I am 23 years old. I had a phyllodes tumor (1 1/2 inch in diameter) removed from my left breast in 2004. Now I have found something in my right breast, feels the same as my other tumor did and is noticeably bigger. If it comes back as another phyllodes tumor (or anything suspect), I'm considering getting a masectomy and possibly reconstruction! Has anyone ever done this before?? Is this kind of a rash decision?
I'm scared.

Hey Dre - No, I don't think your notion is rash at all! Phyllodes tumors aren't anything I would want to be fooling around with. Rose

Here's a ton of info about reconstruction. it's not rash. It's your body, and your breasts. I was dx at age 26, and removed both breasts- one prophylactically. If you have to continue to be watched, and poked, and prodded, and biopsied, your breasts will have a ton of scar tissue, and you may be displeased with the way they look- especially if you have small breasts. I think the important thing to do is have a breast surgeon who is 100% on board with a decision like that. Also, if you decide to do this-- you have to be prepared for the emotional side of it all-- no breast feeding, no sexual arousal... but for me, those weren't enough to keep me from getting an amazing new set of cancer free breasts that never have to be mammo'd ever again!!!!!!!!!!! You have to do some leg work though-- will your insurance cover it? Start interviewing plastic surgeons etc... even if you decide to keep your breasts- do the homework and make an informed decision. I told you I only play to win....

Hi Dre I know EXACTLY how you feel- I am 22 years old and I am about to go in tomorrow to get a large phyllodes tumor removed and reconstruction. I will be having a mastectomy because my tumor is so large in comparison to the rest of my breast. It was a HUGE shock to begin with and sooo stressful- but if you have to do it- you WILL get through it, I promise. The good news is the chance of having another phyllodes tumor in the OTHER breast is extremely unlikely- unless it is in the same breast the you first got it removed from, in which case it could just be coming back. The chances of having a phyllodes tumor at our age is so small that we are more likely to actually get breast cancer, therefore having two phyllodes tumors, one in each breast is sooo unlikely. You should get a biopsy done first to determine what it is and then consider your options- I know its easy to start getting worried about these things before you find out :) It's probably a fibroadenoma- they are VERY similar to phyllodes- and they are completely benign. But definately get it checked out asap! Best of luck- pm me if you ever want to chat! |

Hi - I was released from the hosp yesterday. I underwent a bilateral mastectomy with immed. reconstruction. I was first diag in 2000 with bc on the left side, had lumpectomy, chemo, rads. In 2006, I had bc on the right side, lumpectomy chemo, rads. Did some research and DID NOT want to face another bc whenever if felt like coming back, it could be a year, two years, five years, six years, who knows. I am not disappointed in the choices i made. But enough is enough. This was something I could do, not something I had to do. It has bought me some peace of mind, which is priceless. Now, what ever happens, happens, at least I know I did all I could to prolong my life, and lower my anxiety and stress levels. Good luck I know you will make the right decision. This site is great. Do research, know your options. Take control, try and not let it control you. Live happy, stay strong. Love Nancy |

I had DCIS of L breast, lumpectomy without clear margins. Doc suggested I considered mastectomy. After it was scheduled, they decided to MRI the R breast and found a lump the mamo missed!. It was not cancer but I decided on bilateral as the whole mamo missed lump made me skeptical of future mamos. I did the bilateral to lower my risk of recurrance and stress level. I have several coworkers who have since told me the wished they had gone the route I chose as they FEAR their annual mamo and are nuts for weeks before the mamo and then skeptical afterwards. Life is too short to be in such a state of mine. I am having reconstruction and am delighted with the results thus far. In my heart, I know I made the right decision for me and they type of worrier I am. Best of luck. I was absolutely amazed at the options and decisions a woman has to make in such short order - when faced with bc.!! Dx 3/28/2008, DCIS, 2cm, Stage Ia, Grade 3, 0/2 nodes, ER+/PR+, HER2- |

I have had stage 1 breast cancer in the left breast and needed a mastectomy & apted to have reconstruction (tissue expander). Luckily all my lympth nodes were clean so I didn't need any chemo nor radiation. If I had to to it all over again I would have had the other breast removed. We have a big history of b. cancer in our family. My sister just past away 3 years ago from this ugly disease and 8 months after her death I was diagnosed. I truly thought it had to be some joke. But it wasn't!! |

I wish I had had the other breast removed at the same time too. I just dont want to deal with future anxiety, side affects of tamoxifen, constent wondering. mammos and on and on. Maybe I can talk to my bs and get some input. Origanally I was going to get a lump. with rads but oppted for left mast.. When I went to go talk to the bs a week after the surgery, she said it had been a good idea because of something on the report. Now that I see her the 24th Im thinking alittle better and am going to get more details which might help with another mast on other side. Can you imagine not worrying about cancer? It has not been that long since I was diag with it but it sure seems like a long time..My mothe rpassed away with breast cancer 6 years ago and that has a affect on how you decide what to do. thanks for listning....aurora Dx 5/5/2008, DCIS, Stage 0, Grade 3, 0/1 nodes |
