I am 32 years old, with no known family history of bc.  About 4 weeks ago, I noticed a spot that felt different and finally decided to go get it checked for peace of mind.  Today I had a digital, diagnostic mammogram done, followed by an ultrasound.  I was told I do have a mass of some kind that is concerning, and that I should have it biopsied.  Of course, they don't know one way or the other until it they get those results if it is benign or not.  I am scheduled next week for an ultrasound guided core biopsy.

I would like it if you had a situation similar to mine if you could share your story and results.  I'm especially interested in hearing stories of people in similar situations whose diagnoses were benign, but my guess is that there are more people hanging out on these boards that were not so lucky...

 Thanks in advance.

Very few people with benign results tend to stay on these boards once they find out they don't have breast cancer.

Sorry you're going through this diagnostic procedure, which seems to last a lifetime.  The stereotactic core biopsy isn't too bad - I went to work afterwards.  The odds are in your favor, so try not to panic.

Desdemona is absolutely right. Here on this board you will mostly find people whose tumors were found to be cancerous. Those who had B9 finding do not come back unless they have a later malignant finding

Yes, that is what I figured.  I just haven't been able to find any "I had a scare, but it turned out to be nothing" boards.  Smile

I've been reading around and definitely want to educate myself, but want to find a balance, because I'm trying hard to not "freak out" until I know for sure there is a problem.

 Thanks for the responses.

I love your screen name, ihatescreennames!

There's no "I had a scare, but it turned out to be nothing" forum -- but in the "worried and waiting for biopsy results" section, there have been many, many women who have posted to have support while waiting -- and have had benign results.  Then everyone says "yay!!!!" and the thread sinks into the archives!  (if you search "yay!!" or "Woohoo!!" you might find some of these, really)

It's said a lot that approximately 80% of biopsies turn out to be benign...  I'm wishing for that to be the case for you.

Best,

Ann

If you go on the not diagnosed but worried forum, go a number of pages back, and click on the screen name of the people who were asking questions similar to yours.  You will notice that most of them stop posting shortly after their biopsy comes back B9.  Those of us who got a different answer tend to keep coming back.

Until the time when someone comes up with a definitive "cure", we each have to cobble together what we believe will be the most effective treatment that we can live with, not merely survive.

i have noticed that too and i think it's not right. i understand you go on with your life if you get your b9 results, but the least you can do is to come back once in while and give support to people who need it at that time or maybe share your experience.

I didnt have a lump and went in for a cyst that was on my chest wall. My doctor ordered a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. It was those test that I discovered I had other "suspicious areas"  and it has lead to an upcoming biopsy. I was so shocked that I didn't ask any questions.  I have learned a lot on this website and feel better informed. Becoming educated has lessened my stress level and allowed me to put this in God's hands.

I pray for all the women who have been diagnosed with BC. I am glad this website is here so we have each other to lean on, learn from and pray with.

ihatescreennames, I am one of the few B9ers that have stayed around to try to help anyone else with the journey that I have just traveled.  After my yearly digital mammogram I was called back for a magnified mammogram & ultrasound.  Then the next week had a breast MRI, then the next week an MRI guided breast biopsy.  I was helped so much by the women that I met on breastcancer.org that I just can't leave now that my current crisis appears to be over.  Those 3 weeks of fear of the unknown and worry have changed me forever, and I am going to do all that I can to help women like you who are frightened and worried.

Since my B9 (fibroadenoma) diagnosis on Oct. 1st, I have occasionally felt guilty coming back here when so many women have breast cancer, and I don't at this time.  However, my mom is a 6 year breast cancer survivor, so I truly believe that one day I may be diagnosed (I certainly hope not, but it is possible for anyone).  I only go to the postings about women waiting for test results, or those not diagnosed but worried.  I so feel their pain, and I hope that I can help in some small way.

ihatescreennames, please know that I will be thinking of you through this difficult wating time---I continually say that the waiting is excruciating!  I will be praying for you next week for your biopsy.  Keep coming here until then to get support as you wait for the test.  Let us know how you are doing, and how the test goes, as well as your results.  I'll be thinking & praying B9 thoughts & wishes.....Lisa

Sorry you have to be here!  Best wishes to you.  (wanted to say that first)

My story is very similar to yours.  I'm 37, natural mother of 2, first child at 23, breast fed, no family history.  Found a hard, marble type, painless lump on the 8th, saw my OB/GYN on the 12th, diagnostic mammo and u/s on the 13th.  On the 15th my radiologist report stated there was a 2cm x 1.5cm heterogeneous solid lesion.  Gave it an ACR category 4 and suggested a needle biopsy.  I got my referral and saw my breast surgeon on the 20th and had the biopsy that same day.  On the 23rd I was diagnosed with invasive ductal breast cancer and had a partial mastectomy and my lymph nodes removed from the affected side on the 26th.  I'm still trying to catch my breath - but physically, I'm doing good.

