Dear Kate and Lauren: What experiences led you to pick breast cancer as the focus for your project? If it was a family member's experience, have you already asked that family member these questions? If so, what was her response? Did you ask her whether it seemed like a good idea to ask these questions of others? How did you find this Discussion Board? Did you notice the tab marked "Community Rules" on this Discussion Board? If so, did you read the "Community Rules"? If you read them, did it seem like your plans to post here might be something for which you were advised to ask for Moderators' permission? Did you ask for the Moderators' permission? Did you find it easy, difficult, or impossible to figure out how to contact the Moderators? [Not a flippant question, I seriously want to know! Because I think it might be nigh-on-impossible, and that may be part of the problem] Did you discuss with your faculty advisors how to learn about a potential clientele's needs for a product? If so, did your faculty advisors have any advice, guidelines, suggestions for you about conducting a survey? Did they advise you that there might be certain protocols to follow in soliciting information from people self-identified as having a particular medical diagnosis? Did they advise you there might be issues of privacy and etiquette involved in asking people about their lingerie? Have you contacted any health professionals who work with women who have breast cancer? How does it feel to be on the receiving end of a million questions? Have you previously designed clothing for anyone? Goods, products, services for anyone? Any medically-related goods, products, services? Have you been taught to perform breast self-exam regularly? ******* I feel for you, I really do. I actually really would like to know your answers to my questions, but you should probably send them by PM rather than continue posting here. In particular, I'm curious about faculty advice to students, since so many students come here asking questions in ways that seem quite ill-advised. London-Virginia and AnnNYC, you have somehow managed to turn this sow's ear of a topic into a silk purse. :) Maybe that would be a good idea for a PSD senior thesis. Diagnosis: 7/29/2009, IDC, Stage I Grade 2 left breast, DCIS Stage 0 right breast 0/2 nodes, ER+/PR+ double lumpectomy 9/1/09

Gosh, as I read through the original post, I thought it sounded sincere and interesting. As a designer myself I thought that perhaps an innovative product could come from this project. I couldn't finish reading through the questions. Perhaps it's the naivete of these young women who couldn't possibly know how painfully difficult it might be for anyone going through treatment and living with the after effects of chemo, surgery and radiation, to read, let alone actually answer all their questions. I will answer their last question, perhaps that will give them a clue. Q: Do you worry about recurrence? A: Every second of every day I worry about recurrence. I try to put it out of my mind, but you see, it's like a dark cloud forever on my horizon.... 1st DX 01/05/08, IDC, T2, N0, MX, Trip. Neg. Lumpectomy, AC X 4, 33 Rads.
