What's the study about?
The Sister Study is the only long-term study of women aged 35-74 whose sister has had breast cancer. It is a national study to learn how environment and genes affect a womans risk of getting breast cancer. A total of 50,000 women needed by March 31, 2009 to find the causes of breast cancer.
What's involved?
If you join the Sister Study, you will get a Sister Study Kit through the mail. The Kit contains study information, questionnaires, and material to use when collecting urine, toenail, and household dust samples.
Participation includes having your blood drawn and sending in a sample of urine, toenail clippings, and house dust. You will be asked to complete questionnaires and participate in a two-part phone interview.
Who is conducting the study?
Dale P. Sandler, PhD, at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences / National Institutes of Health.
Who can participate?
Women who have never had breast cancer
Women whose sister (living or deceased), related by blood, had breast cancer
Women who are:
Latina, African American, Asian, Pacific Islander, or Native American woman between the ages of 3574 of any educational level or
Caucasian woman between the ages of 6574 of any educational level or
Caucasian woman between the ages of 3564 with less than a college degree.
Where?
Anywhere in the United States or Puerto Rico.
