I had a BLM  1.5 years ago with 1 Node removed on my left cancer side.

I have Numb & shooting needle pains on my sides...right in those Ugly Fat gobs we are left with.

But the Numbness goes around to my back...It is numb on both sides- the right is less.

And not nearly as numb as my sides or front.   But still numb.  Having my Back scratched doesnt even feel good : (

is anyone else numb like this that did not have a lot of nodes out?  Or even if you did have alot of Nodes out.

What would cause back numbness... from this surgery?

Hi Pam, such a timely post.  I have been trying to figure out the same thing since July 2008 when I woke up from my bi-lateral mx with numbness on my prophy side (left) that went all the way around to my shoulder blade. I decided to give my body a year to heal and regenerate those nerves (?) if possible. The numbess is still there.

Over the months I've asked my BS and PS why I would have numbness on my back and side where they didn't even take the sentinel nodes.  My cancer side has no numbess except on my foob. The answer has always been "you've just been through major surgery, these symptoms should resolve with time." Well, now I'm going to a new doctor today to (hopefully) get some answers.  I'll keep you posted. I'm sorry you're experiencing this, too.  Hugs, Lisa

Sorry to hear you have this numbness also Lisa.

Huh, Well at least we are now not alone.  Makes one feel better to know someone else has it too...Doesnt give us answers...But it Does help.

I thought it would go away with time...And it may still...I think massaging it may help...But its impossible to reach- LOL

Do let me know what you hear.  Even some answers as to why would help us...As it jsut doesnt seem like our back sould have been effected by the surgery. (at least it doesnt seem that way to me)

Pam - You're right - it's nice to know we're not alone. My PT told me this is not a normal outcome and she specializes in post-mastectomy patients.  It's frustrating to say the least.

I saw an orthopedic doc yesterday afternoon.  Not sure why I started with him.  I guess I wanted someone completely objective and thinking outside the box.  SO...he took x-rays of my shoulder and did a thorough exam.  He THINKS the problem is a pinched nerve in my neck (maybe C8 based on my symptoms).  So he's referring me to a neck specialist.  His thought is that the nerve was compressed during surgery due to positioning, not that a nerve was cut.  In this case the numbness should go away as the nerve recovers.

I'm not sure what I think about this theory.  I'll keep you posted.  Please let me know if you find out anything as well. Most likely 5 years from now our bodies will have done their work to recover and we will have moved on without even realizing it.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers on November 5th.  You deserve a beautiful outcome and I know you will be in the best hands in the world.  Hugs, Lisa xoxo

I had a bilateral mastectomy (no recon) last september, and I am also still numb!  I was not prepared for the amount of numbness and thought I would have recovered more feeling by now.  I get itchy, but it seems to be far under my skin and can't be scratched - drives me crazy!  I only had a SNB, so I was not prepared for this outcome.  My surgeon said she cannot tell me if this will be permanent or I will recover more feeling.

I have read online about some surgeons are developing a different approach and trying to design ways to remove lymph nodes without severing nerves.  Doesn't help us, but those in the future may benefit.

I had a modified radical mastectomy of the left breast 4 1/2 years ago and I still have numbness. It has come back some, but not completely. It also feels tight at times, like it might be swollen, but by morning the tightness has receeded. Don't want to be a downer for you, but just wanted to share my experience.

physical therapy, the stretching and other exercises that I was given my the P.T. have helped me tremendously.  My latest problem is scar tissue which has become very painful.

It has helped with the tightness and building up strength again.  Also various aches and pains over the past year.

You need a referral from your DR.  You also need a good P. T.  I had one that didn't help me much at first , then tried another one what she has done for me is a little short of a miracle.

i have the numbness too that goes halfway down my arm and around back into shoulder blade and weakness in my arm no matter how much I try to strengthen it--and I only had 3 lymph nodes removed--I don't feel i was fully informed about how damaging the surgery would be--they need to show pictures with the area marked in black pen-just like they do prior to plastic surgery to show the areas that will be numb after surgery.  I want reconstruction of my arm more than my breast.

Are all of you talking about Numbness in your Back?

That is what I am really asking...If others have numbness in their back.  Since we did not have incisions or nodes from our back....that is surprising to me to be numb & this far out after surgery.  My Back is numb where my Bra band is- All the way across my back.

Numbness in front, Under the arm & even the arm.  While It isnt good or fun.  I think it is very common & varies from person to person.

fogandroses.  It could be a pinched nerve I suppose.  At least he came up with something other then it was a big surgery.  Good Luck with the Neck specialist.  I hope he can help you.

Thanks for the well wishes on my Surgery.

Pam

Wow I am happy you guys mentioned this.  I am about a year and a half out also.  I had 14 nodes removed and I have a numb and tingly shoulder blade on my back.  It is so annoying.  The surgeon also told me the same thing that it is because they dug around in there.  I am not so sure what it is!

Pam, that's exactly where my back is still numb - where the bra band goes around. But only on my left side where NO nodes were taken.  So it can't be typical from the surgery.

Scout - I told my PS I was going to draw on myself to show him where I'm numb and he said a woman came in who had marked all over her chest and arm with a magic marker.  His reaction was that everyone is different and it didn't do any good to show him where the numbess was because he couldn't change it. I get that but it still bothers me because my numbness isn't where I would have expected it. I don't believe it's normal!

My neighbor is a neurologist so I'm going to ask him about this again.  I asked him right after my surgery when my left back was burning and painful up to my shoulder blade (now "just" have this band of numbness after 15 months so that's progress at least).  At that time he said the nerves that give sensation to that part of my back come from my spine so the damage must be between my spine and the areas that were bothering me.

This is an outcome I was not expecting. It really nags at me - I want to know why! Hugs to you all.  Lisa

Interesting topic.   I have this spot on my  back, bra band area, same side as the port.   From the moment the port was installed, it itched and nothing would relieve it.  I asked onco and she only said it was not a rash or reaction...   Fast forward to more than a year later and the port has  been out for 3 months -- the spot is still itchy, does not really hurt but nagging itch.  of course it is in the impossible to reach area.   It is the opposite side of my lump and SNB.   Weird ... ?? !!!!

leftyAKAnancy - Several years ago, I developed a itchy area on my left back in the most unreachable spot. I asked my dermatologist when I was in for something else and he described it as a nerve that is "wiggling" for some reason. He gave me a cream that was supposed to help settle it down......but it was hard to get on the spot, and I have contacts. The cream seemed to stay on my fingers overnight even after washing several times - so I didn't bother for long. Since then, I have learned that when it starts acting up, I go to my chiropractor and the itch will go away!

Regarding the numbness after a mastectomy - my back numbness seems to have basically resolved although I still have underarm numbness, but I started going to my chiropractor about 2 - 3 weeks after surgery and it really seemed to help with the other nerve sensations of burning and discomfort. I did alot of massage also, and my husband helped too. Maybe myofascial release massage? Maybe a nerve is trapped in scar tissue? I'd pursue an answer, and think outside the box. Sometimes doctor's think they can't fix it so won't refer to someone who may be able to help with answers. It's OK to be assertive and manage your own care!

I am 10 months post/ I still have a lot of pain.  Shoulder, underarm and shoulder blade.  Have lost some mobility in arm and have started pt again.  I, also, have decided to try an ortho md.  My numbness is just on chest wall.  BS said I am healing well and I need to be patient.  But it is already time for next mammography in other breast.

I had a right mastectomy in May 2006. I also have a numb area that itches on my back in that same bra band area.  I also get shooting pains there occasionally.  It's been 3 years for me now with no noticable change.  I had a prophylactic left mastectomy in June 2007 and never developed a problem on that side.
