Hi all:
For about a month now, my shoulder blade and spine have been itchy. It's kind of a phantom thing--there's nothing there but it itches. Sometimes it starts to burn and is sore to the touch, like sunburn but, again, if you look, there's nothing there to indicate something's going on.
I saw my oncologist on Tuesday - she's ordered a bone scan. She thinks it's a SE from the radiation I had 6 months ago in that area. Has anyone experienced this? My bones don't hurt and my usual standby meds (e.g. Advil) doesn't touch it. She's guessing it's nerve related and I should take gabapentin - how much? She's not sure.
I can't wear a bra anymore as it's right at the bra line. Only a hot water bottle helps. Which is weird because I would never have thought heat would help a burning pain.
I'm planning a visit to my radiation oncologist. In the meantime has anyone heard of this? If so, any suggestions? If there was a way to strap a hot water bottle to my back, I would. Unfortunately, I can't get through the day like this.
Cheryl.

I certainly have nerve pain which itches. But I wouldn't say that it originates in my bones-why do you feel it's a bony itch? (If that's not a silly question?!) I have the reverse-it responds to ice packs. I've also recently been prescribed anaesthetic patches, which really help. I'm on a very low dose of gabapenin-with assurances that it can be increases substantially if necessary. Have no idea if we're experiencing similair problems-as I certainly don't feel mine originates in the bones! Diagnosis: 11/4/2007, 5cm, Stage IV, Grade 3, ER+/PR-, HER2+ |

Hi Elaine: I have mets in my bones so I assumed that the nerve pain stemmed from there. So nerve pain does itch. Wow, I would have never figured that. I guess this is just one more SE to add to my long, laundry list. Cheryl - Mets dx Aug/06 (lungs, liver, bones, abdomen)

I got nerve damage from a car accident. Was very itchy as nerve grew back. Doctor told me nerves can continue to regenerate for a year or two and that the itching was a good sign. Diagnosis: 8/2007, IDC, 1cm, Stage IV, Grade 3, 1/1 nodes, mets, ER+/PR-, HER2- |

Cheryl, my onc thinks that the itching is caused by a tumour pressing on a nerve, rather than stemming from the tumour itself. He feels since it is being relieved by ice packs and TENS, that this seems to confirm it. I'd give gabapentin a try if you can, as we started that a few weeks ago, and it is helping to reduce the itch. I'm reluctant to increase the dosage as it can cause sleepiness. Nothing quite helps as much as a good, old scratch-even if the relief is only temporary!!! Diagnosis: 11/4/2007, 5cm, Stage IV, Grade 3, ER+/PR-, HER2+ |

Dear Cheryl, I found those air-activated heating pads to be helpful - I could have my husband position it on my back where it needed to be, and then I could put on my bra to hold it or tape it on. Not quite as warm as hot watter bottle, but worked pretty good for me. Hope you get some relief - Becky Becky, Stage IV, bone mets, ER+/PR+, HER2-, diagnosed June 2008, right mastectomy May 2009, 0/13 nodes

I had the same itchy feeling on my shoulder, but was told it was due to nerve damage when they removed the lymph nodes. My surgeon told me a lot of surgeons don't like to do lymph nodes for breast cancer because they're so wrapped around the nerves and such. He told me to expect a numb shoulder and underarm, which I have and doesn't bother me, but he also mentioned the phantom pain or itching that could come from the lymph node surgery. I can certainly feel the itching, but can't feel myself scratching! |
