Out of curiosity I have always wondered what benefits came from breast feeding, whether good health, reaching full height potential, and diseases later more susceptible too. I wondered if breast feeding helped my daughter, and I felt like it helped lower my chances of getting BC, but then I wondered how I may have been affected by being bottle fed...then I came across an interesting fact. I'll just paste it and the website:

http://www.promom.org/101/

Formula feeding increases baby girls' risk of developing breast cancer in later life
Women who were formula-fed as infants have higher rates of breast cancer as adults. For both premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer, women who were breastfed as children, even if only for a short time, had a 25% lower risk of developing breast cancer than women who were bottle-fed as infants.

Freudenheim, J. et al. 1994 "Exposure to breast milk in infancy and the risk of breast cancer". Epidemiology 5:324-331

Not breastfeeding increases mother's risk of breast cancer
Many studies have shown that women who breastfeed have lower risks of developing breast cancer. Recently, data from 47 studies in 30 countries was re-examined. The study group concluded that the incidence of breast cancer in developed countries could be reduced by more than half if women had the number of births and lifetime duration of breastfeeding that have been common in developing countries until recently. According to the analysis, breastfeeding could account for almost two-thirds of this estimated reduction in breast cancer incidence.

So it would be interesting to see how many of us were bottlefed or breastfed and our types of BC and age dx. and whether we had children and breast fed them.

I'll start:

yes I and my sister were both bottlefed and both had IDC

I was diagnosed at age 43 and my sister at age 32

I breastfed my two children, my sister bottlefed her one child

My mother was breastfed and never been dx with BC, has regularly been screened

thanks!

Hi!  This is a great thread and something I have always wondered about myself.

I am 52 and was diagnosed last July with IDC.  I was bottle-fed, have two adult children and bottle-fed them, and my mom is 80 years old and never had a breast cancer diagnosis.  My daughter is breast-feeding her baby currently, and just recently had a benign breast lump aspirated (that was a scare!).  My sister who is 62 was probably bottle-fed (never thought to ask that question) and she has never had a breast cancer diagnosis.

I have often wondered too if breastfeeding my children would have prevented my BC.  But since there are so many ladies who did breastfeed and have also been diagnosed with BC, I don't put a lot of faith in the statistics.  Though I'm sure breastfeeding is great for babies, my grandson doesn't seem to be growing at the rate my children did when they were infants, and they were never overweight.  Just my own thoughts on the subject.

Thanks!

I think my mom was breast fed and dx in 2001 with bc. My mom tried breast feeding my older brother but developed mastitis and had to bottle feed the rest of us. I was bottle fed and dx with bc in 2007 and I breast fed my son for 8 months.

I breastfed 3 kids for a total of over 6 years of nursing.

Diagnosed at age 48 with IDC.

(Oh, and the kids had ear infections, needed orthodonture, and aren't as tall as I expected our kids would be looking at dh and me.)

Group statistics are just that, reflections of large groups, not necessarily of individual experience.

My mother was breastfed and at age 84, with regular screening, has never had a BC dx.

Her mother, my grandmother, had 7 daughters.  Only one has had a BC dx, at around age 65, and she is doing great at age 75.

This should be very interesting. I was breast fed but I don't know how long. I breast fed all three of my children for a year. I was dx with IDC at 54 March, 2007. I did think that breast feeding would keep me safe from BC. Looks like the joke is on us.

I wasn't breast fed and I didn't (couldn't) breast feed my kids. I was diagnosed with IDC when I was almost 51.

My kids were fat babies and today are very healthy. They complained about that because they rarely if ever stayed home from school because they were Never sick! Today my kids are young adults and healthy and in very good shape. No fat kids.

I was a fat baby and I've never been fat since...have even been underweight.

I'm the only one with breast cancer in our family.

But being the clutz I was, it was easier to pop my son's on the boob than to mx formula and bottle feed.  I had to do if for one week had mastitis in one breast and Dr. said no breast feeding for one week while on antibiotics, and boy did I break bottles and just listening to my son cry waiting for him mild made me crazy.  I found breast feeding easy compared to sterilizing and mixing, just call me lazy.

I am 53, dx with IDC at 50 (metastatic now).  I was breastfed, and I had four children and breastfed each of them for fifteen months.  I'm triple negative, though, and supposedly breastfeeding children makes a difference in hormone positive cancers because it reduces the time your body is producing estrogen.

My sister and I were not breastfed.  She was Dx at age 41, I was 43 when dx with BC.  We both breast fed our children.  My mother was breastfed and never had a dx of BC although she died at age 52. There are no other females in our family that have or have had BC, we were the biggest advocates of breastfeeding, but I guess the statistics did not work in our favor!

All five of us (3 Brothers, 1 sister) were bottle fed. I have one daughter, and she was bottle fed. I believe my mom was bottle fed. My mom died from Kidney cancer at age 62, dad from Bladder cancer at 72. I was diagnosed at 45 with IDC, stage IIIb. Honestly, thinking about it, I was already half expecting to be diagnosed with a cancer, but figured it would be in my urinary tract. So far, all brothers and sister are cancer free. Great thread!

My mother and her sisters were breastfed.  Their mother got Paget's in the 1950s.  My mother and her older sister both got BC -- IDC for my aunt (in her 60s) and DCIS for my mother at 81.  My aunt died at 87 of Alzheimer's; my mom will be 88 in November and is completely NED after lumpectomy, rads and 5 years of tamoxifen.  The youngest sister died at 80 of lung cancer.

My mother couldn't breastfeed us (inverted nipples), so I was a cow's milk baby (violently allergic to formula).  I was dx'd with DCIS last year, 2 weeks before my 50th birthday.  I have had no children, so obviously I didn't breastfeed!  Wink My father died of liver cancer at 53; my older brother died 2 years ago at 57 of lung cancer; two other siblings are currently cancer-free.  I'm BRCA neg.

Interesting thread ..
