I had 1st mammagram done on Oct.15,2009. I received a phone call that following Monday to return for another mammagram and ultrasound to be performed on my right breast only. I returned to have these done on Oct.21,2009. A radiologist read them and came to the little room I was placed in, and showed me the pics. that were taken of my breast. It showed a pea sized formation in my right breast. He said it was very deep within my breast tissue against chest wall. Then he said that he wanted to show the films to his other colleages and get their opinions and then said he would let me know something the following Monday. He then ask if I had a family history of breast cancer, I said yes. My Mom, had a lump removed about 3yrs. ago and it was some type of cancer, but was told it all was removed. My Grandmother had to have a breast removed about 15yrs. ago, but she is passed now. Two of my cousins had to have lumps removed about 4yrs. ago and both were cancer related. He didn't seem to worried about all this information..as for myself, I am now! My question is should I go ahead and start getting 2nd opinions now or wait on more info. from this first round of pics. ? I'm scared and nervous, not sure what my next steps should be or in what direction I need to go.Undecided

I would wait for what his colleges have to say first...if you get a second opinion..they might say they have to get in put from their colleges too..then you are back to square one. If you haven't heard from then by now...Nov 4th...phone and ask...then go from there!

That's a pretty strong family history you gave, and I should think you might wish to see a genetics counselor to discuss BRCA testing. Genetics departments are a separate group from radiologists, breast surgeons and oncologists in some systems, and in others (typically big cancer centers) not.

It will be helpful to hear your radiologists followup to aid you in deciding if you stay with them or go to a breast cancer center. Whatever you do, you want some firm diagnosis established: is this a benign or other finding. Most lumps are benign statistically, but all need a diagnosis.

Maybe an MRI will help too, since your finding was so close to the chest wall.

I'm sorry your going through this and hope you'll let us know how you do.

It cannot be emphasized too strongly that treatment of each patient is a highly individualized matter. (FDA-approved labeling for warfarin (Coumadin) NDA 9-218/5-105)
