Sorry if this has been covered before.....
I have always had cystic breasts, I found a lump a few weeks ago that I did not remember so I scheduled a diagnostic mammogram. The mammo came back with no changes from the previous one, but they did an ultrasound just to be sure. The Dr. send everything looked like normal breast tissue. Today my Ob/Gyn calls and says they think I should follow up with a surgeon. Am I missing something here?? I am self employed with a high deductable and while I would never mess around with my health (especially since I am a Mom) I also hate to spend money on perhaps needless doc visits.
Is this standard operating proceduere these days?? Go to a surgeon just to be sure - seems a bit over kill - but again maybe I am missing something.
Thanks for any input.

I had felt a lump that they could not find on the mammo either. The doctors then could not find it on the sonogram. Since they could clearly feel it, they sent me for a surgical consult. The surgeon did the biopsy the same day as the consult after finding the mass on the sonogram. I have invasive lobular carcinoma...a particularly sneaky type of breast cancer that often does not show on mammos. Since then I've read that up to 22% of mammos are false negatives. I'm not sharing this to scare you, but given my experience, I think it would behoove you to have this checked out further. If it's nothing, great! I'll be hoping it's nothing. For peace of mind, it would be money well-spent. Please update us after the appointment. I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Jeremiah 1:5.

Hi, I've been following this board for over a year but this is the first time I really felt compelled to add my 2 cents. I don't want to frighten you, but my story is this: I had a mammogram & subsequent ultrasound after finding a lump that seemingly popped up overnight. The doctor that read the scans told me I was "fine" & the lump was "completely superficial" and it was unecessary to follow up with the appointment I had sceduled with a highly regarded breast surgeon (just in case). This was coming from a doctor at a prominent hospital's women's imaging center so I took his advice, despite having reservations. Long story short, less than a year later I was diagnosed Stage III and when I had my pre-surgery mammo & ultrasound the cancer STILL did not show up. Only the biopsy & MRI found it. Go with your intuition on this. I didn't, and I am still furious with myself for it. Best of luck. |

I have the opposite problem. I wanted to get a biopsy but the doctor kept pushing me off saying I didnt' need one and the radiologist said to come back in 6 months. Because I went through a cancer program for low income, (I am self employed and made miserable money this year) I did not have access to the doctor who saw me. They came in once a week for a few hours and it is impossible to speak to her. I was told by the c ancer program to go to my prior doctor for a referral, who sent me right back to the Dr who last saw me (at the cancer program) round and round I go. I did not want to wait 6 months but here 3 months has already passed between all the tossing back and forth and phone tag. I have finally gotten an appointment with a breast surgeon and it is schedule for the end of December! Well they got their way now because the 6 months will have passed by that time. I am so frustrated because I want to do something but no one will do it. |

momzybaby - your story is heartbreaking! I can't believe that there isn't a better system out htere for those who don't have the means to save their own lives! Maybe you could raise the issue on the Komen website? Or, maybe with the ACS? Go public! Women shouldn't have to worry about that; they have enough to think about. That is just unacceptable! God Bless, I will be thinking about you. |

Thanks Momcat. I am going to try the website. Also, I am dedicating tomorrow not to work or anything but to try and get a surgeon to see me sooner than December. My neighbor is also going through problems and she has insurance. The doctors keep ordering one thing after another and she has to wait a month or two for each new test. She has discharge coming from a cyst that popped during a mammogram and is still trying to get to the bottom of things. I never heard of Komen website or ACS., I am very new to all of this and was just hoping to find some help online. Thanks again. I will let you know how it turns out tomorrow. |

These post are so sad. My husband is a 100% disabled Viet Nam vet. Because of this I am able to use the VA hospital and my care has been terrific. When I have a mammogram, I see the doctor immediately and he goes over it with me. Then, I go directly to the sonogram room where the same doctor does my sonogram and talks to me the whole time. Last year he saw a lump he didn't like and I had a fine needle biopsy right there on the spot. I wish so much that each and every American had the same quality of care that I have received and continue to receive. (Yeh, I am a big fan of government run health care.) I am getting ready to snap. I called the surgeons office and they say they cannot get me in sooner. If I see another doctor in the practice I can get in by end of November. I called my insurance company advocate and the phones are down and I cannot get through to my primary care doctor. I will keep trying but this is so frustrating. And I am wondering if I find a doctor that IS available, is it because he is a bad doctor? Wishing some doctor somewhere would just look at me and do the darn biopsy! |

Yeah! I have been at it all day and I am now going to see a surgeon this Thursday. Luckily I do not have a full time job at this point. It is becoming very time consuming. I am excited to see the surgeon and hope for good results. |

I would call and ask why they want you to see a surgeon. Tell them you need a clear reason for the referral. Also, ask for a written copy of the mammo report.( I say I will come in and pick it up from the front desk.) You can study the report ahead of your visit to the surgeon and make a list of questions to ask. Some mammo centers do a 2nd reading or a computer reading of your mammogram. Maybe they found something when they took a 2nd look at your films. The first reading of my mammogram found a spot at 2:00. A 2nd reading picked up another questionable area at 11:00! Your story is pretty similar to what I experienced last spring. I think it has become standard procedure for OB/GYNs to deal with unusual areas that don't not show up in imaging with referrals to breast surgeons. Unfortunately, the breast centers (at least in my area) triage the scheduling of appointments by reference to the imaging. So despite the fact that my GYN felt something, based on my clear imaging, I had to wait 3 months for an appointment with the breast surgeon! BTW, having really good insurance was totally irrelevant. Fortunately, everything turned out fine. The surgeon gave me a thorough examination and could not find anything to biopsy. Although she said that this happens regularly, she also said those cautious GYNs save lives through their referrals. Obviously, I understand why they need to prioritize so that they can quickly schedule the patients with BiRads 3,4 and 5. Nonetheless, there is a Catch 22 in being advised to see a breast surgeon at a breast center, told that imaging can be wrong, and not being able to get an appointment. |