I certainly hope your outcome is much better than mine.  Odds are in your favor.  Keep us posted.

Hi ihatescreennames (love the name by the way)

I'm 37 years old, had the scare and my results were benign.  If you click on my name, you'll see my previous posts, so I'll try to keep this short and sweet.  Although, you can see from my previous posts that I tend to be wordy. :)

I felt a lump in the upper right axillary area at the end of June 2009, went to see my PCP in early July.  She sent me for a diagnostic mammo and the radiologist did an ultrasound at the same time.  Neither one showed anything other than asymmetric dense breast tissue and I was told to come back in 6 months.  I decided to see a surgeon for further evaluation since there was a specific palpable lump about the size of a peanut.  He suspected it may be a swollen lymph node and wanted to wait 4 weeks to see if changed at all since there are many reasons a lymph node may be swollen.  When it didn't change in the 4 weeks, he decided to take it out for testing.  It turned out not to be a swollen lymph node, but an ectopic piece of breast tissue that was benign.

I won't tell you not to worry until there is something to worry about, because I know that you will worry anyway!  This site is a wonderful place to get information and support during this time.  Good luck to you and please keep us posted on here.  I will be keeping you in my thoughts for benign results!

Take care.

Thanks for sharing your stories, Ladies.  I really am trying hard not to worry -- If God forbid I get bad news, I'll have plenty of time to worry then.  I'm glad to read stories.

hi, i am 47 yrs old & ever since i was 40 i have been going for mamos & each time they do an ultrasound too & they always find something.  i have had several lumptecnectomies & biposies.  They have been all "benign" but i do have high risk..i have abnormal cells & lots of density...this does NOT mean u'll get cancer, it just makes it high risk.  After dealing w/ this for so many yrs i have decided to have a masectomy.  I do not want cancer & i truly believe i will get it.

please hang in there...many times the lumps are  benign & r cysts.  if i can be of any more help, let me know.

while I was in the "limbo" period- a woman I work with shared her story with me- she had had a B9 lump removed- I was 35- so even just the whole mammo US process I didn't know what to expect going in, had never had a mammo b4. hearing her story of having a lump that was nothing helped ease my mind at the time.

I found a distinct lump, not just a different feeling spot- saw my doc two days later but I had a couple weeks to wait to get in for the mammo- so during that time I really tried to believe there was a good chance it was benign and having her story did help me. I'm still around here a year later- so well it wasn't b9, but 80% are.

Yes, I had my biopsy Monday morning.  I just got the call a couple of hours ago, and unfortunately, the results were not good.  Cancer was found.  It's a weird feeling, knowing.

Well, crap.  I just saw your original post.  I was diagnosed August of this year at age 32 and will never forget the horror of those first few days.  Once you get all the info and a treatment plan things will calm down a bit, promise.  I don't know what to say except I am so so sorry you are joining this club.  Big Big Hugs.

ihatescreennames-so sorry to hear that you will be joining out sisterhood.  It is a great place to be once you are here but none of us really wanted to become a member:) I was diagnosed in January at age 36.  Now I am done with chemo, surgery, and in December reconstruction.  What a difference some time makes.  You will be in fight mode once you come out of shocked, scared sh##less mode.  You will get lots of info from the doctors bring it all here and allow others to help you through each step and answer questions. Lots of support on here.

Best wishes as you start this journey and take lots of deep breaths.  We are here.

I too am 32 years old with NO family history of bc. I had both abnormal mammogram and ultrasound results. They scheduled me for a ductogram which failed because they couldn't get the duct to bleed. I had a duct excision on 10/2 with punch biopsy and biopsy of the duct tissue and they came back b9! I was sick with fear the entire time I went through this process. The waiting truly is the hardest part. Just keep positive and remember that the stats are in your favor - 80% of lumps are b9. I'll be thinking of you. Hang in there...
