hello i am 26 and 2 weeks ago i found a large painful knot in the upper part of my left breast. it has changed in size in the past 2 weeks. i went to my pcm and she felt it and sent me to have a diagnostic mammogram with ultra sound yesterday (4-25-12) but they would only do the ultra sound. the radioligst told me that the ultra sound looked clear but he could feel the places that i was complaining about. for some reason they would not show up on the ultra sound. he also told me that the place i was describing sounds like a tumor. it is very painful i doesnt move and its gotten bigger since i found it 2 weeks ago. i am very scared. i had a complete hysterectomy 2 years ago and i havent been on any hormones. i have a appt with a breast spec may 2. i dont understand how i can have this large painful place and be told its normal and the ultrasound is normal. im freaking out. if its not trobing pain it feels like its on fire. my left arm hurts and it goes numb. i cant sleep on my left side or my stomach. its effecting my daily life. i want to cry. i do not have a family history of breast cancer but i do have a family history of cancer. and i had a large amount of pre cancerous cells in my cervix when they done the hysterectomy. should i be this freaked out about it.

Hey Amanda,

First off, take a breath. LOL

I also have a history of BC in my family. I am also waiting on my biospy of my cervix to come back to tell me if I have pre or cancerous cells. I understand you fear.

I am 29 and 2 years ago I found a small lump in my right breast. I went to 2 doc had a mammo, and u/s at that time, they both told me I was too young and not to sorry about it. Now 2 years later, I go to another doc b/c of the change in size and it became painful, again I was told too young.

I meet with a b/s and she heard my concern, She also did an U/S and did not see anythhing but did feel it. She ended up removing it just to make sure.  Come to find out it was only a fatty tumor that has grown. The reason it was not showing up on the mammo or the U/S is b/c it was a fatty tumor......YAY....The turmor was 2.5 cm. Im glad she removed it and this was only 2 weeks ago tomorrow.

I would say try to write down your symptoms, that way when you go in you can give the B/S the details.   I was sceared and forgot to say a few things but it all came back fine.

I will be praying for you!

Hello Amanda and welcome.

Glad you are seeing a breast specialist soon.

AFA the US and the mammo. First, they are different types of imaging. Sometimes something shows up in one but not the other. Did anything appear in your diagnostic mammo? You said nothing showed up in the US?

Also, because of your age, your breast tissue is more than likely denser, which also can make it harder to show up on diagnostic imaging.

Couple of things you need to know, most lumps, esp at your age, have nothing to do with cancer. But it is wise to get it checked out. The fact that it has gotten larger in 2 weeks makes it sound something like a fibroandenoma, a B9 condition.

I see....

Well when you see the BS, I would press for a biopsy since it is palpable but not showing up on imaging. Its the only way to know what it going on and you should get a definitve answer.

Take a deep breath, not sure if anyone has told you but BC is not usually found by a pain...needs a test really,

but you are doing the right thing, you have an appt with a BS and that is good,  Try to stay busy between now and then

I am sure they will be able to do a biopsy, there are dif types and your surgeon will choose what is best for you

now go get a pedicure/manicure or something to ease your mind and relax.

do they put you to sleep to do a biopsy? the radioligst was telling me yesterday that what i was describing was a tumor. but couldnt understand why it wasnt showing up on the u/s. he could feel it. i just want the pain to stop. i would love a good nights full 8 hours of sleep. that would help me so much.

Isn't it frustrating to hear "no" because of your age? I am sorry to hear you aren't getting the treatment you would like...I am not having the same problems, but I can definately relate, I am 29 and was told repeatedly that at my age no further testing was needed. I didn't accept that as a reason not to get to the root of my breast issues and found a BS that took my care seriously, regardless of my age. He ordered an MRI. The MRI showed an issue that 2 ultrasounds couldn't see. I had surgery yesterday and I am waiting for my path results to come in. Check with your BS and let them know your fears and that you want to do everything possible to ensure your health. Listen to your gut and your doctors. Warm thoughts and prayers your way...keep us posted!

As others have said - a biopsy is definately doable. There are different types of biopsies that are used for different reasons. Remember that 80% of biopsies are benign so the odds are that yours will come back benign.

There are many possibilities of what is going on and most are not something to really worry about but do need to be taken care of. Do you have any other symptoms?

Amanda,

The fact that you are experience great pain means that they will remove the lump. They arent going to brush you off and tell you to continue to deal with the pain you have been describing. Most likely they will put you to sleep for the removal. When they remove it, they will send it off to pathology to see exactly what it is.

Hey Amanda,

I undeestand that it hurts mine did as well. My surgery went great. It was out patient and I was home before lunch. The pain wasnt that bad. If you have this much pain now then after, it will feel a relife to you. I had it Friday and Sat. morring I was at my kids Baseball game. It was kinda sore for a few days but again compaired to not knowing and that pain I would do it again.

As I said before just breath and try to find a comfy sopt at night and try to rest.

If the area becomes hot and inflamed and/or you develope a fever, you might want to go a DR ASAP - could be an infection.

I am so sorry.  :-(    If things get worse, like the other ladies said about fever, or the area feeling hot to the touch, you should go to an urgent care center or the emergency room for sure. Did you ever take 400 mgs of IB? That's the standard dose for injuries, and up to 800 mg might be prescribed, of course it chould trash your stomach if you have a sensitive system. I was thinking if it is somehow muscular this will help whereas tylenol won't do as much. I hope the weekend goes fast for you, try to stay busy - maybe go to a few movies to make time go by fast?  I've found that sitting around the house makes me hyper focus on things, whereas when I'm out doing stuff I feel better. I'll be back to check on you soon :-)

Amanda...NOTHING is worse than NOT knowing...no matter the outcome, it is always easier to know and weigh the options. Everything can be dealt with....just try not to panic...you will feel so much better after you find out what it is.  I was always certain I would get BC at some point so strange as it seems, it was kind of a relief when I was diagnosed. The treatment wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined and I had it all.............surgery (lumpectomy)...chemo for months and radiation for weeks. I am feeling fine...so will you.

i agree and i cant wait to find out what is going on.  i have already been threw so many health problems in my life that to be honest it wouldnt suprise me. i really hope its not cancer but if it is i will do what i have to. i thought having a complete hysterctomy at 24 was in the end of the world but clearly it wasnt. im ready for answers and to know what is going on. if this is a tumor and its b9 will i still have chemo and radiation. or is there anything they do for that. my dad had a large tumor removed from his bladder and it was cancer but he didnt have any treatment just removing it. and hes fine.

There is no rhyme or reason for BC...it happens like so many other diseases.. these days they say it is more of a chronic disease but for sure there are so many ways to treat it...each case is different and every Oncologist has his/her own ideas based on experience and clinical trials. Rest assured Amanda...it's not as bad as you hear, at least for most people.

Amanda,

If it's B9, they will just remove it, esp since it is causing you so much pain (mine tumor is B9, but since it isnt causing me any pain, I chose to leave it alone).

Chemo and radiation is for malignancy, not for B9 tumors. Smile
