I'm new here, and have been fretting for a couple of weeks about something. Haven't been able to find anything useful in my medical books or online, so I'm glad to have found this forum.
I am 40 years old, and about 2 weeks ago began experiencing a stabbing, intermittent pain in one breast. It does not seem to be related to my cycle. At first, I could not feel any lumps, but this morning there seems to be one (?) I'm not sure, though.....(maybe I'm being a hypochondriac, you know?)
When doing self-exams over the years, I've had a hard time figuring out what's a "lump" and what's just normal breast "texture" (or whatever you'd call it). My doctor has never considered anything I have to be a lump.
I had a mammogram about 3 months ago, which was clear.
From what I've read, breast pain is not usually a symptom of cancer, but I wonder what else it could be? Has anyone experienced this? Am I making something out of nothing?
Thanks!

Elliemae- from what you are describing it sounds like fibrocystic changes. I am by no means anything close to an expert. I too have had shooting pains, and now lumps which I had an ultrasound for, and then Monday went in for an MRI, which I am waiting for the results on. They told me they are 98% certain it is nothing. I hope you go to the doctor, hypochondriac or not, you don't want to take a chance with BC. I am sure it is nothing, but better safe then sorry. PS I know what you mean about trying to figure out the difference between lumps and just normal breast tissue. |

Well, bc can hurt, but the pain I had from my tumor was much different than any sort of breast pain I'd ever had before. It felt like a pulled muscle over my rib, and lo and behold, my tumor was growing into my pectoralis muscle. So that explained the pain in my case. So that sounds different than what you're describing. However, I want to point out, not to scare you, but to just state, that mammograms don't pick up all breast cancers. My mammo the year before my diagnosis was "fine". In fairness, I am young, have dense breasts and a subtype of bc (ILC) that doesn't image well on mammo. However, my mom had her bc missed on mammo repeatedly, was not young, did not have dense breasts, and had a very large IDC tumor that should have been caught. On both my mammo films and hers, when the docs go back to look now that they know where the tumors were, they can see them on the mammos. As one onc told us, "Mammo reading is an art, not a science." All that being said, the odds are in your favor that everything is fine. However, if you do find a lump that you are concerned about, then go to a breast surgeon. They can tell quite a bit just by feel, and if there's a concern, can do an ultrasound and a diagnostic mammogram. hi elliemae, when i went to the doc i went with a discharge leaking from my left breast. it wasn't painful, but it was a funny colour and so it was best to get it checked out. i do self exams once a month and never found anything, but when the doc examined me, she found a lump, 12 o'clock on my breast. i am now awaiting a biop/scan/mammo and the wait is killing me. i have a date for the 15th (which was the 1st until my employers made me change it) and i've almost chewed my fingernails down to the knuckles! whenever you get the chace, get to the docs, even if it is just to put your mind at rest and get some answers. even if there is no lump, all breast pain should be checked out as a matter of urgency. even if you have had a clear mammo, if your still not satisfied, go back and kick, scream, shout, rant, and rave until you are if that's what it takes. as another thought, my mother suffered from breast pain and like you had no lump. when she went to the docs, she was found to be suffering from mastitis. for this she was put on antibiotics and evening primrose oil capsules. you shouldn't have to suffer, you still need to get rid of the pain, keep posting to let us know how you are thinking of you purple |

This may or may not help, but a lot of my female friends and colleagues (most in their 40s - 60s) have what they call "stabbing pains" in their breasts. I know that one at least has been told it's due to normal changes in the tissue that occurs over time (read: as one gets older). Whether that's true or not, I cannot say. All I know is that it's not uncommon; nor is it necessarily a sign of somthing bad. But, as always, it's best to get it checked out. Annie |

Hi: I agree with Heather. However, if there is a lump you must get a biopsy ASAP. Do you notice anything else that's different about that breast as swelling, heat, different color than the other--particularly in nipple area? Ever have pain in the related armpit? Not playing Doctor, but curious. Many Hugs and hope all goes well for you. Erika |

Wow--thank you for the quick responses. I really appreciate it. This is the first time I've ever noticed anything "off" in this area, so that's why it's been freaking me out a bit. I am calling the Dr. for an appointment as soon as I log off of here. Better to be cautious than to do nothing and regret it later. Thanks, Ellie |

Hi Elliemae, I'm in exactly the same situation as you are, with only difference that I received my diagnostic mammo/ultrasound results only a few hours ago. Just like you, I began having shooting pain in my left breast over a year ago. I went right away to gynecologist, and he did not feel anything, but rather sent me home. I had two more physicans check me out over past year, and no one suspected anything. I thought every time I felt the pain, that it must had come from back pain, or possibly from wearing a tighter bra, or once even from a heart, as I was going through a very stressful period in my life. But it never occured to me that it would be anything in my breast, especially since three doctors ensured me that "there is no lump and nothing to worry about". I am 33, no kids, healthy lifestyle (minus stress) with no known family history of breast or any kind of cancer. So, I was peaceful and assured that I was only imagining things, even when I felt "something" in my left breast, but could not describe it. It just did not feel right. Exactly a week ago I found a lump about 1" dia, very close to nipple. I've been frightened, as the proof that I was not imagining things was right there, big, painful and solid like a rock. This Tuesday I had my first ever diagnostic mammo, with ultrasound. It was bearable on my right breast, but when my left one was squeezed tight, I almost passed out from the pain in the lump. Tonight I received a letter from my doc saying "Mammo: benign findings, will need ultrasound following in 6 months". I'm still very much worried, even though my friend told me that that's great news. My lump is still here, it sometimes even shoots pain through my entire left arm. On some days I can't even wear bra, and I am really not sure what to do next. I will call my doc tomorrow, to see if there's more he'll tell me, or if he'll suggest further tests. From my perspective, I do not believe that this is it, as it's something I've felt for over a year, and no doc. believed me. My recommendation to you is to go straight to your doc asap and insist on diagnostic mammo/ultrasound and even possible biopsy, if needed. Good luck. Natalie |

Natalie, Even a benign growth can press on a/several nerve(s) from what I've read, causing pain. Some doctors recommend removing the lump in that case; do discuss this with your doctor. Best of luck! Annie |

I just came across this discussion upon googling mysterious breast pain. I am only 18 and for the last month and a half I have been experiencing a shooting and even crippling pain in my right breast. I too don't know what is a lump and what isn't and though I know I should jsut go to the doctor and get it checked out, haven't been to one in probably eight years. I don't know if it is worth looking into or if it is just random pain. |
