Has anyone else dealt with mets to the spleen? I got my CT scan/bone scan results, and the onc called me with just the preliminary results because he didn't want to have me worry all weekend long. He said the bone lesion seemed stable (yay!) but that there was a "concerning" spot on my spleen. I had been having weeks of pressure under my left lower rib, which was worse with chemo, but I figured it was gas and constipation. I looked up where the spleen is, and it's right in that area. So I'm bummed. But I've never heard of mets to the spleen. I guess I should count myself lucky that they could just remove it? Or would they?! I'd prefer to keep my organs, but if that's what would keep me from being NED, I'd happily have it removed!

I'm not sure they would remove your spleen but it is something they would need to watch.  Do you have lobular mets?  In lobular it is typically seen to have mets in the abdominal area.

I had pain and pressure in the same areas that you are describing...mostly in upper left quadrant of the abdomen.  Also, pain and bloating that I thought was being caused by xeloda.  In my case it was mets to the peritoneum which is the outter lining of the organs in the abdominal cavity,  I have had two rounds of Doxil and pain has decreased noticably.  I have IDC and just bone mets until the last scan which showed these.  Onc said that it is not too common...maybe 5 to 10% of BC patients have these types of  mets but that they are just as treatable as mets to any other organ.  Best of luck with your treatments!

Hello

Well i just got a preliminary ultrasound done and he too said there is a spot of concern on the spleen

and a right overy cyst. I know with BC the radioligist are extra careful, but i still freaked out, since by bone scan, bone marrow testing, and lung were clean

What did u find out that mets to the spleen is. I had bone marrow testing  for chronic bank pain to rule out leukiemia etc,  and that was clear, so maybe i should just relax till i meet with my onc.

The ovary..well i dont know if they can determine, what type it appears, i need to see the report but i gather it wasnt a floating functional cyst or else?

Anyhow any info u can share with your experience will be helpful .. tests done , thinking.. etc

Well, turned out that the spleen didn't show up on the pet scan. Apparently it was a false alarm, so hopefully it will be for you, too. Ovarian cysts are usually just that, cysts, so I wouldn't be worried about it. It's just a pain if you have to have them removed. For some reason, on Tamoxifen my body produced a zillion cysts, some of them the size of grapefruits. I had 2 or 3 operations to have them removed, and they were all benign. The doctor should be able to tell you if they look like plain cysts or if they are more concerning. If the doctor won't tell you, get the copy of the report and it should say.

Hi Mumyan

I jsut noticed u were from toronto. Well so am I . I got the abdominal ultrasound

The thing is the oncologists dont see the ultrasound just the report, and the radioligist who reads it is concerned, even if med onc isnt because they need to report evrything i guess. Ihad theis ultrasound done at mount sinai, but treatemtn at pmh.

How to you proceed .. do u still have a spot on your spleen? Was it a cyst? Did the oncoloist think the ovarian cysts needed to come out?

i will know more later today. thanks..

what hopsital are u at.

I am actually in Whitby so I have been treated here at the cancer centre in Oshawa. He said the spot was an old cyst that probably had been there for years. My uterine fibroids totally disapeared after chemo. But I am on Tamox daily so my gyno wants to see me every 6 months to keep an eye on the ovaries.Really pleased with the treatment centre and the surgeon out here.
