I had a diagnostic mammogram and u/s last week which is leading to a core biopsy tomorrow morning.  I was told I have the choice of whether or not to have Valium for the biopsy.  I'm not big on painkillers but don't want to get half way through the procedure and wish I would've taken the Valium.  Thoughts?

I am not big on drugs either, but a little valium goes a long way with "taking the edge off". My second biopsy (with valium) was MUCH easier than the one without.  I won't ever hesitate to take it in the off-chance I ever need a biopsy again - which I am assuming, I won't ;-).

By the way, I did not feel drugged at all, I just did not mind ... and this was even when the needle broke off in my breast when he hit the marker left there from the previous biopsy!

Good luck!

Valium isn't a pain killer. It is an anti anxiety medication with muscle relaxing qualities.

I would take it.

If you are anxed about the procedure and have the chance for a prescription, take it!

I also recommend to ANYONE undergoing needle or wire localization prior to excision to SPEAK UP to the surgeon and anesthesiologist about your anxiety!  It's not like you are going to be operating heavy machinery anytime soon!

I was so worried about the actual surgery that I did not mind my wire localization as much as I thought I would.   I went in at 7AM had the wires placed, and then went to work until 10:30, checked into the hospital at 11:00 for surgery.  It was weird having wires sticking out (well, they taped them down, but you know what I mean), but not painful or anything.

I thought the ultrasound guided biopsies for the mass (versus the wires for the microcalcs - in a different spot) was much worse on my anxiety ...
