SO my mom was diagnosed with BC in 2006, went through surgery and radiation and was cancer free. Last Thursday went in for annual mamogram and they called Friday to tell her to come in Wed, today, for sonogram. Mom went in for sonogram and now she is being taken in for a biopsy. I am really scared for her and are her chances higher for having BC again because she has already had it?

Unfortunately the answer to your question is yes...once someone has had bc there is always a risk of it returning.

But before you get to far ahead in the worry department try to remember that many of us whom have had surgery and treatment for breast cancer have the types of scares with call backs and further testing....once you have had all this treatment there can be scar tissue so they always check just to be sure.

Hang in there. things will be ok

Yes the chances are greater but I think they also keep a closer eye on those of us who have had BC.

The reason they told your Mom that about not doing radiation again is because they can not radiate the same area more than once. Good luck with this and let us know how it all goes.

I am sorry to hear that but don't worry too much just yet. If your mom had a lumpectomy and radiation and the cancer came back, it is true that she will most likely need a mastectomy. But all this does not necessarily affect her prognosis in a negative way. A local recurrence (or possibly a new primary) in this area can be very treatable.

Best wishes,

Helena.

Going thru the same thing.  Original dx was 2001 - stage 1, grade 3, lumpectomy with 0/2 nodes.  fine for 8 years.  now - back again.  I am opting for bi-lateral because I do not want to go thru this again.  (tho I do understand that it doesnt mean i cant get cancer again just cause i have my "girls" removed. )  But I am going to try for the "diep" reconstruction, so I can also come out of this with also a flatter tummy, so I can feel like I got something out of this for me!  Its always scary, but all we can do is fight it....alternatives arent very good! Wink Everyday you wake up is a good day, so hold that thought and just keep going forward, right ladies?

She saw the surgeon and he wants to do a mastectomy, the thing is she doesn't. Her mass is 11cm and he said is was not a recurrence that it is a new primary. They told her last time that the reason she got it was because of the hormones she was taking because of her hysterectomy. She also had genetic testing that came back negative. So I am not understanding if she is not taking hormones and she doesn't have the gene, why did this come back and why so strong? She goes and sees the radiologist and oncologist today and they really want her in surgery by the end of the week. I am not there and I am feeling absolutely horrible about it, I also feel so out of the information loop.

Thank you all!

Snshine916, we cant always understand this disease.  Its been 8 years since my original dx and I did all the things I was supposed to.  After 5 years of tamoxifen, cant understand why mine is back.  (((((((((hugs))))))))) to both u and your mom.  Please let us know how things are going.

OK   have bilateral and reconstruction surgery scheduled in NOLA for 9/10/09.  Glad of that!  Picked up copy of my er/pr and her2 path report.  Surprised because my her2 is positive and pr neg, say er is positive but only 1%   My 1st dx in 2001 was her2 -  so this is a new cancer, not a reoccurance, huh?  My sister was her2+ with her bc and always figured it was not any heredity because we have different kinds, but guess that shows me how much I know, lol.  Also...had 37% moderate (2) intensity Ki-67 which evidently is not too good. <sigh>  I will feel much better after surgery and getting the sentinel node biopsy done so I will know if I have to have chemo this time....   A little upget over those numbers i got today, but overall, glad to have surgery finally scheduled.

Hi, I just went thru the same thing and the mastectomy is behind me.  Your Mom will heal. and there really aren't alternatives after you've used up the RADS.  Mine came back in less than 2 yrs., same breast, same diagnosis and 0/16 lymphs so that's my good news.  But the doc is ordering chemo and herceptin for my HER 2neu 3 stat.  its disarming!  I never ever wanted chemo.  but I'll get prayed thru this too.  You and your mom will also be in my thoughts and prayers.  keep us posted and put her on here if she'd like some personal cheerleaders, a host of Amazon women.  just discovered the warrior history via an Art and Rage book by Susan Komen foundation.  arby

Yea, I am beginning to find out that the her2 status will probably mean that I will need chemo, regardless of the lymph node status, but....one thing at a time
