Hadley, how did it go?  I got mine and half of each came back off with the skin.  The nurse and the doctor both said, "Moisen twice a day."  So I did, morning and night.  I have to work and sleep, so I thought twice a day would be great.  Then boom, the gauze kept sticking to my tattoo's.  Now the doctor says, the insurance won't pay for them again and will charge me $250 per nipple to redo them.  I want to do them over, but my Visa is up there with three car repairs and such.  I need to get it paid down and get my clothes dryer fixed first.  Do you think a tattoo artist would charge less, our skin is so thin, I am afraid for them to touch me.

I get my tatoos soon. Is it normal for the tatoos to come off?????  Now I am nervous about it. Always something to be nervous about, right? Did they say why they partially came off??

Agada - The doctor and the nurse at different times, told me to moisten them twice a day.  I did, morning and night.   Then it wasn't enough, they kept sticking to the gauze and after wetting the dry gauze I had a hard time prying it aways from the tattoos.  Now, they said, we told you to keep them moistened.  Anyway, they didn't budge when I told them that I did not get any further instruction.  Twice a day meant morning and night to me.  They have made a lot of money off of my insurance already.  I had to have the drains from my mastectomy removed and reran elsewhere, which caused me to lose healing time and an extra surgery.  I honestly think they should of gave me more of a break on redoing my tattoo's.

Hi Hope,

I am actually going to have him touch up my aerolas because he only did the skin he was going to twist into nipples. So, my aerolas are from the piece of stomach skin he cut off during my DIEP and they are this pale yellow color that looks like a bruise that never got done healing if you ask me. I told him I did not care for the color and he said That's the way I want them! I promptly replied YOU are NOT the one that has to live with them!! He didn't say anything after that. I really like him, he did a great job on my DIEP and my nipples look good- they are still swollen so they are a little on the obnoxious side!!!! But I tape nursing pads over them- I still have to wear the splints- and that seems to do the trick pretty well. My nipples are a pink shade now and I am happy with them. I wasn't sure I was going to be when he first did the tattoos, but a lady in the lobby overheard me while I was checking out, she said to wait until the nipples are done because they will look different, and she was right.

I hope you get some results you are happy with. I did not have any problems like that. Now I did have a reduction before I was diagnosed and was told to put bacitracin over my nipples and cover them with bandaids. Everytime I changed the bandaids it seemed like I peeled more and more of my right nipple off- It had been deatched twice I think at that point in other surgeries so I guess it just didn't have anything to reattach to??? If that makes sense. Don't give up until you get results you are happy with though and let us know what is going on.

The tattoos I had done by my ps office also peeled like Hope's did. I had them do it twice but wasn't happy with the blotchy results. I found a permanent makeup artist that specalizes in areolas that is in Asheville. She touched up the areolas and made them look good. Her instructions were different than what the ps office gave me. She had me keep the area moist with aquaphor ointment, covered loosely with a gauze bandage when dressed and when appropriate, let the air get to them. That time they didn't scab over and healed very well. Hopefully you will have better results with your tattoos.

Hadley and Ivytwoqlt...Sorry, it took awhile to get back to you guys.  I thought any updated post would be brought to our attention through our email and it wasn't.  I just came online and caught you are writing me.  I am glad you both finally got good results. I was afraid to use anyone other than my cosmetic surgery to tattoo me, due to our thin skin.  But I finally did have them redone a few days ago and this time.....as soon as the gauze started sticking, I went for outwear coverage only.  Then if I need to reapply the vaseline, just lift my top and reapply, no problem.  Funny Hadley, but I already found the bacitracin to use periodically on the aerola's, that takes care of any future infection, we did good.  They are really sore and I can't wait until I heal up.  The doctor said, no clorine until two weeks old, is that what they told you?

Well, rats....my breasts got infected from the last tattooing.  The doctor said that he has to give me a round of Cipro or I could loose everything build up within them.  So, more prayers needed!  I have to keep my mind only on the Lord and ME.....healing is essential, His words, my life!

Ivytwoqlt - I guess I'll have to try the aquaphor ointment, thanks for sharing.  I have already lost all my ink again, within one week.  I think that I will have to wait at least a year before I will have them  tattooed again.  They would be so pretty if they would just take.  I am going to keep this posting up, so that others will know to use the aquaphor ointment.  I wish I had read about this before....I must of read it too fast.  My loss!  Except I am somewhat aggravated, I think the physican should of told me not to have them redone for a YEAR!

Oh Ladies - hugs and good thoughts only...I'm not at that point yet with the tattooing but reading here and personally having a friend in a PS office gave me the advice, do not have them done in the office/hospital and if you do, make sure that you go darker, they fade over time.  She advised me to look into a tattoo artist that specifically worked with a hospital in doing tattooing like you have all mentioned.  Waiting at least a year too was a recommendation as well as every woman's skin is different, especially in the area we are talking about.  I already have a few tattoos on my body and have looked into someone within my state and back east where I'm from to possibly do this work when I'm ready. Laughing

I actually get my aerolas tattooed on the 19th of this month. I thought he was going to do it when I posted this but it turns out he only did the skin he used to make my nipples. He said he likes to tattoo on a guide for him as to where to cut etc. I don't know but he is the one that went to college for 16 years!

Hope I am very sorry you are having so many difficulties with this. I hope things are going better for you :)
