I just returned from the surgeon's for a needle biopsy of the lump in one breast, blood work, and a chest X-ray. I saw the digital mammo films with the mass in one breast right after the mammo--other one was clear. The surgeon has ordered MRIs for both breasts. I was doing pretty well till that, and now I'm getting pretty upset. It really hurt when he squeezed the lump.
He said it would be 2 or 3 weeks before all the pathology was analyzed. I'm going to visit a daughter over Thanksgiving, and she doesn't know. I've only told one close friend and one (of four) daughter(s) because they have busy lives and I really have nothing to tell them yet except anxiety.
Please, what can I expect from the tests ordered? I am telling myself to prepare for a mastectomy at worst. I know I'll calm down, but my normal 120/80 was 158/83 at the doctor's today. The more information the more of an educational moment this will be.
Thanks!
Judy

Dear Judy, The MRI will look deeper and may help find or rule out other smaller abnormalities in the breast. The biopsy will tell them whether the mass is cancer and if so, what type (ER/PR, HER2), how fast is it likely to grow (Grade, KI67), what treatment it is more likely to respond to, etc. The waiting is the hardest. Right now you are doing what all of us have done - ask questions, read up, look for excellent oncologists in your area, second opinion breast surgeons etc and educate oneself. Do keep asking for copies of test reports and films, CD's, etc as you get the tests done. Onty. Lumpectomy 8/2009. Chemo 9/2009 to 2/2010. DD 4AC --> 12T +/- B (ECOG 5103)
Diagnosis: 7/2009, IDC, 3cm, Stage IIb, Grade 3, 1/9 nodes, ER-/PR-, HER2- |

Hi Judy, I had a breast MRI done on 10/27/09. The procedure isn't that bad. In order for them to be able to see all the veins, masses and structures within the breast they start and I.V. and during the last part of the MRI they do run a type dye in. You are on your stomach for this type of MRI and your breast are in plastic like cones and you are face down on the MRI table and your arms are up by the sides of your head. The worst part of the entire thing is that you can't move for the duration of the MRI, just breathe. I'm not sure how fast the radiologist will read your MRI results, but my surgeon called me before I had even gotten home about 4 hrs later with the results. I wish you much luck and will be praying for B9 results. Renee
