I am thinking that we all need something to do to keep our hands and minds busy as we are waiting for test results, going through treatments, trying to move beyond, etc. This may not be for everyone as not everyone is "crafty" but maybe if we can get a variety of different crafts and ideas we can all find something to do to keep our minds off the stress of bc.
I read an article a while back about coloring and stress. I wish I could find it again but basically it stated that coloring is good for you if you are feeling stressed or anxious as it makes you use the same side of your brain that is making you feel the way you do. Coloring (whether with crayons, marker, colored pencils, whatever)keeps your mind and hands too busy to worry. Hey...anything is worth a shot.
Here are some of my favorite links...lots of fun.

www.lionbrand.com A crochet and knitting site with tons of free patterns. You do have to register but it's free.

http://www.teabagfolding.circleofcrafters.com/index.html
This has instructions for teabag folding that looks complicated but is quite simple and fun.

http://www.yamaha-motor.co.jp/global/entertainment/papercraft/index.html
This is really fun...you print all kinds of different things (use cardstock if you can as it works better) and glue them together...never tried the motorcycles...wayyyy to challenging for me!

http://parenting.leehansen.com/crafts/bath-scrubbie1.htm
To make an herbal bath scrunchy...fun and easy and not much need in the way of supplies.

http://jas.familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts?page=CraftDisplay&craftid=10004
Mittens made from old wool sweater for those of us who are "knitting challenged". These are easy and fun and really warm...make them longer than the pattern or they will not cover your wrists well enough.

Oh my...I have so many more...join the fun ladies.
Hugs,
Vickie

I also made heating pads in many shapes and colors.
Supplies
Fleece material, baby blankets, washclothes, towels, or any soft material.
Rice
Pouporri (sp?)
Simply sew up your heating pad in whatever shape you desire, round, square, rectangular leaving a small opening at one end. Turn right side out. Using a funnel fill with a combination of the rice and pouporri. Close opening. To use...pop in the microwave for about 3 to 5 minutes...soft cozy warmth!!! Be sure that after using it 3 or 4 times that you spray it lightly with water and let it dry or the rice inside will eventually dry out too much...I didn't know this and just read it!! Oops.

more crochet!

http://www.berroco.com/
Berroco has free patterns with really luxurious yarns. They haave a free newsletter to let you know when new patterns come in.

http://www.michaels.com/art/online/home
This is the Michaels Crafts Store online webpage. They have free patterns and tabs for almost every craft imaginable.

I hope this thread will bring us all closer together with a common "thread" of our own. It can also be a good clearing house for where to find instructions or for people like me who need coaching.

Have fun!

We make the heating pads, but use whole, dried field corn...like you would feed cows. It draws moisture to it so you don't have to spray it. It is also harder to burn than rice. We love them and call them Cornie Buddies. We use to fight over them until my mom made us each 2 in our own colors of fleece

I have to go to work, but I LOVE to craft and will add some links later

My husband said he would put me in some new built ins .
DIY has some great ideas too. If anyone knows some sites with scrap-booking ideas please post the link.

Thanks for such a great thread

I don't know if what I do is considered crafty! but when I can see I love to sew. I make all my own slipcovers and shades and curtains and my favorite part is just doing it by hand. I have a sewing machine, but I like the detail work.

I also love to refinish furniture!

My grandmother tried to teach me how to crochet once. She kept laughing at me because I was all thumbs. She finally had to come around to the back of my chair and wrap her arms around me and literally hold each of my hands until I "got" it.

I recently found the ONE thing I crocheted myself- I remember how my grandmother laughed when she saw it- I made a bonnet for my cat!

Whether you knit, crochet, scrapbook, paint, stained glass, needlepoint, make cards, beading, refinish and/or make furniture, cross stitch, hook rugs, ceramics, sculpt or anything else you enjoy...here we can express our artsy selves and maybe even post pics of our finished works.

Like Vickie, I need somethng to keep my mind off of bc and the world in general. It is amazingly soothing. And if your craft is portable, it is a wondr how you connect in waiting rooms with others. So, this is our owm waiting room to connect with our favorite crafts and hobbies.

BTW, anybody good with knitting advice? Also, I download the patterns from Lion Brand and others and store them on CD. That way I can always reference it and print it out for me and others. Saves a lot of room.

I can do anything but knit (well anything that the neuropathy will allow me to do as I used to paint and draw). I have literally hundreds of crochet patterns. If your looking for something in particular let me know. I have my late moms collection so I have the bed doll patterns, baby patterns, afghan patterns...you name it and I've probably got it.
Ok...dumb question...what kind of beans are you using in the heating pads?
Another dumb question...Margaret...how do you do the no sew fleece blankets? Do you just cut and tie them. Thinking about starting gifts and things for our Holiday Bazaar for next year and I LOVE fleece!
Also looking for a link for sculpted dolls that are made using nylons and stuffing...you stuff the nylon to make the head and then sew them to "sculpt the nose and mouth etc."...we made them in school but I need a refresher!!
Love ya ladies
Have fun!
I'll find more links tomorrow...i have a treasure trove of links!

I copy the pattern and then highlight the size I am making to keep track. This way I don't mess up the original.
Binghampton is probably about 180 miles away from Willow Grove. We are in the Philly burbs.

Denise, i have the perfect craft for you that is a great gift too! It is a scissors holder (you can use it for pens and pencils too):

Supplies:
Square potholder
pair of scissors
hot glue
needle and thread
spare buttons, fun shapes and sizes are good

Fold over one corner of the potholder to the center so as to make a pocket, leaving the loop at the top so it can hang. Tack it down just a little with needle and thread. Hot glue around to hold it in place. Take buttons and glue in random pattern as decoration. Put scissors (or pens and pencils, great for kids) inside! Keeps them organized and points are protected.

If you need help, let me know.

Cherryl, I will let you when I try to finish the 2 projects! I have to finish the sweatshirt first.

Beth

Here is a link to something called "The Red Scarf Project" to benefit orphans who have aged out of foster care and are now attending college on their own. Hand-knit or crocheted scarfs are included in a care package intended to arrive on Valentine's day for these students. I am working on #2 scarf now. They need to be mailed to the organization in January for assembly into care packages in early Feb. Here is a link. There are specific dimensions and instructions for the scarf.

Will check back later -- #2 scarf is only about 24" long and I have to get to 60" in the next 2 weeks!! -- Donna

Stupid trigger finger has kept me off the boards so don't ask me how I'm going to crochet but maybe it will be gone by the time we get organized. At the moment I am typing one handed.
