Chrisrenee77 - did you have any swelling or fluid retention after they came out? I'm looking at your surgeries - did the drains go in at the time of your BMX or at the time your tissue expanders were placed?
Admittedly, I've never done enough of my homework to know if the drains are associated with the actual mastectomy or the tissue expanders.
One thing is definitely for certain - the fills have resulted in more drain output. Hopefully (crossing fingers AND toes) this will start to go down.

LEEA- I had drains with my BMX and drains with my TE's ( i had delayed recon) so I've had drains twice. With my BMX they came out a week later. My TE's came out 4 weeks later I did not have any swelling with the TE's but about 2 wks later I started developing the Red Boob From Hell, it was feverish, swollen, hurt to touch. I have had this twice now. I have been on antibiotics every week since 10-15. My drain output went down around week 3.5 and it went from 30 ccs to 10 ccs just overnight. I'm hoping no drains with exchange surgery on Wednesday but preparing for the worst.
Hope your output goes down overnight and you can have them out this week .

went for my last preop appt with my PS today. Surgery is wednesday at 0730. Talked over what implants will be placed at time of surgery. On my last appt with him, I was nervous as hell. Didn't want to take pictures, and cried the whole time doing them. Today, his surgical assistant came in said to change into the robe so we can take pics. I happily obliged, practically running to meet her in the room. lol. After all the visits with my PS in the last 3 mos, I am practically ripping my gown open because of my numerous questions that I had. I am no longer modest about what I look like. I have never been more comfortable with a male doctor than I am with my PS. I can't wait for Wednesday morning, I am so excited.

Yep. I hear you on modesty, Chrisrenee. Whoosh - mine's out the window!

The other day there were two nurses, my husband and the breast surgeon (and myself) all talking in the examining room. I was sitting there on the table - the robe had come off to redo the tape - and I was naked from the waist up (other than those two omnipresent plastic grenades/drains and the Kotex™ pad looking holster). It didn't even faze me.
Editing to add - I'm happy to hear you're so comfortable with your doctor! I think that makes an enormous difference, regardless of what kind of doctor it is.

LeeA- yeah my PS is super nice and truly loves what he does. He rescheduled his whole morning on wednesday just so he could do my surgery, because the facility I have to go to wouldn't work with them for surgery tomorrow. It was his idea, so he could accomodate me due to my DH's work schedule. He's a paramedic on the oil rigs and is home 3wks and gone 3 wks at a time. The next time the facility was going to be able to do my surgery was 12/11 which would only give me 4 days home with him before he leaves again. I am really impressed by him and his work, he has yet to do anything that I don't like.

That's really great regarding the scheduling. Sometimes doctors aren't all that accomodating when it comes to changing their surgery days. And I know how it is working it around a spouse's schedule. I feel bad that this cancer thing has impacted my husband's work - meaning, taking time off, etc.

Pen, I have a bulge between the two incisions, too. I noticed it more today and think its a little larger than it was. I'm not as far out as you, I had surgery last Thursday. Mine feels like its filled with fluid so I'm hoping the drains will help it go down. Does yours seem to be getting any bigger? It could be a seroma?
My surgeon called today with the pathology results, and both my spots were pure DCIS - what a relief! One was bigger than expected, though - 8 cm. I'm thrilled that my saging didn't change, though - I was really worried about a micro invasion or additional areas of concern in the final pathology.

Peb I have that buldge under my armpit as well, my bs called it excess fat with fluid at the edge of my ex breast. She had to drain my incision, 2 x-large needles full of reddish fluid. Made my mast extremely painful! So I'm back to tight binding and see her again on Wednesday. I asked what to do about the excess skin/buldge as there seems to be a clot there as well. We discussed re-excision down the road, she felt sorry for me I guess and said she'd revisit that. I'm worried of course about lymphodemia but there is a hunk of skin and she agreed that it is breast tissue.
I was right about a mastectomy versus a lumpectomy! I was sure there was more cancer and sure enough she said they found more lesions....so mammo, ultra sound and MRI still didn't find it all! She said that I would have had to return for a mastectomy had I gone with her recommendation. The question is....would they have discovered the other cancer with just the lumpectomy as it was in another location. She said the margins were clear....I requested the other breast off but because I'm going to have chemo that it will be cleared with that...meanwhile I'm stuck with 1 3x d's hanging around :(.
They found a lesion on my liver with the cat scan...how do we say scared shitless quietly...

Sorry, Joanne for your news. I keep all the November girls in my prayers. It is really scary that the MRI left some cancer undiagnosed.
LeeA I can relate to you about the drains. I went 9 days without them, but had 4 more inserted since my last surgery. They are more painful now than the last time. Two are still making a lot of fluid.
My PS did not put the TEs back in, she said we would try again in 3 months. I am glad they caused me so much pain, I want everything settled before I attempt them again.
I got on this forum in late October and have read it almost daily. No two stories are the same. I can't hardly believe I have been in bed for almost month recovering from 3 surgeries. I am still looking for the corner to turn.

Good news! The latissumis dorsi fl seems to have been a success. The is no skin necrosis. The first good news I have had since my first surgery. It feels so good to be moving forward.
Chrisrenee, I can't wait to hear about your new foob. I day dream of the day I can stop thinking about surgery.
LeeA so sorry you still have your drains. I had 9 short days in the last month they were gone and it was heaven. PS said I will have to keep them for at least another week.
JoAnne, stay strong. I have found there are lots of twists and turns along the road.
Zappons, I live in Odessa, Fl. Since my TEs will not be put back in until march, could you post the information about the store that sells the camisoles an breast pads. Do they measure for those or do you just get whatever size you want.
Has the December forum been set up?
