I am intersted to know how many of you are in active treatment and are going to or have gotten the H1N1 vaccine--and why or why not.
I'll start:
currently on Gemzar/Zometa
Undecided
Am worried about the risks involved with the vaccine itself
----------------------------
Please note that all stages are welcome to answer. I am most interested in those who are in active tx right now, but all are welcome to participate!

Just thought I would chime in, I am currently on Tamox and I will get the H1N1 flu shot as well as the regular flu. I work in a 4K classroom and that plays into my decision, but I also noticed that after chemo I seem to get more upper resp. infections. I was hardly ever sick before bc. I brought this up to my onco., but he said it is more likely my job and my young kids that up my risk. I am in Wisconsin and as of Saturday the H1N1 was not available, but our clinic thinks maybe within the next two weeks. My husband on the other hand would rather take his chances. We will have to see how the whole thing plays out during the winter. Andrea

If the general consensus is minimal side effects? Why not? It's available to me. My son is 10, my twin girls are 9.......argh.......I'm still up in the air about it. I "think" their pediatrician said it would be available to them this week. My kids have always gotten the flu shot/mist they had this time with literally no SE's, sooooooooo.........I just don't know yet. Hubby and I had the flu ages ago, it's really not something I'd ever want to repeat, it's awful. Probably got it from my husband, who travels all over the world, and is probably a carrier of all sorts of disease. We would NOT get the H1N1 vaccine even if we were susceptible. I'm a hospital pharmacist, and have 'mild' lung fibrosis. My scleroderma doc recommended it. I probably will wait until all the people that are at highest risk (pregnant women, kids aged 2-24 with and without medical conditions) get theirs as I don't have as much patient contact as other health providers. I want to protect any possible transmission to my patients. My sclero doc said even people with lupus (I think they flare with 'the phase of the moon'?) don't flare with tetanus adjuvunct (?); she said there's no info that sclero patients react weirdly to immunizations. Peggy and I had this conversation on another thread... Hi, Peggy (waving). I'm currently on tamox. I have asthma and am on a daily steroid inhaler, singulair and zyrtec. I took the first swine flu shot in 1976 and had a bad reaction -- very high fever, hallucinations, trip to the ER. I haven't taken another one since -- I lose the "flu lottery" every five years (had it in February of this year, a little late). HOWEVER, H1N1 seems to be particularly bad for people with respiratory issues, and mine aren't mild. I'm going to take it when they offer it at my job, and stand by for a trip to the ER in case I react poorly. "Hit it with a sledgehammer until it submits or dies ...."

I finally got to say to my husband - THATS IT! Thats what chemo is like day two! Oh yeah baby, the light bulb went on. All four of us are on Tamiflu. Which is expensive! So now I guess none of us need a H1N1 shot since we have all been exposed? I am a little unclear on that. Treatment: Between rads and getting ready to begin Tamox. The H1N1 flumist live virus vaccine is supposed to be for people <50 who are not immuno-compromised or have respiratory issues. The injectable version will be available even later than that. Don't think I will get it, but reserve the right to change my mind. Took my mom to get her seasonal flu shot and at the last minute decided NOT to get that either. I have only gotten a flu shot once before in my life, so I am just following my normal path of not getting one. With the type of treatment I have undergone, my WBC count is not lowered, so I don't feel too vulnerable. The only factor that has changed is that I will have to be in various doctor's waiting rooms over the winter, so may have extra exposure there. Going to handwash hand sanitize like crazy and leave it at that. In my city, there was a shortage of seasonal flu vaccine, so maybe someone more vulnerable got my intended dose.
