Hi there,

I am halfway through chemo, four AC, and one taxol so far, and then will have surgery, rads, and then herceptin.  Ive noticed most people now have herceptin with there chemo.  I have asked my onc and he said he doesnt want to take a break of the herceptin in between chemo and surgery.  Did anyone else have chemo, then surgery, then the year of herceptin?

Thanks,

Laura

Hi Laura,

I did not end up having the surgery due to the fact that they found more cancer and so now they will not do surgery to remove any cancer but yes that was what my physician was planning for me as well.  I think it is pretty normal from what I have found.  Have Chemo shrink the cancer, remove cancer and then prevent it from growing.

I was started on Herceptin with my A/C, but after I found out that you aren't supposed to do H with A, I asked them to wait on the herceptin. After chemo, they then also wanted to wait until after rads to restart the Herceptin.

I had pretty much the same diagnosis as you, slightly smaller tumour.  And I had the same treatment sequence.  When I got to the surgery the tumour had shrunk to almost nothing and in the surgeon's words "there was just a cancer graveyard".  I hope you have a similar result.

I had Herceptin with Taxol, everything worked out fine.  I just got tired from the Benedryl and the other drugs they gave me before the treatment.   On Sept. 10th, four weeks after I finished chemo. I'm having surgery, then radiation and then back on Herceptin--once every three weeks for a year..

Hi Laura

My treatment scheme is similar to yours. I had 4 cycles of Taxotere + AC, then surgery, then chemo again (5 cycles), and will start Herceptin only after I finish chemo. AC and Herceptin are not administered together, due to increased cardiovascular risk. This is something I've learned from this forum Smile. My doctor never bothered to explain.

I had a similar course of treatment (chemo, surgery and rad) but I did receive Herceptin weekly with my Taxol. I did that for 12 weeks. My bi-lat was 1 week ago today. My tumor had shrunk considerably. Hope to have the path report tomorrow. Really hoping it is a cancer graveyard like MKE's surgeon mentioned. I start back on Taxol every three weeks soon and will receive that until at least June of 2009.

Thanks everyone, I printed out some stuff to show my Dr, it still seems like most people get herceptin with the taxol, but then my tumor has shrank so much I can find it anymore, so maybe I shouldnt worry too much about it.  I go for my 2nd taxol today, with two more to go.
