankles but never thought it would be used for effusions but it makes sense if it was a small amount of fluid. Do you know his estimate on how big or small the effusion was?? I know I've had fluid build-ups since I get a little short of breath and actually hear gurgling in my lower lung area when I deep breathe, heck next time I'm going to take a 20mg lasix and see if it helps.
