Hi ladies: Happy to say my lump incision is all good, but SNB - ugh! Had 3 nodes removed a week ago. During the last 48 hours I think I have felt any and all of the following at various times:
- sore, sandpaper feeling
- periods of stinging
- knifelike stabs
- tightness - like a rubber band being stretched
- icy-water flowing through my arm, shoulder to finger-tips
This morning I noticed my skin was "pinkened" and warm in the area next to and in front of the incision, kinda spreading from the armpit area over the top of my breast. Doc's office said to watch til tomorrow and call back if not better - she'd try to squeeze me in for a look-see. I don't want to over-react, but if it's possibly the start of an infection(?), I really don't want to be waiting it out over the weekend.
Anyone else experience this? How did it resolve, and how long did it take?

How are you doing???? I just found your post and can't believe no one responded! Hope things are doing well now. I had some stinging, burning, knife-like pains after my right mastectomy and SNB but they didn't last too long. Apparently it's from the nerves that get cut during surgery. They do settle down but there may be some numbness that continues in varying degrees. What happened with the pinkness? Is it all resolved or did you need antibiotics? Sorry your post must have gotton down on the list so few of the ladies saw it. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13 His Hands hold me up!

I hope your symptomms have resolved a bit or you have some answers. I had a bil mastectomy w\SNB so I can't speak to your symptoms, but I did have similar tightness and stabbing which got better over time. I still have some here and there, but I was told it was the nerves trying to reconnect. I hope all is well for you!! lisa Lisa -mets to lungs & brain.....the weakest step toward the top of the hill, toward sunrise, toward hope, is stronger than the fiercest storm.

Thanks for following up 2Hands4me. The pinkness seemed to settle down after last weekend - only a bit in the crease of my armpit now. Icy feeling is gone too. But my skin is still supersensitive, inside arm elbow to armpit and across my lumpectomied (is that a word?) breast. Axillary incision is sore too. I'm seeing my surgeon for follow-up (and path report - yikes!) tomorrow, so will see what she says. In the meantime, I searched and found lots on these boards (thank you ladies!) about the sensitive sandpapery feeling. Today, I've been trying to massage a bit to see if that helps settle down the brain-nerve mess-up. Diagnosis: 9/14/2009, IDC, 2cm |

Oh I have had all sorts of odd pains. Zings, stabbs, twinges, and vibrations. Almost like being a musical instrument! |

Luah, It sounds to me like you may have mild lymphadema. I did after my sentinel node biopsies, on each side. But, it was the right side; my dominant side, that had residual lymphadema. I had discomfort down my right arm and swelling in my right hand. The Lymphadema physical therapist helped a great deal with their special massage, and provided sleeves and gloves for me to use post-double masectomy, which came after chemotherapy. It turns out that after the masectomies and the removal of my chemo port, all of the swelling in my right hand went away. You may want to ask your doctor about a recommendation for therapists in your area who specifically treat Lymphadema. Or, check out the Lymphadema thread on this board. "Binny" is our resident expert! (Don't worry, lymphadema is not as terrifying as it sounds. Mine is all gone now, and yours will be too, soon!)
