When I was diagnosed in May, 2009 I was diagnosed with Bone & Liver Mets. The bone met biopsy was done as part of my surgery however the liver mets have not had a biopsy done. The drugs seem to be working well on my primary tumor, bone mets, and lowering my tumor markers but having minimal impact on the liver mets. My liver functions are all fine.
How many of you had a biopsy done on your liver mets?

I didn't have my liver biopsied. Like you my functions are fine. I'm on PARP trials at the moment-which is keping the mets in the pleura stable, but the liver mets have been increasing. Part of me is hoping that the liver will take longer to respond, but am not too confident taht this is the case! Diagnosis: 11/4/2007, 5cm, Stage IV, Grade 3, ER+/PR-, HER2+ |

I had the liver biopsied. It is the same as original BC. Not an hurtful procedure at all. Renee

When I progressed to Stage IV my oncologist ordered a bone biopsy to update my tumor profile. Unfortunately, no cancer cells were retrieved with the biopsy. When the cancer showed up in my liver, I had a liver biopsy. The cancer was the same type (ER+/PR+) as the original cancer in 1989. Also, we learned it is Her2- (that test was not done in 1989). The liver biopsy wasn't a big deal, I think they sedated me for it (I was in the hospital so was kind of in & out of it the whole time). I would want to know if you were HER positive in your liver, myself. 1998 Stage II 2 positive nodes, ER+/PR-/Her2-, 4XAC, Tamoxifen 5 yrs, Sept 2008 hip fracture, bone & liver mets, Doing well on Arimidex, Faslodex & Zometa. 08/2009 CT scan: slowly shrinking liver mets. I did not have a liver biopsy although when mets were first found in my lungs, I had a biopsy. I got the liver mets three years after the lung mets and they have responded to hormone therapy so I assume the hormone status is the same. It never occurred to me that the liver mets might be different than the lung mets. That is food for thought. dx Stage II primary BC in Jan. 2001;dx with DCIS on other breast in Jan. 2003; dx with mets to lungs in Jan. 2004 (What's up with me and January, anyway?)

I did have a liver biopsy to make sure that it was BC mets. That was confirmed and Gemzar and Herceptin put my liver into remission. Denise Diagnosis: 12/14/2002, IDC, 5cm, Stage IV, 4/40 nodes, mets, ER+/PR-, HER2+ |

Never had a liver biopsy -- it was too small and hard to reach when first dx-ed. Didn't bother to biopsy when mets came back. Hoping for remission on Gemzar, Herceptin and Zometa. Elizabeth's Mantra: When in doubt, eat cake. When you haven't a clue, add ice cream.

I hope this doesn't scare you and I think my case is very unusual, but I ended up needing two liver biopsies because they didn't get a good sample from the first one. They must have had an awful time getting to my mets because I woke up during the procedure in excruciating pain. After the procedure, I was still in pain, but went home and did my best to recover. Several hours later, I was still in a lot of pain and ended up going to the ER where I was admitted overnight and given strong pain meds. Apparently, some small percentage of patients have a bleed with the liver biposy and I was unlucky enough to be in that group. They repeated the biopsy two weeks later and it went much better. I made them promise to give me enough anesthesia to keep me comfortable, which they did. Stage 4 at age 40, mets to liver, lung, spine.

My first onc didn't want to do a biopsy, so I looked for a surgeon who did it all the time. He happened to be in PA! They put me completely out for it. He removed two lesions, so he got plenty of cancer cells!! It turned out to be ER/PR+ and HER2-, just like my BC. But there was some kind of powdery stuff there, too. So now the oncs and surgeons disagree over whether it is BC mets or a neuroendecrine carcinoma (could be from the liver itself). At any rate, I'm really glad I did the biopsy. That first doc thought it was an hemogemioma (sp?). He wanted to wait and see. Ruth Diagnosis: 11/12/2008, IDC, <1cm, Stage IV, Grade 3, 0/1 nodes, mets, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

I had a liver biospy in 06 when I was org dx with stage IIb. They found 2 lesions after the org ct scan and decided to do the biopsy, hurt like HELL!!!!! They didnt put me out and I cried thru the whole thing. It was horrible! It turned out Negative, and said they were hemotobias? (I surely misspelled that!) But when I was dx with liver mets this past August she didnt want to do another one. I thought it odd and still do. She said that the Pet scan showed that they were positive for cancer since they were glowing so brightly. I'm still not convienced however. Other things glow on a PET scan, too. My bunion (big toe) glowed! The brain glows. Anyway, my local oncs said mine was not cancer, even though it glowed brightly, and it was cancer. Each of us is different. This is just my story contribution. I'm really glad I had the biopsy because it showed the characteristics of the cancer in my liver as well. Thanks to you all for your feedback on my post. I have another scan scheduled mid December and if the mets are still unchanged the plan is to request a biopsy. The mets were present at diagnosis and no other tests were done beyond the CT scan. My biggest concern is to one actually confirm that they are BC mets and also get a pathology report on them to insure that they match the results from my primary tumor. Thanks again for your input Jill Diagnosis: 5/19/2009, Stage IV, Grade 2, mets, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Jill, I was in "twilight" for my biopsy . . . a needle biopsy, and it barely hurt at all. Afterward, I didn't even need a Motrin. If you want a biopsy -- get one. As the patient, get in the driver's seat. It's your right. Diagnosis: 9/9/2009, IDC, <1cm, Stage IV, 0/0 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

Hi to all, My mom has diagnosed with stage four with liver met last week, this is my first message to forum. I wanted to write here because i read many thing at here that are beneficial for me. I saw this title about liver biopsy and i thought this is time to pay back my earning. Maybe my answer is late for the person that asked the question but it may be beneficial for new readers. My mom also made a liver biopsy. It was very easy, it was done by an injector and with local anesthesy. We just stayed at hospital for 6 hours just in case, and then went home. But its easiness is related to where the tumor is as fas as i understood. The biopsy doctor told that, it was behind the liver, so it was so easy. I pray for patience and heal to god for all of us. |
